Behavior and Communication

You’ve seen them on the news and read about them in the news paper, know that they help people in communities around the country and around the world every day. The American Red Cross is there whenever, wherever, they are needed. The American Red Cross’s Culture has been created by the paid and volunteers within the organization. The website for the American Red Cross (2011) includes their mission statement: “The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, which is led my volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.” The value of the American Red Cross is the foundation for the way they interact and hold themselves. The values of the American Red Cross are Accountability, Collaboration, Commitment to Results, Trustworthiness and Humanitarianism (American Red Cross, 2011). These Values create the culture of this organization.

Communication within the American Red Cross is very important. The organization is committed to results within the organization. The American Red Cross uses the PIER System for communication. The PIER System is a leading provider of web-based communication management technology (Schafer, 2009). The American Red Cross use the PIER system for internal and external communications with employees, the public, investors, the media and more (Schafer, 2009). Schaefer (2009) references a quote from the vice president for American Red Cross, “For us, PIER is all about speed and efficiency.” Said Pat McCrummen, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the American Red Cross. “From helping with daily communications both within the organization and with our many media engagements, and helping our limited staff and volunteers effectively manage communications during major crisis events, PIER’s comprehensive tools simply enable us to get more done with less, and faster than ever.” (American Red Cross to use PIER Systems for Crisis Communications, Content Management and Public Relations, para. 2). I ultimately believe that communication is determined by the American Red Crosses Culture. With this particular organization the need to effectively communicate is part of the American Red Crosses goals of being committed to results. American Red Cross (2011) states they innovate to improve efficiency and effectiveness. Which we can see they are carrying out with the communication system the American Red Cross currently has in place. Knowing this the organizations espoused values also align with the enacted values when volunteers work along side with the values that the American Red Cross has in place.

Walt Disney’s Mission Statement is simple, be the best in the business ("Talking Point the Disney Institute Blog", n.d.). Management leads by example and practices the same techniques taught to employees. They encourage and reward employees for innovative and strategic thinking. Walt Disney’s organizational culture is a strong and positive culture. They hire people that are known as pleasers because they are more apt to offer superior customer service. They keep methods simple and allow for individuality of employees and push expression of personalities ("Talking Point the Disney Institute Blog", n.d.). There are two types of communication, external and internal. Walt Disney uses both types. They use phone calls and emails mainly, but will use in house publications, memos, or the web to communicate with employees. For external communications, they also use email and phones, but add advertising and publications to that list to communicate with customers. Walt Disney believes that communication is one of the keys to success and encourages employees to communicate thoughts and ideas to supervisors. I found a lot of interesting information that I did not about this organization. The American Red Cross help people in need all over the world.
