I can read and write, but I am far from a literate person. Growing up I was on an I.E.P (Individualized Educational Program) up until high school, which means I had and still have a hard time when it comes to learning new material. I was always a step behind when it came to educational milestones and struggled to keep up with kids my age. Although I wasn't a poster child for learning, I do credit myself for my creativity when I was younger. I always had these crazy thoughts and ideas running through my brain. All these thoughts eventually turned into stories that I would add to daily. Even though I had all these creative stories, I never wrote any of them down due to my lack of knowledge. A literate person understands a deeper meaning in everything rather just taking everything word for word. Being literate is being fluent and advanced in many fields, so basically knowing a lot about different things. If I was a literate person and had a deeper meaning when it came reading and writing, then maybe I could interpret the knowledge that I have gained and turned it into the knowledge that I could share.
Being behind on the learning curve when I was younger has affected my adult life. I can read almost anything handed to me, but I can't understand what I just read. I can write without a single thought in my head and still somehow get my point across on paper. This logic may not make sense to most, but it is the only thing that describes who I am.
The role that reading and writing play in my life is not a big role at all. The most reading I do is when I'm reading a dinner menu. Everything I do and everything I am, I learned from being visual. Being visual is the only thing that has gotten me this far. Yes, there is a lot of reading and writing in college, but watching and listening are the only ways I can get through my classes. How I understand most things in class are from when teachers go in-depth on topics themselves so it is easier for me just to
