Especially, if you are notmarried and on food stamps. America does not support mothers enough like other countries.
Also, Mother gets at least six weeks in America to be with their children right after their birth. Other countries allow more time mother other countries allowto bond with their babies and maternity day and full insurance, around that familys. It is a structural problem and not a personal failing. English in America

...America is one of a kind, unique in that it has been successful where other countries have failed in bringing together people of different races. It owes part of this success to being inescapably English in language, ideas, and institutions. History has shown us that the United States has been accepting of people from all over the world. It has peacefully produced a multiethnic society by creating a new American culture that unites us all. Therefore, it should be mandatory for new immigrants to learn English because it’s the common ground and unifier of our diverse community. Non English speakers in America are also burdened with many challenges, limitations and negativity. While ethnic and racial issues arise in nations all over the world, the U.S. succeeded at peacefully bringing together people of different races, religions, and backgrounds into one culture because we are unified by the English language. America has become a melting pot because we’ve forged a new culture that unifies people from all different backgrounds. According to Arthur Schlesinger, in his article “The Cult of Ethnicity” the point of America wasn’t to preserve old cultures but to forge a new, American culture, and there lies the secret to how America prospered. As Hector St. John de Crevecoeur admired the diversity of the settlers in America in the 18th century when, he realized that “here individuals of all nations are melted into a new race of men” (Schlesinger 1). America has avoided ethnic tension...

...MULTICULTURALISM Exiled in America Vanessa Armendariz SOC/315 09-27-2012 Tadizia Dennis-Jackson Exiled in America A woman who was hurt and was taken her largest possession in just seconds was a heartbroken experience, not only that but a life changing one for Sergia Santibañez. She was separated from her five children and sent to her homeland Mexico. The video clip I chose to express myself with is “Exiled in America” by Angela Torres Camarena. This video clip is about a mother who lived in America for 25 years and soon was deported to Mexico, leaving 5 kids of hers in America. “Exiled in America” explores immigration United States, focusing on detention and deportation from the point of view of those who are affected most, their children. The problem here to me is that these good families are being torn apart, families that come with a purpose to find a dream and to pursue it. Not everyone is the same, not everyone kills, and not everyone does illegal acts by using the government help. Me as a perfect example I can tell you that my mother as an illegal single mother, living here for over 25 years. She never asked for food stamps or welfare. And where am I today, working with a successful company and being able to have the opportunity to sit here in class and graduate. I am not being a bad reputation of a Hispanic I am proud one. The problem here is that in 2007 they presented The Child Citizen Protection Act. This particular act is for those whom are being deported and have...

Meritocracy

...The Lies of Meritocracy in America America is seen as the land of opportunity where an individual can go as far as their own merit takes them. The opportunities to be successful are endless and one just has to work hard to achieve them. This is based on the idea of meritocracy where individuals are only measured on the basis of their intellectual contributions, “divorced” identity, social status, gender, race, religion, and other characteristics. But this is only an illusion a so called myth that individuals are brought up to believe. In “Horatio Alger”, Harlon Daltons is able to break down this myth of meritocracy that include how we are judged solely on merits, have a fair opportunity to establish those merits, and how merit will bring success. Ruth Conniff in “Women Losing Ground” is able to support the myth of meritocracy that Dalton has established by explaining how women are still suffering from this myth that America has created. Dalton and Conniff are able to debunk the myth of meritocracy and help those that believe in meritocracy understand the inequality the myth has created in American culture. The idea of meritocracy is stating that an individual will not get judged and that “each of us is judged solely on her or his own merits” (Dalton (Alger theory)). But “sometimes we are judged on a different scale”... “favored...and ignored all on the basis of our race” (Dalton). How does this compare to only being judged on his or her own merits because all that is viewed...

Arguentative Letter on Poverty

...Malaia Simms 2/14/14 Pd. 9 Mrs. Hatlen Dear The Federal Government of Untied States of America, My Name is Betty Johnson and I am 30 years old. I am writing to you because I am very concerned with the future of the citizens in this country. Throughout my life poverty has been Americas "Darkest Secret". I never Really hear news Reports on the growing percentage of Americans living in poverty, or the ways the government is trying to fix this issue. I grew up in Detroit, Michigan where more than a third of residents live below the poverty line (Sasha Abramsky, "America's Shameful Poverty Stats"). Throughout my childhood I have watched many friends' families struggle financially. Sometimes my friends would go without eating for a couple of days simply because they could not afford it. I would offer them food but they would kindly decline because they were so embarrassed because of their situation. They would wear clothes that wouldn't fit them because they couldn't afford to buy new clothes. They would miss school to watch their little siblings because their mom was a single parent and had to work all day everyday just so she could feed them. They didn't even apply to college because they knew they had to immediately pick up a crapy job so they could help their mom pay the bills. The list goes on. All of this is happening under your supervision and it doesn't seem like much is affectively fixing this issue. America's lowest percentage of citizens...

...immigrated to America with great success, and therefore has big expectation of her daughter. Tan herself is also the daughter of a couple who emigrated from China which explains why she writes about this topic. The narrator is first-person which gives the impression that Tan is telling her story. The story is set in Chinatown, America during the late 1950’s. Amy Tan doesn’t tell us a lot about the setting other than the narrator lives with her mother and father in an apartment. They don’t have a lot of money. The mother works as a cleaning lady, and earns her money from cleaning people’s houses. It also shows how little money the family has that the mother has to clean a blind retired piano teacher’s apartment in order for her daughter to get piano lessons. Even though they don’t have a lot of money they seem to be quite happy with their situation. This may be because the mom came from China where she lost everything because of the war, so the little they have is still a lot more then what she would have in China. Most of the story takes place on the floor of the apartment they live in, either in their own or else in the apartment of the protagonist’s piano teacher Mr Chung. The narrator is a girl. She has short hair, because her mom thought it would help her get to be a famous child actress. She’s properly in her teenage years, because she is rebelling against her mother, which is a very normal thing to do when you’re in the teenage years. Her relationship with her mother gets bad...

Since the FMLA is a federal law, some states in America have chosen to change this act. California, New Jersey and Rhode Island these states offer paid maternity leave (“The Family and Medical Leave Act - Wage and Hour Division (WHD)…"). Out of fifty states in America only three give mothers paid maternity leave. However, in these states there are problems with the legislations; for example, in California, the act provides paid leave for four week antenatal (before birth) and six to eight weeks postnatal (after birth). However, 52% of women continued to work until the birth of their baby, thirty-two percent took antenatal leave and return to work. Summary Of Immigrant Communities At Home By Ichiro

...Ichiro’s imagined dialogue with his mother speaks the frustrations of a second generation immigrant conflicted with his duty to family and the expectations of young American men. Ichiro questions his decision to side with his parental nation rather than the one in which he grew up. In a broader context, the story speaks of a generational clash seen uniquely in immigrant youth. Okada’s modernist approach to the issue highlights the conflict in immigrant communities at home. Ichiro lacks the self-confidence and maturity to answer the two questions with how he actually feels. Ichiro expresses his wish to serve in the United States military but suppresses these wants to satisfy his mother. This prevent him from developing his own identity separate...

Common Sense

...the colonists because this argument made them reevaluate their view of the British Empire as a protective mother country. It also attacked mutual feelings which were felt amongst colonial Americans; placed those feelings into words and documented them. Colonists whom remained loyal to British reign believed that Britain was a mother country and that Britain had America’s best interest heart. These accusations of over-empowerment enlightened the American people to make independence reality. According to Paine, some beliefs that America had ‘flourished’ under the control of Britain arose. Paine used the metaphor” a child has thrived upon milk, that it is never to have meat”, meaning that the country although began by Britain (colonists were of English decent), had all characteristics and strength to be able to flourish without any European assistance. On the argument of protection, Paine encouraged that Britain weren’t protecting America from any of its own enemies or problems, but furthermore protecting itself from its own enemies and problems (ex. French and Indian War). “But Britain is the parent country, say some. Then the more shame upon her conduct. Even brutes do not devour their young, nor savages make war upon their families.” (Paine, Thoughts on the Present State on American Affairs). This quote depicts the non-unity that Great Britain shown toward America, and...
