...Colonialism COM/172 University of Phoenix November 12, 2013 Kesha Eason Throughout the recent history of the last one hundred years Colonialism has proved to be in part a good thing for the world. It has shown to be at times violent with nations fighting war after war. But it also has brought numerous different cultures together. It has also helped to stop the genocide against people of different faiths and walks of life around the world. No matter how controversial Colonialism is in History it has proved to be a positive thing as a whole and it has helped to develop and modernize the world. 1. Negatives of Colonialism The roots of slavery quite often are varied and extensive, but often go hand in hand with Colonialism. What happens when a country invades and controls another nation or area, the controlled nation or area is forced to give up food, goods, and people usually by force. This has happened throughout history and it is very well written down and documented. Slavery has been used as a tool of colonialism all over the world. It is not uncommon that the people of the newly acquired territory will be forced into slavery to pay the debts of the war and to pay for the goods coming in to the country, clear out the land for the people that will surely come in, and it is a form of subjugation as a way to show the people that the new ruler reigns supreme now. It is well documented that the longest running slave trade is the Arab Slave Trade. The Arab Slave Trade...

...All About Me Everyone defines themselves in different ways. Everyone also finds different things important to them. If I were to choose three main things that are the most important in my life at this moment; I would choose, family, friends, and education. These three things have helped build who I am as a person today. Family has always been important to me. Without my family I would be out on the streets like a lost dog. Both of my parents have done their best to raise me and get me to where I am today. My older brother, Hector, has always been there for me. He is the reason I am not afraid to speak my mind. My younger siblings, Denise, Nemo, and Viviana, have all taught me to be more patient than I was. Patience is something I lacked greatly until they came around and it is something that is majorly needed in life. Speaking my mind has been both positive and negative for me. I tend to say what is on my mind at all times and...

...parenting duties such as waking in the middle of the night to add blankets to a cold baby, later sparked a backlash of criticism of Skinners work and false rumors about Deborah committing suicide. According to “B.F. Skinner Foundation” (2013) In 1938, Skinner wrote The Behavior of Organisms which “summarizes nearly ten years of research, spanning the years of Skinner's graduate school days at Harvard through his three years as a member of the Society of Fellows.” In 1945, Skinner became the Psychology Department Chair at the University of Indiana. Three years later he joined the psychology department at Harvard University where he remained for the duration of his life. It was at Harvard where Skinner’s inventions helped to shape his career in psychology and helped him to become one of the leaders in behaviorism. Behaviorism according to Dictionary.com (2013) is “the theory or doctrine that human or animal psychology can be accurately studied only through the examination and analysis of objectively observable and quantifiable behavioral events, in contrast with subjective mental states, in contrast with...

...Application of Psychology to Modern Life Name Name of the Institution Application of Psychology to Modern Life Self-reflection entails evaluating oneself to analyze the past experiences in their lifetime that might have either a negative or positive influence. Self-reflection helps to come up with techniques of coping with similar situations later in life. Self-reflection also involves picking a personal experience, and evaluating the challenges as per the situation and naming ways in which one was able to overcome the challenges or perhaps failed to address them. This essay involves a self-reflection in one of my most stressful lifetime situation and how I managed to cope up with it. The Stressful Situation Back in high school, my dream was to excel academically so that I could pursue a Business Management degree by getting a scholarship to study at Oxford University. Bearing that in mind, I had to work hard to attain a grade that will enable me to get the scholarship. The reason as to why I always wanted to get the sponsorship is because I was pretty sure that my parents would not afford to pay school fees in any university. I worked extremely hard in my studies, spending sleepless nights, forming discussion groups and sacrificing my social life so that I could have more time to concentrate on my studies. After leaving high school, I was pretty sure that I had done my best to achieve the grade that I always wanted. After the results...

...be some challenges ahead, but what if you don’t take the risk; you aren’t ready for any future challenges ahead. Completing a degree in a higher education will help you academically and professionally. Academically, you will find yourself becoming more educated than ever. Professionally, you can see yourself having more financial offers as for employers willing to hire you. If you have enough knowledge, you would know when going on a job interview you should have a resume` present. The three reflections that I really enjoyed throughout the nine weeks of this course are: critical thinking, goal setting, and personal learning style. I have learned a lot of material that I didn’t really absorb in high school. Personal learning style helped me notice the informal writing and casual writing can both distraction and non-distraction my academic learning experience. Using the V.A.R.K. (visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic) method, game me a breakdown of using personal learning...

...split down the middle. Loss of land was a struggling incident and it left them with a loss of resources to sell. Also, thousands of Africans tried to fight the British army and riot against them to save their land. The Africans were not as strong as the Europeans though, so they lost thousands on their men in battle. Finally, African’s were getting diseases that the Europeans were immune to, like malaria, and killing the people of Africa. Overall, I think that the positive effects outway the negatives effects from Imperialism. My first reason is that the economy expands and more goods and services are available to the Europeans. People are only buying products from the British because they are the only ones that have access to those profitable, exclusive items. Secondly, the lifespans of the people increased when they started practicing sanitation in hospitals and even at home. The Europeans may have taken over their land and split rivals into one group but they taught the Africans their ways of living and helped them for many generations...

...the biggest fan of English classes, however I am glad that I ended up taking the class. Throughout the semester I learned how too successfully write documents that are used in the world of business, these documents include; sales report, a memo, an executive summary, a resume, a proposal, and many more. I had three assignments that were assigned. The three assignments included; a resume, a rhetorical analysis of a popular business article, and a positive and negative business letter. The first assignment that was assigned was to find an available job position and create a resume that would fit to the opening. I felt like I met the goals for the assignment because I followed the rubric and created a resume based on a summer internship position offered by Uline. This assignment taught me how to create a strong resume with the correct format that employers are looking for. At first the assignment was difficult because I wasn’t sure what type of resume to write, but after a little help it slowly started to come together. Peer review helped me with my resume because it...

...Communication Style By: Shequita Kelly COM/200 Rose Farmer 6/1/2015 Introduction Communication is a two-way process of reaching mutual understanding, in which participants not only exchange information, news, ideas, and feelings but also create and share meaning. In general, communication is a means of connecting people or places. Nevertheless, taking this self- assessment has helped me learn a lot about myself, it has helped me to identify my strengths and weaknesses, and has also helped me in learning how others perceive me. Now, I know what areas I need to work on, and in order to progress I have to make some changes in regards to my communication style, and how I relate to others. In addition, after taking the self-assessment and reviewing how others perceived me, I was very shocked. At first, I was angry and upset because these are people that are very close to me, and to be honest it hurt my feelings. However, I was able to see the big picture of it all, and I knew that they were just being honest with me. While most people perceive me as confident, professional, positive, and reliable. Other’s perceived me as, closed, unfriendly, and dis-interested. The interesting part of it all, is when I got my results from ‘’what’s my face to face communication assessment, my results and the results from the peer perception survey were identical. Therefore, I knew there was some truth to how they perceived me. I always thought I was friendly, open, and interested. On...

...I realized that I had been letting the way I looked on the outside affect how I felt on the inside. But the more I focused on my interests, the more it brought out things I liked about myself” (206). Raina had spent all of her time focused on all the things that she hated about herself, instead of the things that she loved. Consequently, she was more of a negative person during this period of her life, but as she progressed as a young adult, Raina recognized that focusing on her passions made her a happier person, and helped her accept herself. This was by far the most important lesson that I took out of this novel. I have a hard time with accepting myself and flaws, much like most people do. I spent too much time feeling sorry for myself, brushing off my accomplishments and passions and instead focusing on all of the things that I could not do or thought I did not do well enough. As a result, I was an extremely negative person. Reading about someone experiencing the same challenges and having a positive outcome arise out of their change of actions, encouraged me to do the same. Because of that push, I am now a more positive and passion-oriented...
