...similar at all. The grandmother looks back fondly on days when people acted nicer and looking for a good man was much easier. In “Good Country People”, Hulga is rude, has a degree in philosophy, and likes the idea of… well, nothing. There isn’t that much similarity based on the descriptions given, but there is a similarity that wasn’t stated: the fact that both characters are more shallow than they think they are. Even with all her university training, Hulga isn’t a full believer in nothing. She just knows what to say to give this assumption. This is shown when she was shocked in Manley’s change of behavior, from a simpleton and bible salesman, Manley turns into someone who declares the truth behind what he sells. “I hope you don’t think I believe that crap! I may sell Bibles but I know which end is up and I wasn’t born yesterday and I know where I’m going!” (O’Connor 201). The grandmother also liked to think of herself as a good person, but she only really became a good person after her meeting with “The Misfit”. Through the entire encounter with The Misfit, she begs and pleads not for the life of her family but to spare her life. Towards the end of her...

Rotc

...Forces has done, so far, to achieve peace and development in the country. I would not throw you any unnecessary info nor will I be presenting to you thorough analysis of data based on comprehensive research. But, instead, I’m simply gonna tell you how ROTC has changed my views and how these views, in my own personal opinion, can help in our search for an ultimate peace and a satisfactory socioeconomic development status. The question at hand is “How can ROTC help in the peace and development efforts,” but, should we not be asking WHAT? What we, the youth, whether we be cadets or just ordinary students, can do to contribute to this national undertaking. From my learning's as a cadet... let me suggest three Steps: First BE AWARE. Second BELIEVE. And Third ACT. From here we can derive our roles as the future leaders of this nation. It might be a cliche, but let me say again that WE ARE THE HOPE OF THE MOTHERLAND. In our hands lies the future of our country. It is for this reason that institutions of higher learning were established (for us) in the belief that knowledge can save us all. But mere knowledge is never enough for a person to achieve his goals because his CHARACTER – the way he interacts with his surroundings, his perspective, his beliefs and stand on individual matters, the way he performs his tasks and even his physical capabilities and proficiency – carries a lot greater gravity on to where his life will lead. (This being)The very rationale of Citizen-Army Building...

Discussion Questions

...not an expert? Why or why not? Yes, an expert’s opinion should carry more weight as opposed to someone who is not an expert. Someone may have the same amount of experience as an expert does, yet they may not have the credentials to prove that they have been through some sort of training and have obtained their experience through another professional who taught them. For instance, a theology major is more likely to be listened to than someone with the experience but without the degree. So in terms of trustworthiness, the expert’s opinion should carry more weight. DQ #2 A good thesis statement helps guide the rest of your paper. Do you think this is true? Is it true of a poor thesis statement as well? Why?      Generally speaking, I believe it is true for a strong thesis statement to guide the rest of one’s paper. A well written thesis statement gives the audiences the points one wants to make in his/her essay, essentially a good thesis statement, summarizes the entire paper. On the other hand, a poor written thesis will not provide a strong argument to the subject matter. A poorly written thesis fails to take a stand and not be specific towards the topic. Just making an observation or an overly broad claim will not work. The goal of the writer is the keep the audience entertained and wanting to know more, thus, a poor thesis will not provide...

Case 2.1

...A. Case 2.1: To recruit the CEO from the inside seems to work well for Intel. Do you believe this is a sound policy? Why? I have to say I do agree with Intel’s philosophy to grow and groom its own CEOs and leaders. This way there is continuity with projects that are being developed. This philosophy also permits for the person being groomed to have a better understanding of many levels and job tasks within the organization. By allowing the future CEO to observe and perform tasks with the current CEO will facilitate a smooth transition when the time comes for the change. On the other hand, by recruiting an external candidate for the CEO position, an accommodation period is inevitable. As much as you try to find the right candidate with the desirable traits for the position of a CEO, this candidate has not lived the culture and you run the risk of this candidate never fitting in. How can a non-technically oriented leader like Paul Otellini succeed as CEO in a technical company such as Intel? Although Mr. Otellini did not have the technical background that most of his predecessors had, he obviously possessed the business acumen, not easily taught, required to succeed as a CEO of this company. Besides, because of Intel’s philosophy of grooming its own candidates, Mr. Otellini had the chance to acquire the necessary technical knowledge for such position. Why do some firms fail to plan effectively for executive succession? Evidently not every company has the same culture...

S., Texas Tech University August 10, 2014 After We Believe Book Review Introduction N. T. Wright is the former Bishop of Durham in the Church of England (2003-2010) and one of the world's leading Bible scholars. He is now serving as the chair of New Testament and Early Christianity at the School of Divinity at the University of St. Andrews. Wright is the award-winning author of Surprised by Hope, Simply Christian, The Last Word, The Challenge of Jesus, The Meaning of Jesus (coauthored with Marcus Borg), as well as the much heralded series Christian Origins and the Question of God. Thesis, Purpose & Description The major underlying thesis of Wright’s book is that the pursuit of a moral ideal, or what he calls virtues, is not contradictory to a grace-driven Christian life, but demanded by it. Wright considers how people who believe that Jesus is God’s offer of redemption should respond to this belief.  He writes primarily to Western Christians, steeped in the mistaken idea that Christianity is about getting into heaven after dying.  He suggests...

Books or Experience

...Topic: It has been said, “Not everything that is learned is contained in books.” Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why? ESSAY There has been a hot debate as to which method of gaining knowledge is more important: through books or through experience. Although most people will say that acquiring knowledge from experience proves to be more effective, I myself believe learning from books plays a more important role. To begin with, there is no deny that the information in books has been scientifically proved, and thus correct and widely accepted by the public at a particular time. In order to be written in the books, the knowledge is usually the result of exhaustive research and experiment of previous generations; therefore, learning from books will reduce the time that students use to do the experiments by themselves. This knowledge is particularly important for those who want to be successful in schools, colleges and even jobs. As the matter of fact, from primary school to University, books are completely indispensable for students as they provide the fundamental knowledge required to develop people’s ability. As for jobs, books remain the best choice when it comes to giving information needed in order to perform well in a particular profession. Secondly, from academic reading, people will improve their knowledge in various aspects much faster than from experience...

The first thing that I did was to answer the phone calls. I had encountered different problems of the clients with regards on their account through phone calls and face to face interaction and because I had no idea on their queries, I ended up asking the persons who are capable to answer their problems. It gave me the idea to communicate very well to my co-workers by providing them the information of the clients before accepting the calls and meeting with the clients. In that way, I had developed my good communication skills towards my bosses, co-workers and clients. I had learned to encode a payroll account by encoding the names and new account numbers of their clients. But, we were restricted in encoding due to the privacy of the client’s account. In that case, we had never used the pc again. I had learned to prepare application form for the new client’s. This had helped me to be fast and efficient in preparing the right documents to be given to the client’s. I started to organize many documents. I started to arrange the new clients ATM card form, payroll account, existing and endorsed in alphabetical order. At first it wasn’t easy. Success

...relate it with money, some with power. However, for me “success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do your best, to become the best of that you are capable of becoming.” It consists in being content with what you do!!          Success is something one assembles from components he discovers in his soul and his imagination. It can be achieved by knowing, understanding, believing in oneself, and executing the apposite actions required to achieve it. “The truth is that all of us attain the greatest success and blithe possible in this life whenever we use our native capacities to their greatest extent.”          “Do not aim for success if you want it! Just do what you love and believe in, and…it will come naturally.”          Sorrowfully, success has been commercialized with fame and popularity. “The common idea that success spoils people by making them vain, egotistic, and self-complacent is erroneous; on the contrary it makes them-for the most part- humble, tolerant, and kind.”          Setbacks also help in achieving success. It is very aptly said that discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success. Multi-faceted success doesn’t lie in not falling, but lies in rising each time you fall.          It is imperative that we take our failures in our stride, which will actuate us to accomplish our tasks. Having done so, we can set an inspiring example and leave an indelible imprint on the...

Organization Behavior Barry's Case

...Allison IKONGA Organization Behavior Place yourself in Barry's shoes and answer the following: What would I have done as Barry in this situation? Include everything that you believe impacts the situation. After watching the role play did you change your thoughts about how you would approach the situation? Is there any other information you would like to have had - and if so - explain the significance of the information. I would have reacted as Barry in the same situation. I mean, I would have spoken with him or attempted to suggest him implicitly to do not reenact that on the workplace. In case of incomprehension, I would have caught him in my office in order to discuss with him, what kind of problems could create this distraction. I would have been calm and tried to give some examples of bad effects that it could have on the others employees. In this way, he could realize in what it could be disturbing. The most difficult seemed to be, how and which words adopted in this case and this person. Because how it had been specified in the text, Barry had got this job four months ago. So, he couldn’t be aware of each personality of the staff. Maybe, Barry was too direct when he tried to run him off the job. Because the others were witnesses of this situation and this produced an unpleasant effect on Andy (like humiliation). Resentful, he would have been aggressive during the meeting. After watching the role play, I realized the different situations that we could meet...

Big Nurse Win

...The cookuo’s nest is a war between Mc and the big nurse, a war should have a winner and a loser, which is the topic we had talked about during the class last week. Although some of my classmates thought Mc won at last, I still had a point of view that the Big Nurse should be the winner. First of all, when the Big Nurse asks them to take medications, the patients will take them even they don’t want it. While Mc first take his medicine, he just find that patient try to avoid of taking those. And the second point, the Big Nurse try her hardest to create the fear among the patients, and in many ways decrease the influence of Mc. When Mc try to make all the patients vote for the baseball game, Big Nurse still use her power to let Mc fail but Mc can not find any excuse to refute her decision, the failure of the “uprising for the baseball game” let the patients thought that the Big Nurse had more power than Mc did. Some of the patients, just like Cheswake, influenced by Mc and talk against to Big Nurse because she keep his cigarette and make him crazy. What the big nurse do was just send him to the disturbed. After back from the disturbed, Cheswake suicide when he was having a shower. Another example, chief, the one who support Mc most, fight with the black boys for Mc, also be sent to the disturbed because of this. So it is not hard to found that the Big Nurse want every patient to know what they will have if they don’t follow the rule that the Big Nurse made and try to against her...

The Walking Bug

...Dream it, believe it, achieve it Welcome to the world of creativity, my world that I ponder upon, my world where I always believe to achieve. When we dream we believe and we will always achieve. The key to achieving is always to have confidence in yourself, so for me I build a safety zone that helps me but down walls that hold me back from being confident, bold and having hope that by believing I can achieve any task ahead of me. I never look at the tick of the clock or the way others see great achievements, because I have hope that can build communities into believing in themselves, a hope that can build a nation into believing in themselves and a dream that can change all believers in achievers. Like great leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr who quotes in his famous speech “I have a dream”, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their boldly and believing that what he will speak into a nation will be achieved, was achieved. There was a shift that changed people into believing that can be free and because of that, what he spoke was what was achieved. He didn’t just ponder and sleep on his dream like “oh yeah I have a dream but I’m going to go back to sleep and keep on dreaming because it’s just a dream” but he believed in himself and got up in front of people and followed that dream, and because he had hope that it could happened, ait was achieved. He made...

Turtles of the Saharah

...large percentage of these people never go out and buy a ticket. These people have exactly a zero chance of winning, while the ones who went out and bought a ticket have a chance, albeit slim, at becoming lucky. This is the scenario that came to mind when I first read the quote “Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity”. However, the more I thought about the quote, the more I realized how easily this could be applied to many real life situations. The author of this quote is trying to tell the readers that preparing yourself for opportunity is the key to being lucky, or successful. In order to prepare yourself for success, there are certain steps that must take place. First, you have to believe in yourself. You must believe that you can pick the lucky numbers, or you must believe that you are capable of competing in, let’s say a marathon. Second, you have to set goals for yourself. In the case of the lottery it’s pretty easy; Goal #1, buy ticket. Goal #2, wait. In the marathon scenario, much like most other scenarios, it’s a little more complicated. You must train both physically and mentally, and make many sacrifices along the way. Finally, you must be optimistic about the result you achieve. In the case of the lottery player, they probably didn’t win. But at least they can try again in a few days, right? The marathon runner may not have won the race. He might have even come in last place. Regardless of the outcome, he can still say he was able to compete in, and finish...
