Bella Make Life

...family makes all of the decisions and supports the family financially. The woman is supposed to answer to the man and insure that all of his needs come second to none. Those typical male and female gender roles are the cruxes of the Jamaican family hierarchy; however, in “Bella Makes Life” by Lorra Goodison, Goodison turns these roles upside down. In her short story she explores the masculinity insecurities the protagonist Joseph, faces as the stereotypical Jamaican gender roles shift in his relationship with his counterpart Bella. As the mother of Joseph’s children, Bella, went over to New York for a period of a year, Joseph had to encompass the role of a father and a mother in his children’s life. This causes Joseph sense as a man to be fogged as he dealt with the issues internally. Instead of it being Bella’s responsible, Joseph was now in charge of making sure that his children were sent to school neat and clean. It even went to as far that he learned how to plait his daughter hair in order to insure that she looked presentable. His friends began to laugh at him because it seemed like he had gave up on relations with women all together. The fact that even his friends saw a change in him added to the resentment he had for Bella leaving to explore New York and him having to assume her role. As he began to become sort of a “surrogate mother” his power as the man in his relationship with Bella changed when she returned back to Jamaican. The new forward and bold Bella that emerged...

Themes In Elie Wiesel's 'Night'

...tells the story of Bella Swan, an average high school girl who falls in love with a vampire, Edward Cullen. The story Twilight has many themes, however the most prominent are love, choice, and sacrifice. Twilight is a story of forbidden love. As quoted in the book “And so the lion fell in love with the lamb” as we have famously read. That is because Bella is a human and Edward a vampire. Bella is Edward’s prey. They both know being together is dangerous, but their feelings are so intense they feel they have no choice but to be together. Although Edward can’t give Bella a normal human life, he can make her happy despite all the challenges that they face. Bella said about Edward: “About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him-and I didn’t know how potent that part might be-that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.” Bella's thoughts show how strongly she feels about Edward....

True Love In Elie Wiesel's 'Twilight'

...book is because Bella is a weak, single minded character. I did not get this from reading the books. I just thought she was a normal girl trapped in this supernatural world. I mean, as the books go along, she gets so much stronger. She's never afraid to speak her mind, she has put herself in near death situations, just to save the people she loved. And she forced herself into this Vampire world, while most people would have ran and hid from it. I think people get too bogged down in the "her whole world is centered around a boy" aspect. The point of that was trying to explain the whole true love side of...

The Role Of Feminism In Stephanie Meyer's Twilight

...” Many women are considered/want to be a feminist, because it something that advocates for gender equality. Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight saga series has driven support that it’s a feminist piece. To some extent I agree that it’s a feminist piece. For example, Meyer’s focuses on the old fashioned traditional aspect of books like falling in love, marriage, having kids, and live happily ever after. Those are all decisions that Bella chooses as well therefore making her some type of feminist. However, Bella Swan doesn’t embrace the feminine qualities or the feminist ideology. Although it can be initially perceived that Bella Swan is a feminist that keeps her own agency in her daily life, she doesn’t in her romantic relationships because she allows for the men in her life to dictate her actions....

...Legal consciousness is the basis for the legal system; within the framework of legal consciousness are Before the Law, With the Law and Against the Law these concepts are represented within the story of these three women. The three women involved in this story all have the same problem with the principal of the school they work at, they are all being harassed mostly in the same way. The three women’s names are Alicia, Clara, and Bella; they all go about handling their similar situation differently. I came to see that each woman represented Before the Law, With the Law, and Against the Law. Alicia went about solving her problem Before the Law, Bella solved her problem Against the Law and Clara was With the Law. I will analyze each of their specific situations and explain how each is represented in each case. Firstly, Alicia has been a teacher for a couple of years and the assistant principal has being causing serious problems for her. I believe she went about handling her situation by using the Before the Law legal consciousness. I believe she represents the Before the Law legal consciousness because she follows the rules of the system, she collected her data and took notes about the situations that the assistant principle put her in. She very quietly started to find out how to go about filing a legal complaint about her colleague. She then learned all she can learn about how to go about the situation and waited for the best possible moment to file the complaint. Once she filed...
