Belle Review.

Belle is a 2013 British period drama film directed by Amma Asante and produced by Damian Jones. It is based upon a true story of a mixed raced girl Dido Belle; who is played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who was brought up in the late 1700’s in a wealthy family. Dido is the daughter of a high-profile naval officer, Sir John Lindsay (played by Matthew Goode) and a black woman who we know nothing about. In my opinion, if the audience experienced the presence of the mother the story would have been slightly more interesting.
Belle ends up living in an upper class household being cared for by her great uncle and aunt Lord and Lady Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson and Emily Watson) but however doesn’t really experience the lifestyle as she is unable to participate in upper class activities such as dinner parties due to many problems such as the colour of her skin. Dido is raised alongside another grand-niece Elizabeth (played by Sarah Gordon), the two girls become very close almost like sisters therefore when Dido is not involved she feels even more alienated. Because of this, we sympathise with Dido. However parts of the film such as this were not portrayed as powerfully as they could have been. For me this was a let down.
Throughout the film, we think that Dido and Oliver Ashford (James Norton) have a connection which was a pleasant surprise for the family. However, we later experience a plot twist and discover that there is a mutual attraction between Dido and the vicar’s son who is studying law under Lord Mansfield John Davinier (Sam Reid). We then feel a sense of joy for Dido as it was rare for a mixed raced lady to find love especially with a white man in those days.
Intertwined with the love story, is a story based upon slavery. Lord Mansfield is looking at a case which involves a slave ship and slaves being thrown overboard. This case helps to educate Dido as she realises how lucky to be where she is.
In my opinion the film lacks excitement, the issues in the film are not discussed in a lot of detail which lacks interest from the audience. There is also no climax which builds up throughout the film. However, the story line flows well and the actors/actresses selected work well together.

The Beauty and the Beast

...When he turns her away, repulsed by her old and ugly appearance and sneering at the simple but lovely gift, she turns into an Enchantress and punishes him by transforming him into an ugly beast and turns his servants into furniture and other household items. She gives him a magic mirror that will enable him to view faraway events, and also gives him the rose. He must love and be loved in return before all the rose's petals have fallen off, or he will remain a beast forever. Years later, the film's beauty queen, young and enthusiastic lady, a hopeful dreamer, called Belle, is the smartest, best-read person in a small provincial French town. As such, she is hotly pursued by Gaston, the lantern-jawed man. Wandering through her village while reading a book, Belle becomes the focus of a spectacular opening number that captures the atmosphere of the whole film. Bit by bit, the population trickles out to greet Belle and gossip about her, while she herself bemoans the small-mindedness of the place. This beautiful girl is the daughter of Maurice, who is an old inventor, still trying to rise as a phoenix and turn his dreams into a beautiful reality, that offers a better future for his family. Maurice's latest invention is a wood-chopping machine. When he rides off to display the machine at the fair, he loses his way in the woods and stumbles upon the Beast's castle, where he meets the transformed servants Lumiere, a cheeky, yet charming candle, Cogsworth, who is a mature clock with...

Twilight Saga

...selected colors as Belle finds her way to the Beast. The town’s people’s attire is dull: bleak browns, greens, and reds; this shows the conformity of the people and the simple mindedness of the town. Belle’s Papa’s green attire shows conformity as well. No matter how hard he tries to break out and be different, he is always sucked back and consumed by the poor provincial town. Then when Belle becomes happier in the castle, she is depicted in the same green because she is conforming to the castle life and ceasing to push back and long to be free. After connecting with Belle, the Beast changes into the same green. This wardrobe change represents the Beast’s desire to be what Belle wants and what he needs to be to break the spell. Gaston, the manly-man antagonist, is shown wearing a bright red shirt with a mustard collar. The mustard is a mock gold; this shows his need to be first, to be royal. He craves the attention he rakes in. The red signifies hostility. The combination of these colors displays his selfish appetite for power. In the Beast’s introduction and throughout the beginning of the movie, he wears a red cape. Like Gaston’s red attire, it shows hostility. After being turned into a Beast, he is overcome with feelings of rage and selfhatred. 2 Pink and gold are the colors representing the people in the castle, and when Belle arrives at the castle, the dresser tries to costume Belle in Pink. She protests because she doesn’t want to be a part of the life there. Belle is later seen...

A Streetcar Named Desire- the Conflict Between Stanley and Blanche

...Blanche’s conflict is mainly verbal (conflict is about power struggle, who has control over the other characters) Williams presents this through their verbal interactions, his use of language shows their animosity. The conflict is one in which Stanley is constantly squaring up to Blanche as if to see who has the upper hand. The conflict began with Stanley’s suspicions of Blanche when he heard of the demise of Belle Reve. Williams parallels his use of negative language with Blanche’s impressions of Stanley; with Blanche appearing to pull Mitch away from Stanley and by changing who appears have most control over Stella. Williams demonstrates the theme of conflict through verbal and physical interactions as well symbolism as shown below. The first sign of the conflict between Stanley and Blanche is at the very beginning in Act One Scene Two. Blanche has revealed to Stella that their childhood home ‘Belle Reve,’ has been lost, what she doesn’t explain is the nature of how it was lost. When Stella explains to Stanley he begins to grow suspicious of Blanche, thinking that she has sold ‘Belle Reve,’ swindling Stella of her share of the money and through her, swindled him. He begins to rummage through her stuff, looking through her clothing when Blanche appears. Blanche starts off with flirtatiously asking Stanley to do up the buttons on her dress and begins “fishing for a compliment” from Stanley. All this does is rile him up and make him more suspicious of how sincere a person she really...

Parkour

...experience. In these upcoming paragraphs I will be explaining the history and its ups and downs to the sport. In the year of 1902, “a French soldier Georges Herbert was stationed in Saint Pierre, Martinique when all of a sudden volcano explodes.”(American Parkour)From all the chaos that was going on Georges Herbert had an eye-opener, which led to his motto that still holds the truth for the performance of Parkour, "etre fort pour etre utile" which means: "be strong to be useful." Being struck with enlightenment of the native tribes and the way they moved he created the saying that is still used today called “methode naturelle" which involved learning all indispensable athletics. Decades later, another soldier Raymond Belle, positioned in Vietnam has a son named David Belle and teaches him about "methode naturelle".  This new movement of life made a great impact in his life to such a degree that he continues to practice this new style of movement and ends up bringing it to the Parisian suburb of Lisses. Today, these practices have accelerated in life itself. Here are 3 subjects that I’ve come to realization about the mental negativity that keep a mental block from performing these crucial movements.” (American...

Craig Anderson Heat And Violence

...The goals of a literature review are to provide the reader with a critical analysis of scientific literature about a specific topic or question. Writing a summary about other works can demonstrate the depth of familiarity of a chosen topic. In order to further one's understanding, or research, studying the works of others is important because multiple disciplines may have competing explanations for a given subject. Literature review is also structured in a particular style that creates a uniform way for writers to articulate their ideas in a fashion the reader is familiar with. Craig Anderson uses the APA guidelines to create a clear structure for his review studying the effects of heat and violence. In the handbook employees are supposed to have a review after 90 days but they are not being implemented. This leaves the casino with under qualified employees that eventually terminate their employment due to not feeling able to meet the high demands.
