For Georges Perec, this question warrants the response – ‘People who think I have denounced consumer society have understood absolutely nothing about my book’ (Bellos: 1965). It is not as easy however for the everyday reader to fully comprehend the true purpose behind Les Choses. At a glance, one might define the book as a sociological approach in criticising the impact consumerism has had on society. Much to Perec’s disappointment, this consensus became apparent when he won the Renaudot prize for Les Choses in 1965, and many considered it to be a “brilliant exposition of sociological theories…rather than a literary work” (Sheringham 2006: 251). It is the ambiguous nature of Perec’s work in accord with the heavy use of rhetoric along with other literary weapons that is central to understanding the genius behind the man. Once one analyses the subtlety of Les Choses it quickly becomes apparent that the intention is to pose more questions than give straightforward answers. In this essay I will take each aspect of these various literary techniques into account, before formulating a conclusion on the extent to which Perec morally condemns a 1960’s French society seemingly obsessed with consumption. I start with a brief outline...

...war. It fails in the central interrelated criteria of just cause and last resort for jus ad bellum, which I detail first through assessment of the Bush administration’s self-proclaimed just reasoning behind resorting to war against a concept, and the alternatives available to it, I will then detail its failure in the jus in bello criteria of discrimination and proportionality, reasoning through the case of drone warfare. Jus ad bellum I shall firstly focus on the crucial jus ad bellum principle of just cause, holding the only just cause for war to be self-defence . The USA and its allies suffered unjust, unprovoked terror attacks, notably to embassies and battleships, as well as ultimately the 9/11 disaster, and further possessed reputable evidence of other failed attacks. Thus this essay acknowledges that they were under-attack from a powerful and effective enemy, which could be reliably pinpointed as Al Qaeda. These attacks were focused on non-combatants in landmark locations; deliberate targeting for maximum terror spreading effect, which further represented an attack on western freedoms. Hence the assailant satisfied neither jus ad bellum, nor jus in bello, and without immediate and effective action there existed great potential for further unjust attacks. This was the Bush administration’s argument for sufficient reason to declare war in self-defence . However, declaring a war on terror cannot be declaring war in self-defence. The Bush administration was unjustified in declaring...

...consideration of RJPs limitations and recommendation to expand on a more effective realistic recruitment processes. PURPOSE Considerable amount of research has been performed on the impact RJPs have on job applicants’ expectations, satisfaction and employee turnover. Schreurs and Syed (2011) show the importance of RJPs in the recruitment function. RJPs meet the expectations of job applicants (Breaugh 1983, p. 618) by producing a group of desirable applicants in order to improve their interest in the job and enhance the prospect that they will accept a job offer (Schreurs and Syed 2011). After exploring the perceptions of individuals, Richardson, McBey and McKenna (2008) supported the use of a more ‘holist and integrated’ RJP. ...accepted act by humanitarian authorities. As Predominantly killing people cannot be considered a moral action if we defined the ethical acts according to the cultural relativism or even ethical subjectivism. Nonetheless, the concept of Just War (JW), developed from the time of St. Augustine, has another point of view regarding butchery. As it states that to start an ethically justifiable war it must be for a just cause, declared by a lawful authority, the last solution after trying all the possible ways of solving the problem, and have a high probability of success [1]. The theory of JW is divided into three main segments: the first one controls why the war should begin “Jus ad bellum”, the second one determines how to act in the war “Jus in bello”, and eventually the post-war events that should be done “Jus post bellum”. The quoted words are Latin words as the concept of JW was originated by the classical Greek and Roman philosophers like Plato and Cicero and were added to by Christian theologians like Augustine and Thomas Aquinas [2]. JW is a significantly controversial theory that predominantly has many opinions advocating it and others counteracts it. In this paper light will be shed on discussing the essential segments of JW, principles of each segment, and arguments of JW. Let us begin by the principles under which the use of military force is justified “Jus ad bellum”. Firstly, the JW must have a “Just cause”. The Onus here is on the theorists of the JW to state what defines...

... Frank Golden Thanks very much, Jim and Stephane and that concludes our formal remarks. And now we would like to open the call for questions. So operator, if we could have the first question please. Question-and-Answer Session Operator [Operator Instructions]. And our first question comes from Tim Casey with BMO. Please go ahead. Q - Tim Casey Thanks. Question for Stephane, could you talk a little bit about the progression of growth you’re expecting through the quarters this year, particularly in light of some of the macro trends you talked about, but also in terms of price increases which had been offset by some adjustments you had to make last year, just curious of how those will float through to ‘16? A - Stephane Bello Good morning and thanks for the question. Just to remind where we start from, we achieved organic growth of about 1.5% and our guidance for next year is for growth of 2% to 3% excluding recovery, so that would be a 50 to 150 basis point step-up on the growth performance we achieved this year. Now as you look at the progression of growth over the course of the year, there is a couple factors to keep in mind, one is exactly what you mentioned Tim is this commercial adjustments as we continue to make as we are migrating or legacy foreign exchange desktops to our new platform. The bulk of that impact is behind us, --...

...developed by Saint Augustine of Hippo. Looking back at the Bible he realised that although older generations sided with the more peaceful aspects of the Bible (New Testament) the aspects which included violence (Old Testament) could not be ignored. In Mathew 5 it Jesus said “blessed are the peacemakers” however he did not oppose those who crucified him. This links to how war can be justified because Jesus Gods only son did not punish those who purposely killed him without reason. So to punish those with to an extent have a valid reason could be seen as hypocritical. Augustine believed that justified wars were commanded by God in the bible and split his theory into two parts they are; jus ad bellum-just reasons for going to war, and jus in bello-just practice in war. This was then further developed by Aquinas. Jus ad bellum contains seven key points. If these points are met then war can be justified. The points are; just authority-war must be ordered by legitimate authority, just cause-there must be just reason for going to war, just intention- war must be intended to achieve lasting peace, proportionality- the injustice which led to the war must be proportionate to the damage it causes, last resort- all peaceful alternatives must...

...Jus ad bellum[edit] Main article: Jus ad bellum Just cause The reason for going to war needs to be just and cannot therefore be solely for recapturing things taken or punishing people who have done wrong; innocent life must be in imminent danger and intervention must be to protect life. A contemporary view of just cause was expressed in 1993 when the US Catholic Conference said: "Force may be used only to correct a grave, public evil, i.e., aggression or massive violation of the basic human rights of whole populations." Comparative justice While there may be rights and wrongs on all sides of a conflict, to overcome the presumption against the use of force, the injustice suffered by one party must significantly outweigh that suffered by the other. Some theorists such as Brian Orend omit this term, seeing it as fertile ground for exploitation by bellicose regimes. Competent authority Only duly constituted public authorities may wage war. "A just war must be initiated by a political authority within a political system that allows distinctions of justice. Dictatorships (e.g. Hitler's Regime) or deceptive military actions (e.g. the 1968 US bombing of Cambodia) are typically considered as violations of this criterion. The importance of this condition is key. Plainly, we cannot have a genuine process of judging a just war within a system that represses the process of genuine justice. A just war must be initiated by a political authority within a political system that allows distinctions...
