The first two times I read through the script I understood the basic outline of the scene, but nothing above that. The context helped me place why Benedick was surprised by the discussion his friends were having and also helped me understand the meaning of a couple lines. Additionally, the context helped me to understand why Beatrice wasn’t showing any kindness in return for Benedick’s efforts to be kind. It was easy to tell that the friends of Benedick were purposefully allowing Benedick to overhear them after watching the first video clip. The second clip wasn’t as helpful to me, as it was significantly shorter and contained only a small portion of the scene. The second clip was set in modern times as well, which didn’t impact my understanding at all because I couldn’t get the full effect of the scene. However, when I was watching the first video clip, I started to question why Benedick hid when he heard other people coming. He would’ve known that other people were aware of where he was, especially since Beatrice was able to find him to call him to dinner, so it seems odd that he would hurry and hide. Perhaps he didn’t want to talk to anyone or had was hiding out of instinct after being startled. Regardless, the most interesting part to contemplate is that he stuck around to hear all of this dialogue about Beatrice liking him. At this moment we see that to some degree he liked what he was hearing, otherwise, he could have just walked away. Additionally, evidence for this was shown when Benedick was left alone again to think about what he had just heard. He suddenly changed his mindset from teasing Beatrice to deciding that he was going to try and love her. At least in my experience, no one changes that quickly unless they already wanted what
