...The Comparable Worth Debate March 20, 2012 The Comparable Worth Debate Comparable worth means getting the same amount of pay for jobs of equal value in an organization. This is completely different from the concept of “equal pay” which means that workers who perform the same duties with the same job title get the exact same wages. Comparable worth is a recognized strategy for determining job compensation. If an organization is going to put a specific value on a function, it should also put the same value on other functions that are of equal importance. Comparable worth remains an undeveloped concept. Many court cases have been heard in reference to comparable worth but the suits were unsuccessful as the procedure is not clear. (The Law and Compensation and Benefits, 2009) If a company values a position, they should show the employees that they are valued and appreciated through salary and wages. I am certain that most employees would agree. As the HR department’s director, James Bledsoe, should consider the issue of comparable worth for reasons that involve legal and ethical consequences as well as the organizational structure. The pay system that a company uses reflects that company’s culture. The culture determines the policies and guidelines that are in place, the company’s expectations, and the way that employees carry out the company’s mission. Employees are more likely to coordinate their behavior with company goals without the need for vast procedures and mounds...

...The Uncommon Reader The novella “The Uncommon Reader” by Alan Bennett is based on the story of a queen. It focuses on her transformation to be from a queen responsible for the everyday ‘noble’ chores to a vivid reader. It traces a journey of how it all began and eventually led to the queen accepting the thoughts of the author and then after a period of addiction, how she becomes a writer. Towards the beginning of the novella, the queen was not that fond of reading. Reading was just a commonplace task that some people did for the sake of it. It didn’t fascinate her at all. As expected from a queen of such high stature, her job was to make sure that the state was functioning in a smooth fashion. She didn’t take reading as a very noble task, as according to novella, she was a doer ‘reading wasn’t doing-she was a doer’. Hence owing to this very fact, the Queen had a very low and derogatory opinion about reading. The Queen had this psyche which made her finish a book once she started it, regardless of the fact that she liked it or not. She didn’t read it with an impulse to learn and build on her knowledge. The novella also states that Queen didn’t like being contradicted, and if she came across any reading that wasn’t in line with her thoughts and actions, she used to lose her patience at it. Her lack of interest in reading can be judged by the incident when Norman, a servant sarcastically remarked about her reading sense by stating that the book ‘My dog Tulip’, must be comprehended...

...different way. When it comes to the record label and the changing relationship, I would advice the band to stay true to themselves. The record label wanted the band to change the record and I would have to agree with the band when they said no. It is their record and they are the artists, why should they change something that is a reflection of who they are? I think it was fine for the band to pull away from the record label because as a result, they ended up with more freedom to release the album the way they wanted to. The record label basically paid for the band to make the record, then turned around and gave it right back to the band which in my opinion was not smart on their part. As far as the conflicts between Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett, I do not know if there was much to be done that could have helped the situation. The conflicts that they had would have more than likely ended up causing problems at some point in time. Jay and Jeff both had ideas that they wanted and both were not willing to back down from the other. In my opinion, Jay was ready to take more of the spotlight in the band and Jeff was not willing to give any of it up. Jay and Jeff are both the leader type and this situation is an example of too many chiefs trying to run the tribe. If I were the manager, I would maybe sit down and talk to the two and see if there was any kind of compromise. Maybe see if...

...be humorous or to amuse by activating laughter. The History Boys is noted as a comedy-drama but overall has a deeper intention. Ironically, the gravitational topics discussed are opposite to the comedy; just like Hector and Irwin as these characters function in the play is to exemplify the comedy and gravity. But, why did Bennett incorporate these characters in? Bennett cleverly distinguished between the opposite values of a teacher and created two opposite characters to enhance the comedy and gravity of them. But, why is Bennett’s play labeled as a comedy? Comedy is used throughout the History Boys by Bennett through selected techniques such as parody, contrasting characters and their clever juxtapositions within the plot. But, the elements of a more somber tone flourish throughout the play. Comedy is clearly a main influence of Bennett’s when writing The History Boys as there are several humorous scenes in it. The mock interview disagrees with the critics view. ‘How do I define history? It’s just one fucking thing after another.’ This is an example of one of the entertaining moments of the History Boys as he wouldn’t say that in an interview. Bennett proves to the audience that Rudge adds to the comedy. The French scene shows the Head teacher contrast with the student intelligence. The persuasion of the Headmaster into speaking French and the willingness of the boys to encourage this shows the connection of the boys and Hector and how they mock people with essentially...

...This essay will focus on the question “Was R.B. Bennett a good choice for the 11th Prime Minister of Canada?” To access the extent on how effective R.B. Bennett was on Canada between 1930 to 1935, this essay will help identify whether or not Bennett help shape Canada for good or for bad. After Bennett was inaugurated after former prime minister William Lyon Mackenzie King, he had a rough road ahead of him being elected at the start of The Great Depression. Only having done little to nothing after his first year in office and the public making jokes, Bennett had no choice but to revise President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “New Deal” to help bring Canada out of the Depression. When the 1930’s election came rolling around, there were many assumptions that prime minster Mackenzie King would not be re-elected back into office. On the Conservative Party, the candidate that was running up against King was R.B. Bennett. When King made his speech in the House of Commons about how he would not give a “five-cent piece to any [Conservative] government,” R.B. Bennett was seen to be the next prime minster. When the Conservatives won 134 seats and the Liberals only won 90, the people of Canada saw a bright future for the country. Bennett’s first year in office was probably the height of his career. When he entered his office he had action on his mind and that’s exactly what Canada got. One of the very first things that R.B. Bennett did as prime minister was creating the Unemployment Relief Act...

...University of West Alabama The Murder of Helen Jewett by Patricia Cohen HY513 Jeanette Hollis May 2, 2010 The Murder of Helen Jewett by Patricia Cohen is a non fiction entertaining and dramatic book that discusses several perspectives of Victorian era New York City. This narrative is about men and women, clerks, prostitutes, legal codes, tabloid journalism, politics and capitalism. This book is considerably more than a shocking murder and trial as it becomes a carefully investigated examination of a growing city. Helen Jewett born Dorcas Doyen, simply a prostitute, one of many dishonored working women in New York City was murdered and set on fire by her attacker. The suspect, Richard P. Robinson was a normal young man about town working in business and frequenting brothels. Although severe attacks were accepted in antebellum cities, prostitutes frequently endured abuse and exploitation. Helen Jewett’s murder was one of the first crimes where a mixture of sex, lies and violence revealed to the public gender inequities and class privilege that had previously been hidden from society. Helen Jewett was born in Augusta Maine. When her parents died a local judge adopted her and tried to educate her. Helen was very beautiful and had an affair with a banker which became a scandal. Helen moved to New York City. She became employed at one of the many brothels operating in New York at that time. Richard Robinson, the suspect in Helen Jewett’s...
