The first major event that happens is In Act 1 Scene 4 where Romeo attends a party at the Capulet household. At this party is where he meets Juliet and they both fall in love. This is an important event because during this scene is where Juliet finds out they both belong to rival families. Which sets up the idea of forbidden love because Juliet herself admits she fell in love with her worst enemy (Romeo) before she even knew who he was. The audience has to understand that the two cannot be in love due their feuding families. So when Juliet tells the nurse she has fallen for Romeo the audience must feel a sense of betrayal. Because that is what Juliet feels loving both her lover and family. But the audience must also feel excitement for her

Loyalty In Romeo And Juliet

...Loyalty and betrayal are often found in Shakespearean plays to add interest and tension to the story. Romeo and Juliet is a Shakespearean play that displays these qualities. In the play, there were many different types of loyalty that progressed over time and were constantly being tested. When the loyalties were being tested by risks and threats, some characters resisted them while others did not. The Friar remained loyal to Romeo while the nurse betrayed Juliet when the nurse was tested with threats. However, one of the strongest bonds in the play was the relationship of Romeo and Juliet. The Friar was very devoted to Romeo, as he was allegiant to Romeo even after Romeo’s death. The Friar took the role as Romeo’s father, although...

Romeo and Juliet

...question on everyone’s mind is whether Romeo and Juliet were driven by true lust or love? Some may argue that they lust over each other, and do not truly love each other. Sexual desire is not the case for Romeo and Juliet; it is merely inexperience and immaturity. Firstly, Romeo is just another confused teenager, he does not know love, but he wants love. Romeo is not in love with Juliet or Rosaline, but rather, in love with the idea of love. He goes off of impressions and does not know who Juliet really is, due to the brief amount of time they have been together. In the early parts of the play, Romeo is shown with internal conflict, desperately in love with Rosaline, but the minute he sees Juliet, he changes his mind. Juliet is also inexperienced with love, so she has strong feelings over Romeo's impression.  Secondly, it is impossible for one to fall in love at first sight, despite popular belief. Love is something that takes time to develop slowly. However, a week is not enough time for love to develop. It is true that Romeo and Juliet were devoted to each other until their very deaths, but it was not true love that they had. Love and infatuation differ so slightly that this remains a common misconception even today.  Lastly, Juliet had men hand-picked by her parents, whom she did not approve of. Juliet was a teenager and felt trapped underneath her parents' constant reminder than she had no freedom - and so she rebelled. Juliet never was able to have her say in the...

Romeo and Juliet

...Romeo and Juliet: Who’s to Blame? What started as one of the greatest love stories, turned into a tragic struggle, in Shakespeare's, Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet realize that being together wont be auk with their feuding families, but they are selfish with their love and have no idea the consequences that will unfold. Romeo and Juliet had help with their tragic demise. Tybalt, Lord Capulet and Friar Lawrence also played a part in their lives. Juliet;s haughty cousin Tybalt is largely to blame for the lover’s untimely parting. Tybalt is always trying to start fights with Romeo or anybody who shares the last name Montague, and at last one of these fights goes to far and he ends up killing Mercutio. Also Tybalt hates Romeo, and would to anything to have him be gone, and while this doesn’t have immediate effect on Romeo and Juliet, in the end Tybalt dies by Romeo’s hand which in turn gets Romeo banished. Tybalt shows his hate for Romeo when at the ball he says, “I will withdraw; but this intrusion shall/Now seeming sweet, convert to bitter gall” (I.v.100-101). What Tybalt means by this is that he wont kill Romeo then, at the ball, but he will in the end kill him. Tybalt plays a major part in why Romeo and Juliet kill themselves in the end, he unintentionally, but would have liked it, separated them with his death. Lord Capulet also indirectly caused Romeo and his daughters pain, and eventual death. Lord Capulet tries to marry juliet to Paris when she is already married...

Romeo and Juliet

...true meaning of love is one thing, but understanding it is another. Love is difficult. It is cruel, out of balance and weakened by betrayal, but it can also be kind, accepting and beneficial at times. In the revolutionary tragic play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the complicated impact of love is significant on the passionate, violent and often desperate lives of the citizens of Verona. The play emphasizes true love and its consequences between the main characters, Romeo and Juliet, as well as significant others. Shakespeare exhibits love in its many complex forms, demonstrating how true love has significant potential, but it requires heavy sacrifice. Romeo and Juliet are the star crossed lovers who take their own lives; their fate calls them to be together and the role of destiny is a powerful influence from the start of the play. Although the Capulet’s and Montague’s would not approve of their children’s love, Romeo and Juliet are convinced that they can overcome the hatred and feud; they are willing to shed their old lives to be together. Juliet is willing to go to any lengths to pursue her love interest, “Deny thy father and refuse thy name;/ Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,/ and I’ll no longer be a Capulet” (II, ii, 34-36). Juliet experiences a personality change throughout the play as the love she encounters towards Romeo encourages her to rebel against her family whom would not approve of the young lovers relationship. She continues to disreguard parental...

Dynamic Relationships In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

...The dynamics in the relationship between Juliet and the Nurse are displayed through the power of persuasion and the methods used by the playwright, William Shakespeare in the play Romeo and Juliet. These two characters have a dynamic relationship because of the tension in their relationship. Juliet is educated which means she has the power and authority to convince the Nurse to believe her opinions meanwhile the Nurse can influence Juliet to agree with her beliefs because she is a parental figure. These tensions and attributes are displayed to the audience through tensions, conflict, and structure. While the Nurse talks with Juliet and Lady Capulet about Juliet’s future, she displays her uneducated qualities and attributes through her use of bawdy humour. By using bawdy humour, she is making herself look uneducated to her superiors like Juliet and Lady Capulet. She makes this known to the audience by saying...

Evolution of Romeo and Juliet

...English Essay- Evolution of Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeare’s well-known play, Romeo and Juliet addresses the ill-fated love of two young children from feuding households set in Verona. Even though they are both children and Juliet is younger than Romeo, they both mature at different rates and ways. In addition, they are very different characters. Romeo is withdrawn, whereas Juliet is bold and brave. The differences go on and are made more obvious as the play progresses. This essay will highlight these differences and how they evolve as characters through the course of this play. Both the characters strike us as very different when we meet them for the first time. Romeo is recovering from his unrequited love. He is shown to be pining with love for a woman called Rosaline. He seems very immature in the beginning as he loses track of time and he stays in a dark room throughout the day due to his love-sickness. The play's emphasis on characters' eyes and the act of looking accords with Romeo's role as a blind lover who doesn't believe that there could be another lady more fair than his Rosaline. Romeo denies that he could be deluded by love, the "religion" of his eye. This zeal, combined with his rejection of Benvolio's advice to find another love to replace Rosaline, highlights Romeo's immaturity as a lover. We immediately feel as though his feelings are not real love, it is more of a infatuation. Romeo is in love with the concept of being in love. Juliet on the other hand is more...

The Norms and Values in Verona in Romeo and Juliet

...society at the time had an impact on Romeo and Juliet’s relationship. I will explore how the norms and values within institutions in Verona such as ‘the family’ and ‘the church’ played a role the couple’s fate. A theme throughout the play was love. All the violence and hatred was a result of Romeo and Juliet’s unexpected relationship. The prologue was a sonnet; Shakespeare used the sonnet to remind the audience of romance. Lot’s of love poems at the time were in sonnet form. He was reminding the audience that ultimately what causes all the violence and betrayal is love. Religion and the Church had a massive impact and held a great power over people during the 16th Century. In some ways religion was more powerful than the law. When Romeo and Juliet first met they fell madly in love, ‘My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to smooth that rough tough with a tender kiss’. So to live by the moral rules set by the church they had to marry. Friar Lawrence’s role in the church gave him a lot of power and earned him a lot of respect and so the couple were over joyed when he agreed to wed them in the church ‘In one respect I’ll they assist be; For this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your households’ rancour to pure love.’ Religion is a powerful force within the play as a whole. During the 16th century people couldn’t live together before marriage and divorce was practically impossible. So when the couple wed they were aware that Juliet couldn’t be forced to marry Paris...

Some of his most famous plays include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, Julius Caesar, Twelfth Night, The Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummer Night’s Dream Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It, Richard III, Henry V, and King John (Wikipedia.org). According to Alchin, “He is the most widely read of all Authors and the popularity of the Life and Works of Shakespeare, in English speaking countries, is second only to the Bible” (William-shakespeare.info). Shakespeare continued to write up until his death in 1616. Interestingly, upon Shakespeare’s...

Is Shakespeare Relevant Today Essay

...Is Shakespeare relevant to modern students today you ask? Of course he is! As students, who doesn’t love a bit of murder and revenge like in Hamlet, or maybe a story of true love like in Romeo and Juliet, or to hate the real villain of a story, like Lady Macbeth. When you think of Shakespeare, you imagine a very old weird looking man with a daggy moustache and hair, whose words have to be repeated a few times to really understand them and story lines that make even the strangest shows on TV these days seem boring. It would be easy to say that his 39 plays are very old fashioned and not relevant for modern students, however, his themes of hate, betrayal, love, prejudice, revenge and family breakdowns are all relevant for us today. The fact that he was able to show all these themes in his many comedies, tragedies and histories is amazing, how many play writers or authors today can say they cover so many themes in their books or plays? Perhaps my favourite thing about Shakespeare after researching for this blog was his dislike for people in his plays by using insults like “lump of foul deformity” or “poisonous hunchback toad” and “mountain of mad flesh” or my favourite “not so much brain as...

Effects of the Supernatural

...In the seventeenth century, Shakespeare wrote the two plays, Hamlet and Macbeth. In the play Hamlet, the protagonist Hamlet is a Danish prince whose father has just been murdered and mother married his father’s brother. After seeing a ghost in the image of his late father, Hamlet engages in conversation with the ghost and learns the truth of his father’s demise. In Macbeth, the story is centered around a Scottish thane(duke) of Glamis named Macbeth who has just won a great battle for the King Duncan. Along the way home from the battle, Macbeth is encountered by the paranormal and told he will be the next king of Scotland. Although both play’s characters encounter early on and are changed by the supernatural, Macbeth’s plotline ultimately depends more on the supernatural. The celestial tampering in Hamlet and Macbeth are akin to each other because it provokes the characters, changes the way they act towards others, and caused both main characters to lose their lives. The provocation caused by the paranormal inspired Hamlet to seek vengeance for his father and Macbeth to send “[Duncan] to heaven or to hell.”(-Macbeth, Macbeth 2.1.77) It also prompted Hamlet to “put on an antic disposition.” (-Hamlet, Hamlet 1.5.192) Macbeth also began killing off his friends one by one as a result of the interference made by the otherworldly. The tampering triggered the tragic death of Hamlet because he had sought out redemption against Claudius who had already plotted to kill Hamlet through...

Love

...Love is a dark and intangible feeling that often exposes it's targets to danger, pain and suffering. Love is the pillar for friendship, yet it works to weaken us, and drives us to depend on and be sensitive of others. Love is built on a foundation of trust, a thin barrier between formality and chaos. Which leaves room for a selected group of people to abuse the trust and take advantage. Some might argue that love brings humans together and promote cooperation, yet cooperation and unionism are two very short fangled areas, as they will soon be contaminated with betrayal and lies. Love is a dangerous component of life and it works to deceive and manipulate other people's trusts. At young ages, humans have a natural instinct to befriend people, but this is what weakens them and makes them vulnerable to power hungry people such as bullies. In kindergarten, we have watched countless children fall into the hands of bullies. These innocent children end up working as mindless slaves on behalf of the bully, or they get publically ridiculed and emotionally hurt. These malevolent children gained their sadistic powers by taking advantage of the innocent. Ingenuous children haven't seen the world as a whole yet, so they easily endow their love and kind hearts into the wrong investments. Their love has been abused, yet if there were no such a thing as love, nobody would get hurt. Jealousy, which buds from the tree of love, motivates people to commit irrational actions.
