“Integrity is a fundamental prerequisite for managers. The management of an organization may have only a few ways of influencing the degree of integrity displayed in it, namely leading by example, selecting appropriate staff, and setting clear rules of conduct (Arnold, 2012, p. 188). This statement listed in the text elucidates exactly why it is that the Ghanaian economy may be encountering many issues. According to Mr. Prince Kofi Amoabeng, CEO of UT Bank, Africa’s leaders have become very greedy, selfish, and overall corrupt (Adofo, 2013). Moreover, the economic crisis in Ghana has been attributed to the country’s lack of ability to turn its present and future challenges into economic opportunities. It is without a doubt that corruption is an iniquity that stagnates growth in countries. With this being said, the following paper will further discuss how the issues occurring in the Ghanaian economy may be attributed to poor leadership.
Undoubtedly, the role of a president is extremely important and must be entrusted into the hands of one who displays integrity. The current president of Ghana, President John Dramani Mahama, is notorious for having taken part in the infamous STX housing deal. The STX housing deal is said to be the most corrupt deal in the history of Ghana. Under the agreement, “Ghanaians were to be short-changed by the construction of 30,000 units of houses for the security agencies at the cost of $1.5 billion with most of them being a single-bedroom apartment; though GRIDCO had earlier indicated their ability to build that same unit of houses at a very minimal cost with an improved technology (Mohammed, 2012). In reference to the text, “the spirit of an organization is shaped at its very summit, and it is from there that a corporate culture of integrity, high performance, and responsibility must emanate” (Arnold, 2012, pg. 188). With this being said, we are able to postulate that the economic crisis occurring in Ghana may be due to the current president’s lack of integrity. It may be said that immoral conduct, especially by a president, affects the general public’s view. “The portrayal of some top executives in the media and their apparent scope of influence leads people to believe that misconduct by managers is the norm, and that the business itself is equally immoral” (Arnold, 2012, p. 242). With this statement in mind, we are able to realize how President John Dramani Mahama’s immoral conduct may be negatively influencing other officials. As president, John Dramani Mahama serves as a role model for other leaders, and his actions impact social cohesion. Therefore, taking part in events such as the STX housing deal undoubtedly negatively affected the nation. Moreover, Ghana is facing a financial crisis and soaring inflation. However, an article recently stated “Somewhere this year, President Mahama brokered another shady deal on behalf of the government to purchase a luxurious customized Embraer 190 Presidential jet under the epithets of a ‘Strategic Airlift Aircraft’ for the Ghana Armed Forces (Mohammed, 2012). Investing in a pricey customized jet instead of utilizing that money to feed the people of his nation demonstrates a lack of responsibility and overall competence. As a leader, President Mahama should scrupulously define the minimum acceptable outcome before making a key decision.
It is without a doubt that corruption is an iniquity that stagnates growth in countries. Immoral conduct such as taking part in the STX housing deal and brokering a deal in order to purchase a luxurious customized jet demonstrates just how Ghana’s leader has taken part in corruption and immortality. With this being said, we are able to postulate how the issues occurring in the Ghanaian economy may be attributed to poor leadership by President John Dramani Mahama .
