Does Gender Biases Still Exist in America?

The American society places particular gender biases on females. Society has forced the feminine gender is still inferior to their masculine peers that are supposed to be equal. Therefore, I would like to take the time now to give recognition to all of our nation’s prominent females who have overcome the obstacles of discrimination. On average, females tend to get paid lower wages and struggle to get and keep leadership positions.
Women have always received relatively lower salaries than men. It has been said that for every dollar a man makes a woman only makes seventy-nine cents. According to Marianne Calnan’s general marketeer’s survey, there is a 21% pay gap between males and females. Colnan’s …show more content…
Since the dawn of time men has always been the natural leaders of society, so businesses often rely on this belief to choose their pacesetters. However, I personally believe that this is extremely unreasonable. Women have shown countless times, such as during World War I, that they can do any and everything that a man can do. In Deborah’s article “The Myth of Servant- Leadership: A Feminist Perspective” the concept of the genderless approach of leadership is simply a myth.
Sexism is still overwhelming in today's society despite the battle that women are making for themselves. Sexism is a particular concern for society when considering its effect in the workplace. Sexism has always been a particular problem in the labor market especially with the formation of capitalism. In the last half of the 20th century this has been especially highlighted due to the increase of woman entering the labor market. This has brought forth the need for equal opportunity for both sex's to be passed in 1975. It stated that discrimination of a person's sex whether male or female was unlawful in employment, union membership, education, provision of goods, services,

Anti-Bias Childhood Education

...Anti Bias Childhood for an Anti Bias Adulthood As America progresses, we encounter many forms of bias but still demand equality. In our country, it is a constitutional right to be treated equally. We encounter forms of bias in our every day to lives in the simplest forms, but it is the human self that decides what a fair course of action or thinking is. Being judgmental begins with the way we people are brought up. If being educated about the progressing world around us helps to keep negative judgments to a minimum, we could slowly make our way up on the “Happiest Countries” list. We call it equality and unfortunately, we are far from perfect when it comes to treating out neighbor like we’d want to be treated. The way to achieve such a feat can only be done by educating the public about their innate bias towards others. However, success is not achieved overnight. We get a little closer to total equality every day, even if it is a slow journey. The first step to make progress in this journey is for people to be educated. An anti-bias curriculum needs to be implemented into classrooms nationwide because it will lead to greater understanding between mainstream America and non-mainstream America, promote acceptance of diversity, and allow the already diverse to accept themselves. Bias is everywhere. It is impossible to live life without some form of bias. However, what anti-bias education seeks to do is enlighten people about the differences and similarities between different...

Tocqueville's Theory Of Bias

...within our country and among the rest of the world. Unfortunately, it is impossible to deny that bias exists in the media and drastically alters public perception of current events. However, the presence of bias both in media and among the public is often unintentional. While bias may always exist to some extent, these biases are not detrimental to the well-being of our society if a free “Marketplace of Ideas” is supported and encouraged. Though my roommate is correct in saying that journalists may exhibit bias in their writing, bias often exists unintentionally, even when means are taken to prevent it. Media scholars have deemed this the “Theory of Unintended News Distortion”. As Herbert Gans describes in Deciding What’s News, “As long as their intent is to exclude conscious personal values, then opinions become ‘subjective reactions’ which follow from objectively...

...been given bias and prejudice treatment from his surroundings because he was Muslim. Sadly, this statement has held truth too many feelings held by Muslims in America. Since 9-11, the treatment given to Muslim in American have been worse than it has ever been in years. Being an American Muslim has been a testing task. Post 9-11 has altered the mindset of the American people because of incorrect information. Although there are laws set against certain prejudice and bias acts, they still exist. One question we all as America need to ask ourselves is have we played a part in the way Muslims feel in today’s society. If the answer is yes, will you admit it and will you change? Most Americans will deny it, but as a society, we may fear American Muslims or have acted bias, racist, or even prejudice against them. Not all Muslims are terrorist! The Muslim population was once very small but has increased greatly in the 20th century. In 2005, nearly 96,000 people of Islamic countries have become permanent American citizens. Then in 2009, there was another 115,000 Muslims who became legal residents. Muslims in American are not only Arab descent. They are very racially diverse religious groups and come from various backgrounds. “Native-born American Muslims are mainly African Americans who make up about a quarter of the total Muslim population. Many of these have converted to Islam during the last seventy years” (Borelli, & Christiansen 2011). Muslims are populating America in large numbers...

Subtle Bias

...Running head: SUBTLE BIAS SHARED WITHIN AN AMERICAN SOCIAL CONSTRUCT Subtle Bias as a Social Construct In America May 28, 2012 Abstract An understanding of the subtle bias that affects our society is a form of humanistic deception. Although the norms in America appear to be uniform; we will see that biases are influenced by various social factors such as stereotype, prejudice, discrimination, and labeling including the Attribution Theory. This paper will compare and contrast scientific literature to gain more insight into the subtlety of this social construct. I am seeking not to understand the reason why we as social beings are bias, but to simply show that this distorted truth exist. Subtle Bias as a Social Construct In America My theory of unconscious bias along with the self-affirmation process that accompanies it clouds our worldview in our present society. We all do it no matter how accepting we appear to be or even claim to be. Irrational thoughts are usually based on a worldview that illustrates our interpretation of the world we live in (Wilson, 2001). This worldview is a set of assumptions and beliefs that we hold on to that guide our behavior. It helps us to make sense out of our lives. It determines what we think about human nature, causes of emotional issues, and where bias comes from (Entwistle, 2004). There is always some form of discriminatory behavior or covert prejudice prevailing within our essence. Unfortunately, there is a strong manipulative...

Americans around the world try to find the reasoning behind kneeling some saying it's disrespectful towards soldiers fighting for our country others saying he was exercising his first amendment rights. As we argue over his actions we seem to lose sight of what kaepernick was really protesting for. Sociology in Criminal System

...interest but very complicating. There are some many different aspects on what can be touched upon. The criminal justice system is known to be very biased. In specific terms the system is racial bias and unfair. The America uses a formal social control, to deal with crimes. Statistics show a fair difference and connection between race and the percentage of people convicted of crimes. Other components influence these percentages but always seem to come back to race. The racial unfairness has taken a toll on the American people and contrasts the idea that America was originally built on Incredible as it is America is one of the most tolerant nations in the world. America is a country that was built on freedom, pride, happiness, and equality. Though this is common knowledge and an allusion of the American people, the country has some faults. Equality is a major moral in America that was fought for in history and even in today's society. Throughout our history minority groups have fought hard for there rights and we have accepted the fact that its wrong to discriminate. It is agreed that racial discrimination is wrong as well (Banks, 2009, p 79). Racism has been a problem in America seen the country was founded. Slavery was a form of racism in the early centuries of America. Our judicial system has been a pride and joy for some Americans for others criminals off the streets and keeps us protected. Media Bias

...Media Bias and how it affects our country negatively English 112 Spring The biases the media has are bigger than conservative or liberal. They are all about getting ratings, making money and about doing stories that are easy to cover. This may seem like a trite statement but it hold enormous amount of truth. As Americans, we trust what reporters write in the newspaper, and say on television and radio stations. We expect them to report the truth. However, current media outlets distort stories and certain new reports are getting too much attention. The most important stories are never seen on television or read in the newspaper, or heard on the radio stations, while minor and trivial stories get the most coverage. Hence celebrity engagements, divorce, entrance to rehab centers and DUI cases that are sold to the media. Americans are then left without valuable information contrary to what story is getting 24- hour news coverage. Media bias is a term used to describe prejudice in news and media reports, in which is perceived as an imbalance or unfair presentation of facts or selective reporting of which events or facts reported. The main point here is when biases in media distorts certain stories, and other stories are spoken about entirely too much it hurts the democracy in America. The media, in that case, fails to focus on real issues that underlie the American culture, it has one-sided opinions, favoring a liberal’s point of view, and it caters to the majority...

Media Bias In The United States

...Everyday millions of Americans gather information from media outlets to keep up with current news. The concern with many different media sources discussing political issues is bias, and people have lost trust in them because of it (Farhi 94). Bias is a recurring theme in media and reporters have used this to their advantage to support the topic or person they are discussing to gain support from the party they are covering (Bargo 60). Media Bias has been an issue for a long time, such as in 1798 when “four acts of legislation known as the Alien and Sedition Acts” (Benson 6) were passed to prevent people from putting out “false” information of the “government or the President” (9). While there is, of course, bias from the Republican Party (Schaller 63-66), the Democratic Party dominates by controlling the majority of media and major cities (Bargo 60). The major factor that leads to Democratic control of the media is the control of major cities and universities(Bargo 56-57). Media outlets and...

An Analysis of Media Within the Arab-Israeli Conflict

...Arab-Israeli Conflict “Unless and until something concrete is done about addressing the Israeli-Palestinian issue you won't get a real start on the war against terrorism.” – Bob Hawke The media is used for many different reasons. Since technology has advanced, media is wide spread mainly through social networks such as Twitter and Facebook. Since the first Zionist Conference in 1897, Palestine has fought to keep its land. Ever since, the Arab-Israeli conflict has been in the center of media news. Subsequently, in 1948, war was declared for the land between Israel and Palestine. Different sources have been bias and in favour of Israel in regards to how they describe the conflict, statistics and other governments’ support. The media has been bias and in favour of Israel because of how they describe the conflict. Firstly, the descriptions of the same events that have occurred differ between Israel and Palestine. For example, the legal status labeled replicates different positions of the West bank and Gaza Strip. One could be called a “disputed territories and the other “Occupied territories”. Although both are considered to be part of Palestine, it is labeled in favour of how the Israelis would call it. Secondly, when addressing the Israeli occupied areas, it has many names. For example, the blockage between the Palestinians and Israelis can be a security fence or apartheid wall. At the same time, it can...

American Justice

...Bias in Our Court System….is it fair or unfair justice??? America was built on the premise of everyone having equal rights. After years of British tyranny our forefathers felt they wanted a system where they will not be improperly punished without facts. In fact the framers of the Constitution felt they needed a system where everyone gets a fair shot. In America everyone who is accused of a crime is supposed to have a fair trial and is assumed innocent until proven guilty. Sadly, however, some would argue America’s criminal justice system has become more twisted and unfair than ever and that the rule of law has basically been vanquished in America’s criminal justice system. Outcomes of cases are generally decided now by the prosecutors and more plea bargaining is the norm over trial by jury. Yet so many people in our society today feels that people in the system gets equal opportunities. Although some people end up with different sentences and punishments people say that the American court system is a fair system. America has slowly turned into a system where justice and fairness is overruled by money and power. In the media today many people are committing crimes and walking away with a slap on the wrist. Many social media and news shows the bias in court systems through their broadcasts of issues. The American justice system is biased in their convictions and sentencing through racial disproportion, social structure, and economic standing. Our criminal justice...

Even further, imagine losing your life for a wrong you never perpetrated. According to the National Registry of Exonerations, 1 in 25 defendants sentenced to the death penalty in the United States are later proven innocent. Due to the millions of incarcerations annually in America and the lack of documentation of exonerations for criminal cases other than those with capital punishment, it is impossible to tell how many innocent men and women spent their lives facing wrongful convictions. This tremendous flaw in the legal system executes many faultless Americans and...
