ABSTRACT Big data has posed both challenges and opportunity in our present world of technology sciences. The challenges related to searching, analyzing, manipulating, and organizing are experienced when data explode, this challenges cannot be assign to one sector or field because it has encroach almost all sector relating to healthcare, retailing, manufacturing, governmental institutions, financial services, physical and life sciences. These big data when well managed with the right strategies and IT infrastructure, can support organization in analysis, decision making, better business intelligence, enhance communications capabilities and enrich collaboration, like in the case of VOLVO car corporation whose challenges was transform to better anticipated needs of customer, ad-hoc analysis and employees making inform decision other than guess work.

HOW VOLVO CAR CORPORATION INTEGRATED THE CLOUD INTO ITS NETWORKS. Volvo need a global IT infrastructure because its customers are globally, which inspired the car company to select WINDOWS AZURE. The company wanted a new infrastructure to match their huge data challenges, the cloud infrastructure uses the ETL (extract transform load) to stream huge data from the previous DBMS (database management systems) with ford into a Volvo data warehouse via the cloud, building data mart where the huge data was well managed for retrieval, analysis, incorporating better link between the various unit. Their largest markets are the United States, Sweden, China, Germany and the UK. Volvo has taken vehicle diagnostics to another level by using the data transferred from their vehicles to improve the quality and performance of their overall fleet on the street and on the assembly line. In 1999 Volvo began collecting diagnostic read-out (DRO) data as a tool to help them get a better view into the performance and mechanical failure under actual field conditions. There are several factors to the diagnostic read- out that Volvo has to use in order for this information to be considered “useable data.” Diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) are generated when the vehicle presents some sort of fault, it is then stored in the engine control unit (ECU). The next step is where Volvo took the next in order to transfer data in knowledge. At a typical dealership the service technician would connect his code analyzer to the vehicle’s code output connection. He would then use this information in order to provide or suggest what type if any maintenance or repairs are needed. ...Challenges of Big Data Data driven decision making is one of many benefits Big Data provides, but before benefits can be discussed one needs to look into the challenges related to Big Data. Prior to the hard drive era, people logged data on paper and eventually stored it in a locker room. With so much data at hand, it was merely impossible for one to collate all of it into a structured format. Besides, analysis of this same very data was very unlikely to happen or likely to happen in a timeline that did not suit its purpose. In spite of being in a technological advanced world, we face a similar issue with data overload. The one factor that differentiates us from the past would be digital storage. I tend to look at this as a bittersweet blessing; we now have data that is accessible, but as we keep adding data at today’s frequency, utilizing it will become a slow and painful process. That being said, let’s take a deeper dive into the challenges we face regarding Big Data. In my opinion, Data acquisition would be the root cause of all our challenges. Due to the fear of losing out on important information, people tend to store everything; I like to think of this as hoarding of data. If we were to figure out a way to segregate important data and leave the junk out, transition into subsequent processes would be simpler.
