An important mini-threshold that should be incorporated into Big History’s sixth unit is the human language system. Our verbal communication format was tremendously important to the advances and developments of the early human species, which is exactly what unit six is based on. By providing an efficient format of conveying descriptive information to each other, language assisted our ancestors in working together and coordinating to achieve goals, creating a sense of community through interaction, and finally, making the idea of collective learning more viable and intricate.
One of the ways that the language system assisted in the development of early humans was by allowing them to more easily collaborate and work together. A Nautilis article …show more content…
Communities allow individuals to interact with one another, to develop relationships, and to share experiences and thoughts. Without community, life would be an isolated and lonely nightmare. What does language have to do with any of this? Well, language is key stepping stone in building this tightly-knit circle of people. Our way of conveying information through speech helps humans more easily form bonds with one another, as human communicating allows for a plethora of interaction to occur. Language allows us to express our ideas, emotions, and feelings to others, and likely find comfort in doing so. Language fulfills our natural desire of another person to speak out to. Thus, a lack of language means the absence of close relationships amongst humans and a vivid presence of pure …show more content…
Collective learning entices the act of pooling information together in order to build off of what others discovered in their lifetimes. It’s an easy way to pass around vital information, and where there’s a need to exchange such information, efficient forms of communication, like our language, thrive. A case study by Asad Amin and Muhammad Imran Shahid entitled, “Influence of Language on Knowledge Sharing” describes how knowledge in organization is best distributed through interaction, collaboration, and education. Human language, which fuels all of these “distribution methods,” can allow pools of knowledge created by collective learning to be more effectively brought to the minds of people. Human language allows for a more effective way of spreading information pooled by countless individuals over the course of their

...his article is about the academic discipline. For a general history of human beings, see History of the world. For other uses, see History (disambiguation). Page semi-protected Historia by Nikolaos Gysis (1892) Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.[1] —George Santayana History (from Greek ἱστορία - historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation"[2]) is the discovery, collection, organization, and presentation of information about past events. History can also mean the period of time after writing was invented. Scholars who write about history are called historians. It is a field of research which uses a narrative to examine and analyse the sequence of events, and it sometimes attempts to investigate objectively the patterns of cause and effect that determine events.[3][4] Historians debate the nature of history and its usefulness. This includes discussing the study of the discipline as an end in itself and as a way of providing "perspective" on the problems of the present.[3][5][6][7] The stories common to a particular culture, but not supported by external sources (such as the legends surrounding King Arthur) are usually classified as cultural heritage rather than the "disinterested investigation" needed by the discipline of history.[8][9] Events of the past prior to written record are considered prehistory. Amongst scholars, the 5th-century BC Greek historian Herodotus is considered to be the "father of history", and, along...

The last generation to be intellectually alone. The last generation to be limited by our bodies. We are the first. The first generation to be augmented. The first generation to be intellectually together. The first generation to be limited only by our imaginations. We stand both before and after, balancing on the razor edge of the Event Horizon of the Singularity. That this sublime juxtapositional tautology has gone unnoticed until now is itself remarkable. We're so exquisitely privileged to be living in this time, to be born right on the precipice of the greatest paradigm shift in human history, the only thing that approaches the importance of that reality is finding like minds that realize the same, and being able to make some connection with them. ...B L A C K SWAN The HIGHLY I mpact IM of the PROBABLE Nassim Nicholas Taleb U.S.A. $26.95 Canada $34.95 is a highly improbable event with three principal characteristics: It is unpre dictable; it carries a massive impact; and, after the fact, we concoct an explanation that makes it appear less random, and more predictable, than it was. The astonishing success of Google was a black swan; so was 9 / 1 1 . For Nassim Nicholas Taleb, black swans underlie almost everything about our world, from the rise of religions to events in our own personal lives. A BLACK SWAN Why do we not acknowledge the phenomenon of black swans until after they occur? Part of the answer, according to Taleb, is that humans are hardwired to learn specifics when they should be focused on generalities. We concentrate on things we already know and time and time again fail to take into consideration what we don't know. We are, therefore, unable to truly estimate oppor tunities, too vulnerable to the impulse to simplify, narrate, and categorize, and not open enough to rewarding those who can imagine the "impossible." For years, Taleb has studied how we fool our selves into thinking we know more than we actually do. We restrict our thinking to the irrelevant and inconsequential, while large events continue to surprise us and shape our world. Now, in this reve latory book, Taleb explains everything we know about what we don't know. He offers surprisingly ...
