“Tommy, just tell your mom you’re staying the night at my house!”
“Are you kidding me? She knows your dad works crazy hours. She’d never go for that in a million years! Besides, you live in town. How do you expect to get to the woods, Hitchhike?”
“Maybe, you afraid?”
“No, but I ain’t stupid either. Look, my mom said we could camp in the backyard, so let’s camp in the backyard.”
“That kind of defeats the point, doesn’t it? We’re planning an expedition into the mountains, and we can’t do that from the backyard!” “No, but mom and dad have to go to sleep sometime, and when they do we hit the woods. After all, we live on the edge of the mountain range!”

I don’t think either one of us were willing to admit it at the time, but the thought of actually coming into contact with a Bigfoot was a little more than frightening. The only weapons we had at our disposal were David’s Swiss army knife and my Red rider BB gun. If there was a Bigfoot in those mountains, I wasn’t too sure I wanted to meet him. Either way, we were closing in on the point of no return, and neither one of us wanted to be branded a chicken.

On one hand the odds of us actually finding a Bigfoot were minuscule at best, and I took some comfort in that because we had absolutely no idea what to do if we did. But on the other hand, the excitement of the unknown was a little more than palpable. I figured if we stuck to our plan of heading due north t would be simple enough to just turn back south and head home…… straight in and straight out! It was so simple it couldn’t possibly go wrong, at least that is what I kept telling myself! We all know, however, that life doesn’t always cooperate, and no matter how well you may have planned your escape route, sometimes things just don’t work out. But we were thirteen; what did we know about life anyway? David was the first to break the

Generally, those journalists do a competent job of reporting on the prospect’s record. In the case of Governor George W. Bush, Texas reporters had written numerous stories about his failed businesses in the oil patch, the dubious land grab and questionable funding behind a new stadium for Bush’s baseball team, the Texas Rangers, and his various political contradictions and hypocrisies while serving in Austin. I was one of those Texas journalists. I spent about a decade...
