Through its evolutionary stages, from the humble beginnings of MSN Search to the revamped Bing, Microsoft have been preparing for their default engine to generate a larger share search engine oligopoly – one in which Google holds an overwhelming power in. Ultimately, Bing failed because of a wide variety of reasons, most notable of which had to do with the brand loyalty and association people had with Google and the lack of trust as well as the negative image that Bing had generated through its head-on collision with Google in the ‘Bing It On’ campaign where they made constant comparisons to the search giant in an attempt to portray Google’s lack of proficiency; and the emergence of news about them copying Google’s search results (Singel, 2011). Brand loyalty is very much based on the establishment of trust consumers have for the particular brand (Sirchuk, 2012) and companies like Google target this aspect by aiming to become a “brand for life” (Oneto, 2013). They (Google) allowed consumers to see how the brand could play a part in every stage of a person’s life and this in particular is crucial especially...

...but Bing, Microsoft search engine, is another option. Microsoft has always been tried to take market share from Google. In the article “You are previewing premium content. Become an Insider to read the full article. Google: Bing Is Cheating, Copying Our Search Results”, Danny Sullivan (2011) examined how Google's search engine team set up its own “sting operation” in December to show that Microsoft's Bing is copying some of Google's search results. Amit Singhal, the head of Google's core ranking team, wondered that whether Bing copy the search results from Google or not. Therefore, Google has managed a team investigation for the implementation of sting operation by using a fraudulent website (which does not have in Google and Bing data storage), and using weird keyword such as hiybbprqag to do the experiment. Google use 20 engineers who were using the Google.com search through the Internet Explorer browser to install and launch Bing Toolbar, and open Suggested Sites feature. After Google has stored pages (indexing), they tried to search with Bing and showed the exactly the same page, and in the top even though the keyword “hiybbprgag” does not mean anything. From this event, Stefan Weitz (Director of Microsoft's Bing search engine) argued that we use several methods to organize rank websites, but we will not discuss in deeper details as well as other competitors in this market, we tried to find the best and most accurate search queries such as opt-in program from Bing Toolbar...

...SOS 110 Written Assignment 2 The internet offers data and information from around the world. It is use in so many different ways from entertainment, shopping, school to work researches. In using the internet, one normally starts by performing a search using their favorite search engine like Bing, Google or Yahoo. The results of these site engines can be great or not so great, depending what the person is looking for. And then there are databases which not a lot of people use or aware of. A database is an organized list of facts and information also available through the internet. Both search engines and databases are accessed through the internet but produce different types of result for the same topic. I started by my search by using Bing as my preferred search engine and EBSCO provided by the school as my database. I used the topic “articles on privacy and security on the internet” for my internet search. I used “Evaluating Web Pages: Techniques to Apply and Questions to Ask” from Berkley for an evaluation guide. The number one result for Bing was www.ftc.gov; I think the results are based on popularity and the number of “hits” the website generate. Underneath the link you can find an unfinished description of what the site is all about. Using the evaluation guide, this site did not do well. Upon clicking on the link, it brought me to a page that has a microsite containing three different links. When I clicked on the first link, there were no article...

...“I wish developing great products was as easy as writing a check. If that was the case, Microsoft would have great products.” Steve Jobs, Cnet News. May 10, 2007 1. Patterns in Microsoft’s response to competitive threats and opportunities Standardization and simplification, complementary products, aggressive market penetration strategies (tenacity, deep investments and bundling), aggressive deal making. If I were to quote Microsoft’s best and most genius strategy that allowed them to gain impressive market share and become virtually impregnable in OS and application software market, it would be standardization (=compatibility) and simplification. They made their products easy to use, switch between and upgrade, which saved their clients a good amount of money in training and re-training employees, equipping new sites, etc. They looked past minor competitive losses in favor of bigger gains that would allow them to ultimately win market share, as in the example when they made their Office package available on Mac OS while Lotus and WordPerfect were hesitant to do so, even though Apple had many products competitive to Microsoft offerings. Another winning strategy was to produce complementary products: OS and applications that were perfectly compatible, as well as making these products available for different PCs and operating systems (=Apple) thus making Microsoft products ubiquitous and omnipresent. Impressive profits and large cash account further allowed Microsoft to...

The main objective of public debt management is to ensure that the government’s financing needs and its payment obligations are met at the lowest possible cost over the medium to long run, consistent with a prudent degree of risk. The risk inherent in the structure of the government’s debt should be carefully monitored and evaluated. In order to help guide borrowing decisions and reduce the government’s risk, debt managers should consider the financial and other risk characteristics of the government’s cash flows. ...almost certainly come up with some terrific new ideas (for free). 2. There are several factors that are causing Google to move slowly in terms of opening their databases. There can always be unforeseen consequences if they opened up too quickly, it may be too difficult to address these problem. By opening slowly Google is giving itself enough time to adjust. Whereas Amazon or eBay profit from selling goods and services online, Google’s success is based on their proprietary search engine technology. It’s similar to a chef’s secret ingredient. If that ingredient gets out then you loose you advantage since everyone can replicate your signature dish. Google is generally considered the most popular and accurate search engine. What is to stop Bing or Yahoo from replicated their search engine technology? 3. Not all companies should open up their databases. The most suitable companies are large companies. If I run a small company that sells car stereos and decide to open up by database then my competition may decide to under cut me on every product. Only companies that are big enough to comfortably take a hit from...

...due to the large scale of information and infrastructure already acquired by the biggest companies. Rivalry between Established Competitors: Medium * Currently the four biggest search engines are Google, Microsoft’s Bing, Yahoo, and AOL. However, Google has the largest piece of the market and seems to be ahead of the others with Bing being on the rise and the rest three very close to each other. Smaller ones such as Altavista, Lycos and Excite do not seem to pose a direct threat to any of the biggest four. Bargaining Power of Buyers: Low * Advertisers recognize that the biggest providers together concentrate the largest number of searches, around 95% of the total. Therefore there is no room for negotiating advertisement prices. Also, even if a few users change search engine, it is unlikely to have any effect. Bargaining power of Suppliers: Low * The essence behind the search engines is their computer infrastructure. The biggest companies have such wealth that they can keep acquiring as much infrastructure as they want. The search engines will work around the trend history and will display a column with search results on a side from last few hours, days or weeks. Further, it is expected that search engine home page will be customized based upon the result of most frequent search keywords. There would be enhanced and strict rules and laws in regards to search performed on search engines. Also, there...

...SN Search MSN Search homepage in 2006 Windows Live Search homepage Live Search homepage, which would help to create the Bing homepage later on. MSN Search was a search engine by Microsoft that consisted of a search engine, index, and web crawler. MSN Search first launched in the third quarter of 1998 and used search results from Inktomi. In early 1999, MSN Search launched a version which displayed listings from Looksmart blended with results from Inktomi except for a short time in 1999 when results from AltaVista were used instead. Since then Microsoft upgraded MSN Search to provide its own self-built search engine results, the index of which was updated weekly and sometimes daily. The upgrade started as a beta program in November 2004, and came out of beta in February 2005. Image search was powered by a third party, Picsearch. The service also started providing its search results to other search engine portals in an effort to better compete in the market. Windows Live Search The first public beta of Windows Live Search was unveiled on March 8, 2006, with the final release on September 11, 2006 replacing MSN Search. The new search engine used search tabs that include Web, news, images, music, desktop, local, and Microsoft Encarta. In the roll-over from MSN Search to Windows Live Search, Microsoft stopped using Picsearch as their image search provider and started performing their own image search, fueled by their own internal image search algorithms.[12] Live...

...per quarter. The deal terms between Microsoft and Yahoo mean that the partnership can only be called off if either Microsoft closes or sells Bing, or if Yahoo's revenue per search falls below 40 percent of Google's. * The deal is the next step in the 10-year Microsoft Bing and Yahoo search merger, which was announced in July 2009. Under the plan, Microsoft’s Bing search engine will power Yahoo Search and its ad sales. Microsoft will get 12 percent of revenue from Yahoo searches. In August, the two companies announced that Bing was now powering Yahoo Search. “This will provide advertisers with the benefit of a combined marketplace through a single platform, creating a competitive alternative in search,” said David Pann, general manager of the Microsoft Advertising Search Network. “Rather than managing campaigns on Bing and Yahoo! Separately, advertisers can now reach the combined audience of both search engines by managing a single account, saving time and simplifying campaign management.” But in all honesty, this deal is much more about Yahoo's cost structure, Microsoft's search ambitions, and advertising budgets than the user experience. Microsoft and Yahoo will still continue to provide unique user search experiences on their respective sites; the only difference is that the list of results for queries on Yahoo and Bing will be identical. Şirketin yaklaşık 15 ay önce Yahoo'ya sunduğu 47,5...

...Webster defines monopoly as “exclusive ownership through legal privilege, command of supply, or concerted action.” In the news lately, stories of the big bad monopolies abound. We constantly hear of government regulation in software, utilities, transportation, and financial institutions. The justice department closely scrutinizes mergers and acquisitions so that firms don't end up with too much market power. However, pure monopolies are very rare. Even the threat of serious competition entering the market forces the existing firm to act conscionably, and differently from how it would act otherwise. Recently, the internet search giant Google was under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission on suspicion of violating antitrust legislation. In 2011, Yelp Inc. filed a complaint that Google was using excerpts from other websites in their search results. Even though Google agreed to exclude other company’s “snippets” upon request, this complaint launched the investigation by the FTC. Other companies, including Microsoft, complained that Google highlights its own services first on the results page. The FTC found that even though “Google took aggressive actions to gain advantage over rival search providers… the FTC's mission is to protect competition, and not individual competitors.” The only concerns the FTC seemed to have with Google were the patents they acquired in their purchase on Motorola Mobility in 2012. Google agreed “to a consent decree that will require the company...
