Integrated regulations and laws, particularly in regards to speed limits and blood alcohol concentration, will aid in reducing behavioural determinants, such as risk taking, on the roads. Risk taking behaviours are major contributors to road accident mortalities and injuries; speeding and alcohol consumption are the two main risk behaviours that contribute to motor vehicle accidents (3, 6). Other factors the increase risk and frequency of road traffic accidents include speeding, not wearing helmets while riding a motorcycle, not wearing seatbelts, drugs and physical health (1, 5, 7). The consumption of alcohol can increase the risk of a fatality as the result of a car accident by up to 90 more times and if a drivers blood alcohol level is above …show more content…
Age and sex are the main biological determinants that impact road accidents, with young males identified as most at risk group for being involved in a car crash. Just less than half of the worldwide fatalities are the result of motor vehicle accidents of individuals aged between 15 and 44 years old (2). Young males in comparison to young females have a higher chance of being involved in a car accident, with more than 80% of general road accidents involving young males (2, 10). Young men are also involved in more road traffic mortalities than females, with males aged younger than 25 having 3 times the risk of being killed in accident and approximately 73% of road accident mortalities are male (2). There are correlations between risk taking behaviours and age, approximately 84% of car accidents involving drivers with a blood alcohol concentration more than 0.01 are drivers aged 15 to 24 and 42% of young drivers who had a blood alcohol concentration more than 0.01 tested positive for drugs (5). Studies found that individuals aged 15-29 had the highest fatality rates out of drivers, passengers, pedestrians, motorcyclists and bicyclist, out of the total 1,953 fatalities, 804 involved individuals aged 15-29, the other age groups (less than 14, 30-44, 45-59 and above 60 years old) all displayed similar fatality rates. Hospitalisation data showed similar trend results to fatalities, with 9,575 of the 21,602 hospitalisations involving individuals aged 15-29 (4).
