...June 15,2014 Birth Control Pros and Cons The controversy revolving around birth control has been an ongoing and long debated topic, bringing strong convictions from both sides of the debate. When starting the research for this paper, I found many statistics to support both sides and many opinions based on religious beliefs, moral views and personal convictions. For: 1) The world population is growing at a rapid speed and while America may not yet feel the impact of the earth’s overpopulation, many other countries are losing resources and lack basic needs (Gonsalves, J 2005). The world is now home to seven billion people. Not only would birth control help to slow the population growth rate, but it can also help to prevent the high rate for infant deaths (Miller et al 2012). Less than 5 percent of people in most countries in Africa use contraceptives (Rengel, M 2000). If this number was higher and more people were aware of the benefits of birth control, and it was accessible to them, it would help everyone and the planet overall (Rengel, M 2000). 2) It is only reasonable to accept that birth control is not merely a matter of morals, but also of ethics (Steinbock, B 2011). It may be immoral to prevent conception, but it is unethical to willingly allow ourselves to cause unwanted pregnancies that will result in more destitution. 3) As a counterpoint to the second anti-birth control argument, developing a market for contraceptives may in fact reduce the number of women...

...Birth Control Throughout history, the idea of whether birth control should be used has been a hot topic. Some believed it was harmful to the body while others thought it saved lives. Margaret Sanger, a woman who stood up for women’s rights, fought for birth control. She believed she could make a difference in the world and did what she could to accomplish it. Many people strongly believe that women should be able to have control over their own body. No one should be forced to do something with their body that they don’t agree with. They should stand up for what they believe in ordinarily stop being scared by societal norms. “Victoria Woodhull was perhaps one of the first people to preach the importance of ‘no means no’. No one – not your husband, boyfriend, or date – has the right to act against your wishes” ("10 Victoria...

...The sponge is made of foam that is inserted into the vaginal area to help prevent pregnancy. It is safe and convenient but it is said that it is not effective. It is a very easy form of birth control to use. It costs about $15 dollars to get through your doctor. The sponge helps block sperm from getting to the uterus. (“Birth Control Sponge”) With the sponge form of birth control it will really need your parents consent because this form is not really effective. This form of birth control is just a sponge that you can get with a prescription so the doctor will have all these questions and these technical terms that no teenager will understand so like what was said earlier you will have to have your parent their to help you understand everything that the doctor is telling...

...Today, American women use multiple different types of birth control methods. In 2011, forty-five percent of pregnancies were unintended ("Unintended Pregnancy"). In other words, that is almost half of all pregnancies. These unintended pregnancies are a huge reason as to why many women make the decision to use birth control. Some of the most common types of birth control (birth control pills, intrauterine devices, abstinence, and tubal ligation) are methods prescribed or suggested by a woman's health care provider. Each birth control method has a negative side effect but they all assist in preventing pregnancy and offer other health benefits as well (SP3). For example, birth control pills may cause heart attacks, but they also help prevent pregnancy and acne ("The Pill"). Although birth control can have negative side effects, it has health benefits that outweigh the risks....

...Should parents provide their teens with birth control? Pros Helps decrease the amount of teen pregnancies each year in the United States. Access to birth control can help decrease the abortion rate in the United States. Allowing birth control displays a level of responsibility for your teen (Demand Media, Inc., 1999-2012). Cuts the risk of ovarian and uterine cancer by half (Demand Media, Inc., 1999-2012). The most popular method of contraception among teens is the birth control pill (Demand Media, Inc., 1999-2012). Free birth control allows teens who may not have been able to afford it to access it, this may not always be because a teen wants to be sexually active it could also help control their menstrual cycle especially if a doctor has prescribed it but they could not afford it (Word Press, 2011). If this whole process is done right and communicated well when talking about birth control or sex, it could lead to more sexually educated kids, which is never a bad thing because they will then know enough to make safer sexual decisions (Word Press, 2011). Cons The teen’s parents typically end up taking responsibly for the baby (Demand Media, Inc., 1999-2012). The teen may feel supported in the quest for sexual freedom if allowed birth control (Demand Media, Inc., 1999-2012). Birth control does not prevent STD’s and only prevents against pregnancy. STD’s can still...

...Birth control pills can be up to 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy, according to the American Pregnancy Association. Despite this and other advantages of using the pill, many women still worry about the potential risks of using it as birth control. While it is true that the pill has been improved and refined throughout the years to minimize these risks, there are still potential drawbacks in using this medication. Women who are considering using the birth control pill should carefully weigh the pros and cons before using it. Types Many types of birth control pills are available. Monophasic birth control pills contain active pills with equal amounts of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. This type of pill may cause fewer mood changes, according to Drugs.com. Multiphasic birth control pills will contain varying amounts of hormones based upon the cycle date the pill will be taken. Since this mimics a woman's natural menstrual cycle, it may prevent unwelcome physical side effects. Progesterone-only pills only contain the hormone progesterone, which makes them a good option for those that can not take estrogren. Finally, extended-cycle birth control pills are taken for a longer period and eliminate the need for monthly menstruation. Yaz Birth Control News October 2012 Update. Free legal consultation. ..."Birth Assessment" Throughout history there have been many ways medical and non-medical people have modified and enhanced the effectiveness of child birth. Some have made the experience more positive while others have caused physical and emotional harm to women. There are different ways that women can give birth: natural, cesarean, and hypno-birthing. Of these ways women can deliver I feel some of the most important aspects are in the advancement of men in the delivery room. It is wonderful to see the great accomplishments and improvements our culture has made through the years. In many years before men were not allowed to witness the birth of their child because it was considered inappropriate. Now men are allowed to be there in the room and most men chose to be there in the room to support their partner and witness the birth of their child. When a woman gives birth without the help of surgical or medical helped it is called natural childbirth. Many women chose to give birth this way and they do this to feel more in tune or at ease with the natural way. Just because a woman may give birth naturally it does not necessarily mean that they are not in a hospital or under the supervision of a medical professional. Any woman that chooses to go the natural childbirth route can choose where they give birth and what doctor they choose to be there for the event. Another positive is that a natural childbirth can allow the mother to be in control of every aspect of the labor and...

...January 15th 2012 Com/220 Argumentation assignment The speech I chose to read instead of hear was “The morality of birth control” by Margaret Sanger (1921). I chose this speech because I have worked in the healthcare field for over 10 years now, this subject truly catches my attention. Its also the reason why for my final project I have chosen to speak about abortion and pro choice debates. After reading the article I picked up on bias’ right of the bat. The fact that women have been viewed as immoral for wanting to control the size of their families or to act as responsible adults. Margaret talks about how many different groups were invited to the conference that was held and everyone acted with dignity except one group. This group was the religious “church” going individuals. This group views birth control as a “sin” so to speak and think it’s against gods will. I can vouch for this personally. I recently took a new job almost three months ago with a very well known catholic organization. We have amazing benefits except they will not cover ANY form of contraception or fertility treatment. This means I have to pay out of pocket for my prescriptions of birth control. A choice I have chosen as a single/divorced mother of three. I don’t want to have any more children, but in their eyes I am being immoral. To me some of the fallacies or misconceptions with this issue that they are basically stating that religion and worship make a person moral. How can that be when...

...Abortion When I was growing up, my mother told me the truth that many years ago she wouldn’t give birth to me if she had made her decision. My family back then was not very poor, but my parents already had my older brother and sister. In the late of 1980s, the government in my country advised that every family should only have two children. Parents who had the third child would be fined with higher taxes. Therefore, my father suggested that she should have an abortion because my family couldn’t afford the fine. My life at that time was in great danger. It all depended on my mother’s decision. And she decided to keep me. Abortion has been an intensely debated issue in the United States today. It is very difficult to find someone who doesn't have an opinion about abortion, and probably a strong opinion at that. There are usually two sides of every issue: the pros and cons. There are many opinions on this topic, however, a good place to start is whether or not law has the authority to rule over morality and whether the laws that we have now bring enough attention to the moral value of abortion. Along with these concepts abortion can also be viewed through the eyes of the utilitarian approach to ethics which focuses on both pleasure and pain and the ability to maximize pleasure over pain. On the other hand, Libertarian considers abortion issue is a necessary thing when we need to protect human freedom. A fundamental utilitarian makes a judgment according to how much general well...

...Current birth control methods: There are three kinds of basic methods that are popular recently. However there is no "best" method of birth control. Each method has its pros and cons. The first one called Barrier methods which are female and male condom. Female condom is a thin protective layer worn by a woman during sex. It entirely lines the vagina and helps to prevent pregnancy. (Birth control methods fact sheet, 2011) However the problem is that it would cause some side effects like irritation and allergic reactions. (Snowdon, 2009) To compare, male condom has lower risks of side effects and also it is the only birth control method proven to help protect from Sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. (Birth control methods fact sheet, 2011) The second one called Hormonal methods. Oral contraceptives — combined pill and progestin-only pill are belong to hormonal methods. However the side effects of those pills are including but not limited to dizziness, upset stomach and changes in your period. (Birth control methods fact sheet, 2011) Also, vaginal ring is another way of birth control on hormonal methods. (Snowdon, 2009) The last one is called Permanent birth control methods which include sterilization implant and surgical sterilization. (Birth control methods fact sheet, 2011) The advantage of sterilization is that is has really low pregnancy rate (less than 1 pregnancy expected per 100 women). (Birth control methods fact sheet, 2011) However the side effects...

You may use your book, notes, and PowerPoints. You may NOT work together. All exams are due Monday, March 4th by 5 pm. We will NOT have class that night. 1. Discuss the history of sex over the past 400 years. Have people always been uptight about sexual activity? What took place that changed attitudes regarding sexuality? Discuss devices used in Medieval times to prevent sexual activity. Do you think that suck devices could be used today? 2. Which method do sexuality researchers most often use to collect data? Name three (3) benefits and three (3) issues with this method of data collection. If you were a sexuality researcher, and you did not want to use the previously mentioned method, which would you use? What are the two (2) benefits and (2) issues with using your technique? **The most common methods used are surveys. Benefits of surveys are that they are less expensive than interviews, they are more convenient in a way that it makes people feel more relaxed, it reinforces anonymity, and you can do them on your own time, whenever you please. Some issues this method has are that self-report data can cause difficulties in recalling past events, embellishment, and not an accurate return rate. If I did not use surveys as a method, I would probably chose case studies. Benefits...

...PROS AND CONS OF ABORTION ABORTION- it could be defined as ending a pregnancy early. There are two methods for abortion; one by taking pills i.e. medical abortion, the other is done by surgery i.e. surgical abortion. The reasons for abortion vary between the rights of choice to the rights of life. It’s a choice made when either or both partners decide not to have the conceived child. There are many arguments faced when making such a choice. The decision is challenged on the grounds of both moral and ethical. Abortion has always been a heated subject in a society, as every individual has their own school of thoughts regarding this matter. There are many perspectives through which we can argue the grounds of going for an abortion. The debate on this is divided into two groups, on that is a pro-life group claiming that a life starts at the point of conceiving, therefore abortion is literally murder. Then there is the other group fighting for the right of choice in this matter known as pro-choice group. They both are at opposite poles with their arguments. People supporting pro-choice work towards creating legal options for abortion. They work to make laws that allow people to choose under given circumstances whether they want to go for abortion or not. They are to some extant justified in supporting this perspective. In some cases, the pregnancy is too complicated or dire for the mother to give birth that it becomes absolutely necessary to go for such options. Sometimes there...

...Marie Quinones BSC2085 Unit 5 Report Professor Hilbelink 4-22-15 Unit 5 Report In this scenario Maria utilizes the rhythm method as her preferred method of birth control. Some pros of the rhythm method is there is no prescription so it is something that couples always have access to. Another pro is it is natural, therefore a person doesn’t have to take hormones. A con is that the lifespan of sperm may make it nearly impossible to exactly know when it’s safe to have sex. Another con is that a woman’s menstrual cycle is different and may change so it would be rather difficult to know when a woman is fertile. Last is the risk of STD’S, the rhythm method does not provide any protection. Maria should be twelve weeks into her pregnancy because she has missed two consecutive periods. On average, woman get their period every four weeks, so eight weeks later without her period plus you cannot find out you are pregnant until four weeks after. To put in perspective, conception does not even occur until two weeks after pregnancy, therefore Maria is twelve weeks into her pregnancy and she conceived about ten weeks ago. In order to prevent this incident from occurring the couple could have used protection, the woman could have...
