...Birth of My Niece The Birth of my Niece Being able to be in the delivery room while my sister was in labor was an amazing experience. When my sister found out she was pregnant we were all upset. She was only 17 at the time and I still couldn’t believe it. I was very disappointed in her because I thought she knew better. There was not much I could do but support her. She needed my support as well as my family’s support. I just kept telling myself this all happened for a reason, and a baby is a blessing. As each day went by I became more and more excited. The disappointment was gone, and all that was left was happiness and excitement. My family and I were really curious and excited to find out what my sister was going to have. My dad was hoping for a boy because there were no boys in the house besides himself and my grandpa. The rest of us were hoping for a girl. As the day quickly approached for when she finds out what she is having, we all became happy and nervous. That day my mom had went with my sister to her doctor’s appointment, and shortly after I received a text saying, “It’s a Girl!!!” Her due date was October 28, 2011. Words could not explain how happy I was, and that same day I started shopping for my niece. As my sister was just about done with her first trimester she could finally hold food down. She couldn’t even hold a smoothie from Jamba Juice down. It was a rough time for her. I felt bad because every time I would be eating she would want to eat, but she knew...

...Risks Although getting pregnant can be a big risk to health, it is one risk that almost always pays off in the end. Getting pregnant and giving birth is a risk many women have taken for centuries because in the end it creates the most beautiful thing imaginable, life. There have been many occasions where women in my family have had life threatening risks while pregnant but luckily they had good doctors to keep things under control and they were able to give birth to their little miracles. When falling pregnant, although short, there is always a list of health risks that can affect not only the mother but the baby as well. For example, when my sister, Ina fell pregnant with her daughter, she went in to have a sonogram and the doctors told her that her daughter’s heart was too large and her daughter would die immediately after giving birth. Multiple doctors informed my sister not to buy anything for her daughter or have a baby shower because she would most likely be planning a funeral instead. Instead of taking the doctor’s advice, Ina went on with her pregnancy as though everything was normal; she kept a positive attitude and refused to believe that was the end of it. On February, 24, 2007 I was there to witness her give birth to a beautiful healthy baby girl weighing 6lbs, 2oz. Today my niece she is 6 years old and healthy and happy as can be. Usually when doctors make a suggestion on what to do while pregnant, people will do as they suggest. Although it isn’t very likely...

...In my opinion child development is the nature-nurture debate because the material that child development focuses on is how a child thinks and acts all the way until the end of adolescences. Meaning they want to know if what a kid do or does is something they were learn/taught or was it natural to them because their parents used to do the same thing when they were a kid. Birth deficits can you say is hereditary because some defects are solely based on the genetics. Moreover, if a woman during pregnancy drinks and smokes she then becomes the cause of the defects that the baby can potential have during birth. Other factors that are genetic is the mutation in a single gene can cause a range of disorders. For example, sickle cell, cystic fibrosis, and polycystic kidney. Most people use the common phase “it runs in my family” which how they may have confused nature and nurture. Nature deals with the genetics not how they think and act. Watching my nieces develop showed me that they just picked up everything that they heard and saw and just imitated the behavior. For instance, before my niece turned one she will always watch the kid videos that her cousins were watching and eventually started trying to do the dance and sing along with...

...The subsection The Nativist Perspective from chapter 6 helps me understand the aspect of language development. Noam Chomsky’s believed that language is one of the biggest accomplishments for human beings. The structures of language are too complex to be taught to children instead Chomsky believed that everyone has a language acquisition device (LAD). LAD is an innate system that contains universal grammar, or set of rules common to all languages. It helps children to identify their native language and speak it as soon as they pick up enough words (Berk & Meyers, 2016). At birth the cerebral cortex in the brain is not fully lateral to acquire language sounds. As babies grow they are capable to distinguish speech sounds and have the ability...

...Winter 2011 Dear Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, Hello again, its been six months since my last letter and through that time a lot of new things happened to me. I have finished my second year, successfully if I may add, and went out to semester vacation, which unfortunately ended two weeks ago. During the summer I spent time working at the coffee place near my house, and spent a lot of time with my family do to the fact that my older sister gave birth to my beautiful niece. They've named her Evellin, and she's almost one month old. I've tried to help my sister as much as I could towards the birth by taking care of my 3years old nephew. After Evellin's birth, I'm spending most of my time with them. The third year is filled with new and interesting courses, which involve less math and more theoretic knowledge. Finally we're beginning to learn more about of major, and from it looks I'm about to have a pretty interesting career. It was very fun to see everyone from my class again, I really love the people who study with me. we've created a very cohesive group. At Rosh Hshana we began our volunteer project from "LATET" at the super market, collecting food for the needy families. The project went very well, and continued for a week and a half. We were able to break our own record with the number of mills we collected. I would like to wish you a great year; followed with joy and happiness. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to...

...My greatest obstacle is one I almost never discuss. I suffer from infertility, and my obstacle is a direct result. My husband and I have been trying to have a family since we married twelve years ago. In 2009, I underwent in vitro-fertalization and got pregnant. Consequently, we started out with triplets. Finding out early on that one embryo was not developing at the rate of the other two, and that we would most likely lose it, we prepared ourselves for that loss. However, we were woefully unprepared for my going into labor just shy of twenty weeks. The doctors never figured out what went wrong, but the loss of our son and daughter was the hardest thing I have ever had to deal with; my obstacle. I had to give birth to my babies knowing full...

...nature vs. nurture debate. The nature vs. nurture debate raises the question about whether human development is mostly based on behaviors which are inherited or those which originated from environmental influences. My sister’s two children, Taylor and Abigail are biological siblings who inherited their green eyes from their mother and their straight teeth from their father, but that is where their similarities end. The siblings are so unalike in looks and personality that at times it is hard to believe they are even related, biologically or otherwise. My niece resembles her mother: light complexion, petite, dimples in her cheeks, and long hair. While my nephew looks a lot like his dad: dark complexion, light brown hair, tall, stout and broad shoulders like his paternal grandfather. Patrick is very friendly and outgoing like his mother, while Abigail is shy and reserved like her dad. Patrick, who likes to dance loves being the center of attention and whenever he enters a room all attention, must be on him. In contrast, you’ll hardly notice Abigail is in the very same room and she is quite content with that. “Slugs and snails and puppy-dogs' tails, that’s what little boys are made of?” I beg to differ. Abigail likes riding the lawnmower whenever my brother-in-law decides to mow the lawn. She shies away from shopping malls preferring to accompany her father and his buddies on fishing and hunting trips and she can play baseball better than any boy I know. I can recall...

...Over spring break, my nieces and nephews were all over to my parents house. My nephews, Cashton and Tucker, 6 and a half and 5 respectively, were playing this game on our computer that was like SIMS for kids. You chose your outfit, backpack, hairstyle, and even the type of your classroom you’re in when you go to school. Much to my surprise, when you choose your teacher, you’re only given female options. How could a game be created for children under the age of 8 in mind that already marginalizes boys and girls in this way? I first thought of my niece Julia, only 2 and a half, sitting near them but not paying attention. I shuddered in anger thinking of all the images like this that will try to put her in a box. The constant stream of images from the media that will try to belittle her, and convince her that she should look and behave in a very narrow and specific way. Then I thought of my boys. Seeing those...

...1) Sensorimotor Stage This is the stage in which infants construct an understanding of the world by coordinating sensory experiences. From birth to 1 month, the infant develops coordination of sensation and action through reflexive behaviors. An example of this progress is rooting, sucking and grasping reflexes as newborns usually suck reflexively when their lips are touched. From 1 to 4 months, infants discover the body through testing reflexes and adapting the reflexes to the environment. For instance, three-month-old niece mistakenly tapped her forehead and she immediately tried to repeat it although the second time was not as the first time. From 4 to 8 months, infants become more object-oriented and move beyond self-preoccupation and they usually repeat actions that convey interesting or enjoyable results. For instance, an infant babble to make a person stay near and if the infant notices the person leaving then they babble again since he/she knows that it makes the person to stay near. From 8 to 12 months, infants begin to have coordination of vision and touch and during this progress, infants combine and recombine previously learned schemes in a coordinated way. For example, infants...

...example from the Crucible is anger, Abigail was angry of being accused of witchcraft so she accused others. However, there are a lot more examples of fear in the play, I will be talking about these main three. In The Crucible, there is a variety of fear. For example, Reverend Parris is afraid of losing his reputation, even if not everyone likes him. Abigail, Rev. Parris’s niece, is scared that her and Mr. Proctor’s affer will be discovered so, she acts out in anger. Also, Mrs. Putnam is scared of her daughter, Ruth, being possessed which, she claims is also happening to Beth and that only the Devil is to blame. In the case of Abigail, when she is afraid, she gets angry and does her best to ruin whoever comes across her path. For example, at the trail when Mary Williams says that Abigail is faking all of it and so is the girls who were dancing in the woods were pretending and it was “for sport” and to make a scene, all the girls ,including Abby, were acting as if Mary had sent...

After that ordeal, Leonato tells Claudio that he should tell everyone in the city how faithful Hero is. He also wants Claudio to marry his “niece” which turns out to be Hero herself [2]. His sonnets were just as thrilling and wonderful as his plays. Shakespeare never had a title for his sonnets, so researchers have named them to when they...

...asterisk require completion (*). Life Event 1 (title):* My Fathers’ Baptism In one paragraph, explain why this event was significant to you.*This is a story that my father who came from a background of hate and racism told me. While my grandparents raised him to hate someone that wasn’t his race he found true friendship with a friend (Robert who was black) through his job. They remained close throughout their friendship until he died from cancer and my dad made a promise to take care of his family. After a few years my dad and Robert’s widow (Laura) my mom fell in love and had two girls me and my sister Amber. We all became a family after my parents married. The significance of this to me is that now I understand why we were raised to love all people and not to discriminate because it’s cruel and hateful and as my dad says “its just plain wrong” and it has helped me to become an open-minded and a non-judgmental woman. In a second paragraph, describe how you felt after the experience. *What I experienced in that moment of learning everything that I was pretty sure was difficult for him was a feeling of complete understanding and appreciation. I grew up saying that I hated someone because of little things that were insignificant and not understanding the word and how much power it held. I went through a period of denial after learning that. To this day I have never met any of my dads immediate family, but...

...Children in Non-Parental Care Rachel Metzger SOC 312 Rebekah Clark August 29, 2012 Children in Non-Parental Care Non-Parental childcare has become very important to many families and for different reasons. One of the main reasons of course, is simply because the need for two incomes is on the rise so both parents are now working. There are three main types of non-parental care that parent can chose from; a daycare setting which generally sees anywhere from 10-20 in a classroom, an “at home” daycare with a personal provider which is generally much smaller, 5-6 children or someone who comes to their home such as a relative or nanny. “In 2005, 61% of children from birth to age six spent some time in non-parental child care” (Alexander, LaRosa, Bader, & Garfield, 2010, p. 427). All three different child care services have their advantages as well as disadvantages and it is up to the parent(s) to decide what is best for their child. One of the most popular forms of non-parental care would be the traditional daycare setting. Traditional daycare would be in a center where the child (ren) is taken care of with six to twenty other children depending on their age group. Infants have a much smaller teacher to child ratio than the children in the five year old age group. Child care centers must be accredited and meet certain regulations for nutrition, staff qualifications children safety. This type of child care tends to be the most expensive, but for older children can be more...

With Rainbows already a step ahead, in the early 1990’s the legislator started requiring special education services to be available to children as young as the age of 3. As the mandated age requirement grew smaller over the years, Rainbows took the lead and assumed the responsibility of providing services to Sedgwick and Butler counties. They now offer services to children birth to 21 years of age. The leadership demonstrated by their progressive thinking is proof of their mission statement and principles. “Rainbows United, Inc. enhances the lives of children with special needs and their families by bringing together community resources and providing customized services.” They are considered the regional leader, yet continually grateful for the contributions and resources given to them. I was first made aware of Rainbows and their services when I was 12 years old. My...
