...Information Systems and Software Applications Various organization departments exist within a company, including accounting, finance, human resources, marketing, and management. Each organizational department uses information systems in one capacity or another. According to Rainer and Turban (2008), "information resources is a general term that includes all the hardware, software (information systems and applications), data, and networks in an organization ("2.4. Managing Information Resources"). We will look at an applications and systems that can be used within a company for management, accounting, and human resources. A popular application in business management is SAP, which stands for Systems, Applications and Products in Data Processing. Founded by former IBM employees in 1972, SAP is used in many avenues of business management. The original SAP idea was to provide customers the ability to interact with a common database for a comprehensive range of applications ("Searchsap.com", n.d.). SAP allows companies to use one database to run all of their day to day programs and applications. My company has a client who is transitioning to SAP. They will use it to schedule their production, send their shipping needs to my company, and receive their freight invoices and accruals from my company. SAP will enable them to enter their information one time and that information will cascade to all necessary parties. An application in the accounting world is JD Edwards. JD Edwards...

Expansion to more stores occurred and the chain was regarded as leaders in providing value to Australian shoppers (G. J. Coles learned the retail trade working for his father's "Coles Store" business at Wilmot, Tasmania between 1910 and 1913). Coles' interest in food retailing was spurred in 1958 when it acquired 54 John Connell Dickins grocery stores. It then acquired the Beilby's chain in South Australia in 1959 and 265 Matthews Thompson grocery stores in New South Wales in...

...Looking Beyond The Boundaries – A strategy to gain competitive advantage for the Coles Group of Australia By Aruna Kulatunga MGG9352 Management Processes and Systems. Semester 1, 2007 Looking Beyond The Boundaries – A strategy to gain competitive advantage for Coles Group Executive Summary The Coles Group of Australia has allowed its competitive advantage to slip away to rival Woolworth by failing to differentiate its core strategies and by failing to articulate well the strategies that could have been differentiated. In a bid to gain competitive advantage, this report suggests that the Coles Group should look beyond the company boundaries, extending its value chain to suppliers, partners and customers in a seamless manner, employ process like Total Quality Management and Business Process Reengineering in extending the value chain, bedded in a well structured change management programme and look towards globalisation and franchising along with such counter-intuitive, yet innovative, location strategies such as competitive clustering and saturation marketing to regain its competitive advantage. Page 2 23/10/07 Looking Beyond The Boundaries – A strategy to gain competitive advantage for Coles Group Introduction Strategy gurus Porter (1998, p. 2), Mintzberg (1994), Hamel (1998), Hamel and Prahalad, (1994) Champy and Nohria (1996) and Hammer (quoted in Champy and Nohria, (1996)) agree in principle that in order to meet business needs, specific actions need to be...

...Club IT, Part Two Nathaniel Rogers BIS219 October 25, 2010 Alanzo White Club IT, Part Two In response to Ruben and Lisa’s request for a full analysis of Club IT’s information needs (Club IT, Part One), over the past few months, I have observed the overall progress and potential of Club IT and have concluded that it has the potential to become one of the most progressive entertainment venues in Newtown. Club IT currently possesses an adequate platform on which to build a state-of-the-art information system that can propel the club into the stratosphere. With some attention directed toward a few strategic areas and a focus on Information Technology (IT), Club IT can become the entertainment topic of discussion. I will discuss these areas in more detail in this paper and make recommendations on certain systems to implement that will provide the tools necessary to position Club IT to reach its full potential. First, allow me to identify three problem areas that deserve considerable attention: (1) customer relations, (2) sales and marketing, and (3) supply chain management. Concerning customer relations, Club IT needs to do more to establish a rapport with current and potential customers outside the physical confines of the club. It is an established fact that many of Club IT’s patrons use some form of electronic or mobile communications device like Blackberry’s, PDA’s, and camera phones (Club IT Part Two). Club IT must capitalize on this widespread opportunity to...

...Amazon.com Evolution Paper Shelton V. Irvin, Denise Kuzara, Latoya Gordon, Jean Christophe Haddad BIS/219 March 14, 2011 Marty Mueller University of Phoenix Amazon.com Evolution Paper It is said that Amazon.com may be moving away from its core competency of being a leading online retailer. With this paper we hope to discuss the probability of Amazon.com remaining the leading web based retailer. There was a statement made “That for the first time in its eight year history, Amazon.com posted a profitable quarter that wasn’t driven by holiday shopping (Williams, C. vice Pres. and Chief Technology Officer for Gap Inc., 2003).” When consumers are shopping for products they tend to shop over the internet, they feel it may be cheaper, easier and less time consuming than walking through shopping centers. Whether it happens for whatever reason, Amazon.com remains the largest online retailer. Amazon has invested many years and large sums of money developing their infrastructure, which it allows them to be the world’s top online retailer (Behr, M., 2003). Is Amazon.com moving away from its core competency of being a leading online retailer? They are expanding there operations by offering its own systems and servers, for use by other businesses that choose not to invest their money into their own infrastructure. Such services they provide are S3, Elastic Compute Cloud, or EC2, and various other services (Behr, M., 2003). For example S3 is a data base that companies...
