INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the study

In the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, the Zamboanga City was an armed conflict between the forces of the Republic of the Philippines and a faction of the Moro National Liberation Front, generally known by other factions as the Rogue MNLF Elements, under the Sulu State Revolutionary Command led by Ustadz Habier Malik and Khaid Ajibon, whose group continues to recognize Nur Misuari as MNLF Chairman.

The war erupted on September 9, 2013 when this MNLF faction attempted to raise the flag of the self-proclaimed Bangsamoro Republic at Zamboanga City Hall which caused the displacement of more than 100,000 people, the occupation of several barangays (villages) by the MNLF, the deaths of several civilians, the closure of the Zamboanga International Airport and the it also paralyzed the economic activity of Zamboanga City

The current conflict in Zamboanga may lead to a deterioration in confidence in the Philippines, with investors likely taking a second look at the country due to renewed peace-and-order issues, despite Mindanao’s riches, owing to the resources it has to offer that could benefit the agriculture and mining sectors, the area’s potential has never been maximized due to its troubled history. The immediate economic losses are estimated at 1.1 billion Philippine pesos per day. Meanwhile, several remittance centers are overflowing with customers after being closed for days, but they can only remit a limited amount. Despite this, Zamboanga residents patiently waited in line under the sun. Some establishments in Zamboanga are still closed even though they're far away from the conflict. Known as the sardine capital of the Philippines, several factories are operating on a limited capacity. It’s a big blow to employees, who are saving their wages before the December to March fishing ban begins. About 80% of the country's sardine supply comes from Zamboanga City. There are 11 giant canning factories and commercial fishing companies here that are giving some 30,000 people work. While the ongoing standoff has hit the industry, manufacturers assure consumers that prices of sardines will not go up.

Over a week of violence, the city of Zamboanga is little by little returning to normalcy, though wounds from the recent conflict still remains. Public services still have a long way ahead. But there are some naïve children affected by the war in Zamboanga whose education and future are uncertain. And many of the civilians were affected during the siege was students where they temporarily left their studies which take 2 weeks and 6 days stranded at their houses and evacuation centers hearing those gun fires and explosive mortars and RPGs which cause a trauma to the students. And before the students who are affected by the current fighting will go back to their respective school they must undergo stress debriefing to overcome their trauma.

The fighting may be over but a humanitarian crisis remains in Zamboanga city as more than thousand displaced residents would need a long-term support in rebuilding their homes and lives, according to a United Nations relief agency.

B. Statement of the Problem

The main idea of this study is to know the Academic Effects of Zamboanga Crisis to the directly affected students of Southern City Colleges.
It sought to answer the following questions

1. What is the effect of Zamboanga Crisis to students in terms of academic? 2. Is there a significant difference on the views of the respondents when grouped according to? a.) Gender b.) Year level

C. Significance of the Study

The proposed research will determine the academic effects of the students affected of the Zamboanga Crisis among Southern City Colleges students. The result of this study will make Southern City Colleges to overcome the trauma of the students. The researchers expect that through this study, the Southern City Colleges will develop strategic solutions regarding to the academic effect if we found out that most of the students have poor performances.

D. Scope and Limitations

The main focus of this research is to know the effect of Zamboanga Crisis to students in terms of academic.

The scopes of this research are the students here in Southern City Colleges from Grade 7 to Fourth year. The limitations of this research are only those students that are currently affected at Southern City Colleges. Only those concerned students are allowed to participate in this research.

E. Definition of Terms

Humanitarian Crisis – threatening in terms of health, safety or well being of a community or large group of people.

Siege – military blockade of a city or fortress with the intent of conquering by attrition or assault.

Debriefing – a process of questioning to gain information from an individual.

Standoff - a situation in which no result or conclusion can be reached because the two sides in a contest or dispute are equally matched or are equally intransigent
