Liquer

...1. Blue Curacao - is a liqueur flavored with the dried peel of the laraha citrus fruit, grown on the island of Curaçao. A non-native plant similar to an orange, the laraha developed from the sweet Valencia orange transplanted by Spanish explorers. The nutrient-poor soil and arid climate of Curaçao proved unsuitable to Valencia cultivation, resulting in small bitter fruit on the trees. But the aromatic peel maintained much of the essence of the Valencia varietal, and the trees were eventually bred into the current laraha cultivar, whose fruits remain inedibly bitter. Curaçao liqueur was first developed and marketed by the Senior family in the 19th century. To create the liqueur the laraha peel is dried, bringing out the sweetly fragranced oils. After soaking in a still with alcohol and water for several days, the peel is removed and other spices are added. The liqueur has an orange-like flavor with varying degrees of bitterness. It is naturally colorless, but is often given artificial coloring, most commonly blue or orange, which confers an exotic appearance to cocktails and other mixed drinks. Blue color is achieved by adding of food colorant, most often E133 Brilliant Blue. Some other liqueurs are also sold as Curaçaos with different flavors added, such as coffee, chocolate, and rum and raisin. 2. Benedictine - is a herbal liqueur beverage developed by Alexandre Le Grand in the 19th century and produced in France. It is claimed that at the Benedictine Abbey of Fécamp in Normandy...

Momordica Charantia and Influenza a

...Momordica Charantia and Influenza A The Momordica Charantia plant was determined to contain a protein that shows antiviral activity. The Momordica Charantia is a tropical plant found in China, India, Africa and parts of the Caribbean and is part of the cucumber family. Indigenous populations have used the fruit for many years in food and folk medicine (Hamissou, Smith, Carter, and Triplett 641). Researchers have found that the plant protein inhibits H1N1, H3N2 and H5N1 subtypes. Of the medicinal plants studied, the Momordica Charantia plant has been reported to contain many antiviral properties (Pongthanapisith, Ikuta, Puthavathana, and Leelamanit 1). The seed of the M. Charantia was purified of the protein using Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography. The proteins are separated using Sodium dodecyl polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The technique involves placing the protein mixture on gel containing an immobilized pH gradient. The gel slows the passage of proteins and acts as a molecular filter. Samples are loaded into the SDS-polyacrylamide gel and the electric field is applied. The gel slows the passage of proteins and acts as a molecular filter separating different protein molecules according to their size. Smaller proteins move faster than larger proteins and are found near the bottom of the gel. The gel is treated with a coomassie blue stain that binds to the proteins and allows the researcher to visualize the protein bands. The SDS-PAGE method is better suited...
