Recently a horrible tragedy occurred at our school; sadly we have lost two scholars from our community due to suicide. Suicide is the second-leading cause of deaths in youth ages 15-24. When a teen commits suicide it doesn’t only affect his or her family, it affects the community as well, Family members, friends, teammates, neighbors, and sometimes even those who didn't know the teen well might experience feelings of grief, confusion, guilt — and the sense that if only they had done something differently, the suicide could have been prevented. There are many ways to prevent teen suicide not only by the family but by the community. Besides talking to your teen about suicide try showing them the negative effects it has on the family and community in whole, for example someone who commits suicide may cause another person that cares about them to kill themselves in grief or guilt. A suicide may also cause depression in a community or individual house hold, also leading to a greater risk of suicide. Think about all the things you can do with your life just going to waste from a suicide, suicide is not the way to cope with life stress. Suicide is not the only way out of tough situations, there’s always someone willing to openly talk about your issues such as counselors or peers. Another thought, when your feeling as if you’re the only one going through hard times just know there is someone having the same issues. Try joining clubs or organizations that may help or get your mind off issues in life. Talking openly about suicidal thoughts and feelings can save a life. Speak up if you're concerned and seek professional help immediately! Through understanding, reassurance, and support, you can help an individual overcome thoughts of suicide.
