Taj Atkinson is in his junior year at Rowan University where he studies business management, prior to college he founded the Black Lives Matter movement in the city of Newark in New Jersey. Taj’s purpose behind starting this movement was to “emphasize self-worth and knowledge of each other to expose sub-standard conditions”. He is also one of three students who launched a bow tie tradition at Central High School of Newark New Jersey to change the image of his peers and reduce negative stereotypes that exist in his community. “B.L.M” or Black Lives Matter followed the killings of Eric Gardner and Trayvon Martin in an effort to improve police and intercity communication.
