The movie I chose to write a review on is called "the blind side". The movie is based on a true story of a young African American homeless boy, Michael Oher, who is adopted by a generous white family. At first he struggles to live with the family because of past circumstances and conditions that made him who he was; an “ordinary stereotypical” black boy with no schooling, no real family, and no future. Throughout the film, Michael has experiences that put him in a difficult place. He has never experienced such loving kindness from anyone, and to see it now coming from a white family, he is hesitant to believe it is too good to be true. In our ethnic studies class, we discuss the different type of cultures and races that are in our community. In this case, the African American culture has many of the following stereotypes: Unintelligent and childlike, animalistic/bestial, lazy, criminals, uncivilized, and part of the poor class. All throughout the movie we will see several examples of this and how it affected Michael and the Tuohy's, the white family that took him in as one of their own.
Our story takes place in Memphis Tennessee. The main character, Michael Oher, is a poor African American that was taken from his mother as a child. He lives in a foster home, but tries many times to escape, but every time he leaves he would be brought back or placed into a different one. Again, he would run away and not want to be found. He spent most of his time on the streets, walking around with nowhere to go. Michael was noticed for his size and athletic ability, but he never got an education. His teachers would pass him with d's so that he could move to the next grade and they wouldn't have to deal with him anymore. He was currently attending an all white private Christian school.
