I observed a Subway sandwich restaurant on November 20, 2015 in Citrus Heights between the hours of 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm. I choose this time because it represents the peak hours of operation and would provide me with the best possible data for this blog. The customer will be asked what kind of bread they would like and depending on the order, the bread may be toasted, which would increase the time. After the bread station, the vegetable station would be next, then the meats station, and finally the condiments and final wrapping. The process would finish with the cashier at the far end of the assembly line. As I entered the establishment, there was a small line in front of me with approximately 3-4 people in front of me. The four people ahead of me ordered a total of five sandwiches (one person ordered two) and took a total of 8:25 minutes. This translates to about 5 sandwiches / 8:25 minutes = 101 seconds (about 1:41 minutes per sandwich). I purposefully ordered a simple sandwich off the “number” menu and did not order a custom sandwich. I wanted to see how fast they can make the sandwich as a basis of measurement. As my turn came up, I placed my order and waited for the process to begin. It took me 1:20 minutes to order and pay for my basic sandwich. The problem really starts to arise when there are many people in line and breads that have to be toasted. Toasting bread takes about 45 seconds and adds a great amount time to overall process. All the orders were ordered from word of mouth and the cashier would have to ask the people who made the sandwich what the customer ordered. If the sandwich was a custom order, the worker would have to explain the entire contents of the sandwich to the cashier thus increasing the time even more. There were only two employees at the time and the cashier would often be the same person that would make the sandwiches. 2. The main problem of Subway is that the lines and order times can increase and create dissatisfaction among the customers. The time in line, bread wait times, and creating “custom” sandwich creates a bottleneck and increases the average time. The quality of food at Subway has always been adequate and with all the negative press the company has been receiving, you would think the franchise operations would create tools for a smother process. Wait time would be main operational performance measure for customers who are on their lunch break. They have very valuable minutes and cannot be using them waiting in line.
3. Increasing the bottleneck by staffing more employees would be a way to decrease the average wait times. The owner would have to be very careful in doing this because they would have to do a demand schedule and find out the number of customers during peak hours. Would hiring an extra employee be beneficial to increase customer satisfaction but to have them sit idly for the rest of the day? The ideal situation would require an employee to come in for a partial day or to several partial day employees overlap their schedules so that they will fill the rush hour crunch.

...Valid Research Resources Students in higher education have a plethora of research resources available. These resources include traditional items and virtual or web-based items. Traditional items, such as printed textbooks and professional journals, are generally accepted by institutions of higher education as valid resources to obtain peer reviewed articles. Virtual items, such as search blogs and wikis are not widely accepted as valid resources to obtain research materials. Blogs and Wikis by design are virtual resources available to anyone for posting an opinion or information. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a Blog as ‘a Web site that contains online personal reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer’ (Blog) and a Wiki as ‘a Web site that allows visitors to make changes, contributions, or corrections’ (Wiki). The slow acceptance of virtual resources is mainly due to the lack of control of changes, contributions or corrections to these sites. A well known example of a Wiki is Wikipedia. According to Wikipedia, it began in January 2001, to allow collaboration on articles prior to entering the peer-review process (History Para 1). As of May 2014, Wikipedia is the world's sixth-most-popular website (Alexa Para 1) and is the largest general-knowledge encyclopedia online, with over 31.5 million articles, in 287 languages.(Stats Para 2.9) This paper will review the pros and cons of using Wikipedia as a valid resource for students and review resources...

English Reflection

...I’m happy with the way I started these blogs out. However, I would like to improve the quality of these blogs by improving the subcategories i'm being assessed on. Specifically, I want to create blogs that are stronger in analysis and clarity. I often start doing these blogs 1-2 days before the blogs are due, in order to give myself to think and reflect on what I should do. So far my planning for these blogs have been watching VODs of the games or livestreams of the event, and taking notes on a notebook. I use these notes and start to think about how i’m going to organize my blog and what structure it should have. I used some resources but I think I can use them more effectively. I used classmates, such as Alejandro and Nick to generate new ideas. Since Tommy from our class also plays League of Legends and follows esports, I can sometimes ask for his opinion to see what he thinks. From a feedback suggestion by you, to get someone to read my blog before posting it to fix the flow of the paper, I’m starting to to...

Social Media Reaction Paper

...Reaction Paper Regarding the Flow of Influence and Social Meaning Across Social Media Networks Mahalia Miller Daniel Wiesenthal October 6, 2010 1 Introduction One topic of current interest is how language and sentiments are transmitted in the blogosphere and how individuals affect the sentiments of those in their online sphere of influence. Therefore, the focus of this reaction paper is threefold: (1) to summarize four journal papers related to sentiments and influence, (2) to critique the methods and scope of the journal papers and (3) to brainstorm directions for the term project. 2 2.1 Literature review Java et al. 2006 Java et al. (2006) explore models that determine the blogs with the most influence on the Blogosphere. The paper defines influence as a link from blog a to blog b implies that a influences blog b. They further create an influence graph that weights edges by a function of the amount of links. This paper evaluates various heuristics, such as Pagerank, indegree, and greedy algorithm, to determine which blogs have the most influence on the Blogosphere. The analysis shows that PageRank is rather efficient and converges quickly. The paper also analyzes the effect of splogs, i.e. spam blogs. The results indicate that not removing splogs greatly impacts the accuracy of the influence models. As such, the paper uses some algorithms to identify splogs, and then, and only then, do the heuristics converge to within 70% agreement on the predicted number of influenced...

Improving Healthcare in America on a National and Individual Level

...Improving Quality and Value in the U.S. Health Care System By: Niall Brennan, Nicole Cafarella, S. Lawrence Kocot, Aaron McKethan, Marisa Morrison, Nadia Nguyen, Mark Shepard and Reginald D. Williams II Share on email Share on twitter Share on facebook Share on linkedin More... Share on google_plusone_share Share on stumbleupon Share on reddit Share on print Executive Summary The U.S. health care system faces significant challenges that clearly indicate the urgent need for reform. Attention has rightly focused on the approximately 46 million Americans who are uninsured, and on the many insured Americans who face rapid increases in premiums and out-of-pocket costs. As Congress and the Obama administration consider ways to invest new funds to reduce the number of Americans without insurance coverage, we must simultaneously address shortfalls in the quality and efficiency of care that lead to higher costs and to poor health outcomes. To do otherwise casts doubt on the feasibility and sustainability of coverage expansions and also ensures that our current health care system will continue to have large gaps — even for those with access to insurance coverage. There is broad evidence that Americans often do not get the care they need even though the United States spends more money per person on health care than any other nation in the world. Preventive care is underutilized, resulting in higher spending on complex, advanced diseases. Patients with chronic diseases such as hypertension...

...Public Relations Journal Vol. 2, No. 2, Spring 2008 © 2008 Public Relations Society of America How Blogs and Social Media are Changing Public Relations and the Way it is Practiced Donald K. Wright & Michelle D. Hinson1 This article reports on a three-year-long international survey of public relations practitioners examining the impact blogs and other social media are having on public relations practice. Findings show these new media are dramatically changing public relations. Results indicate blogs and social media have enhanced what happens in public relations and that social media and traditional mainstream media complement each other. The study also finds the emergence of blogs and social media have changed the way their organizations communicate, especially to external audiences. Findings suggest social media complement traditional news media, and that blogs and social media influence coverage in traditional news media. The study reports blogs and social media have made communications more instantaneous by encouraging organizations to respond more quickly to criticism. Introduction David Meerman Scott (2008), an online thought leadership and viral marketing strategist, says, “one of the coolest things about the Web is that when an idea takes off it can propel a brand or a company to seemingly instant fame and fortune” (p. 8). Scott also points out that although communicating via the Web usually is free – as opposed to purchasing space through traditional...

Gen 200

...Research Strategy Paper on the Lack of Self-Confidence GEN/200 Research Strategy Paper on the Lack of Self-Confidence Johnson Pope, an English poet, said, “Self-confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings.” However, I definitely do not have that quality. Self-confidence describes a person who has faith on themselves. A problem that affects me every day is my lack of self-confidence. My self-confidence affects me in my decision making, career, and social skills. It also affects me when I am passing up opportunities that can be rewarding. An example how my self-confidence affects me is when I will not stand a chance competing against another person. I do not do well in a challenge. I give in easily. I doubt about myself and my abilities to do any task. The fear of rejection and failure hunts me every day. My lack of self-confidence overly preoccupies me with what others think. What I need to do is build confidence and take charge of my life to overcome my problem. One of the methods I can use to work on my self-confidence is looking for a support group. They are a lot of internet support groups or blogs about self-confidence that I can rely for support. I feel that if I can share my feelings without face-to-face time, I can open up more to my feelings and assist me better. Another place that I can use to gather information is to see a Psychologist. Psychologists are trained individuals and with a tremendous amount of experience that can be use in assist...
