...Complications of a Bad Neighbor-Solve a Problem Paper Rhonda Mayer PHL/458 September 2, 2012 Tracy Colcord At some point everyone encounters a problem or issue in their lifetime and the most difficult part of it could be finding a solution. According to the book “ The Art of Thinking” by Ryan Ruggiero, the greatest difficulty people have in thinking about problems and issues is evaluating the various solutions and choosing the best one. Growing up most of us desire to have a family and a nice comfortable home. Taking the first step to buying a house is a difficult decision and most couples goes through a lot of planning when preparing to make this commitment. Aside from financial support, searching for the right house takes a lot a lot of time. When the house is found that’s desired the next step is to investigate the neighborhood. Many times this step is omitted but it may be the most important step to making a final decision because the neighborhood as a whole is the place which people invest, raise their children and live for many years to come. Making sure to cover all needed steps to buying a home is most crucial for peace and happiness to be united inside and outside the home. When I bought my first home in Georgia in 1998, my husband and I were in a hurry to purchase a home for our family of three. The ritual held in this small town and other surrounding towns is an annual event that is taken in stride by all the town folk but leaves the reader wondering how such a violent event came to be and how it could continue through the years. Could people actually believe that by sacrificing one of their own that the corn crops would be plentiful the near year? The author, Jackson, takes you to a particular day which annually affects this small town with a population of 300. Initially, the author introduces the villagers one by one and she writes of how the neighbors gather in the town square and begin conversing with one another about various details of their, what appears to be typical, day to day activities. The men talk about crops, the children are still celebrating the summer break from school and the women begin to gossip. Life appears to be what one would expect in a small town as the author describes how the boys in the village begin gathering rocks in an almost innocent manner. As the story progresses, it begins to focus more on the annual lottery which has been tradition in the town throughout the years. The author makes it seem like winning the lottery is a good thing until its true implications begin to unravel within the story. The locale town folk ritualistically gather in the...

...Essay 1- Comparison of the neighbors In Robert Frost’s poems “Mending Wall” and “The Ax-Helve,” the characters demonstrate the comparable differences of being each other’s neighbor. Frost uses these poems to tell us that we shouldn’t determine one’s worth on first interaction. Although Frost suggests that we should share amongst our neighbors yet there should be a boundary. In both poems, one neighbor is willing to be the open and “good neighbor” while in contrast, the other wants excludes himself. (Frost, Mending Wall) I “Mending wall” the neighbors like having a fence between the two. The fence symbolizes many different things, but ultimately it symbolizes a space or boundary between the two. This is completely different from “The Ax Helve” where the French neighbor wants the other neighbor over. So while they are very much different they are also very much similar. (Frost, Ax helve) The similarities come into play when you look into the underlying meaning and triggers of each poem, in both the neighbors have this unspoken suspicion of the other neighbor. For example in “Mending Wall” the narrator did not see the need for the wall between them which was there to create an alienation and a similar alienation was created by the cultural differences between the two neighbors in “The Ax Helve.” In the “Mending Wall” the narrator and the neighbor pretty much agree on the benefit of the wall, and in the end they both repair the wall, but the narrator did question the...

...society are prejudice and judgmental towards the ‘unknown’ person, and we will rather observe and assume things about each other than getting to know one another. This is also the case for the main character and her neighbors in Joanne Harris novel ‘Tea with the birds’ from 2001. The narrator lives in a flat in Mortimer Street. The narrator describes Mortimer Street as being “busy without being comfortable; crowded without being friendly” .Mortimer street has a sense of coldness around it, and no-one really knows their neighbors even though they “live like birds in cages” . The coldness suits the narrator, because she enjoys the solitude, privacy and silence of her own flat. This has aroused her neighbors’ curiosity and suspicious towards her, because as she describes “I’m a completely different race from my neighbors” . Both the narrator and her neighbors consider her as an outsider, but this does not bother the narrator. Her neighbors consider her as being snobby cause of her reluctance to speak with them. Therefore her neighbors observe her and presume, she is a student nurse and she doesn’t bother to correct them. Mortimer Street is a reflection on the narrators own personality. She is very introverted and doesn’t have an interest in getting to know her neighbors. The narrator lives her lonely life, until the day when Mr. Juzo Tamaoki moves in the apartment opposite to hers. “Another foreigner said the Mortimer Street grapevine, with barely concealed disapproval” . This once...

This type of convincing could be done by expressing information, a message or feelings by using written or spoken words. Persuasion takes strategic planning. We have learned about the seven most popular persuasive strategies used in our daily lives. I never realize how much persuasion is used every day. We see it a lot in marketing and advertising daily. Everyday someone is trying to persuade us to buy an item on TV, radio or signs. Or vice versa we try to influence our peers to do something or feel some way. Many times in my life I have been in situations which involve the persuasion of Reciprocation. I’m going to show that we are always inclined to repay another person with a kind gesture. ...Comparative Essay: Country or City Living Try to picture in your mind the perfect place to live. Did you visualize living in a fast paced or laid back place? How about a place where you know and have a relationship with your neighbors? How about having the basic conveniences and amenities close by? By thinking on these questions you have categorized your choices into two categories: country or city living. Which would you choose? Many believe that city living has more benefits than country living, however, there are some that believe that country living is a real life dream. In order to make a firm decision, a comparison between the two types of living should be conducted as living in either location has both advantages and disadvantages. Some of the similar factors to consider for living in the country or living in the city are the routine, the people’s characteristics, and the life conditions. On the other hand, some of the differences to consider in living in the country compared to living in the city are the cost of living, the relationship with neighbors the basic conveniences and luxury amenities.
