ABSTRACT: Blue - ray disc have major part among the secondary storage devices. Blu-ray disc is a next generation optical disc format. Blu-ray disc is an optical disc storage media designed to supersede the standard DVD format. Its main uses are storing high-defination, other data with upto 25GB per single layered and 50 GB per dual layer disc. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-defination video(HD),and storing amount of data because the disc utilizes the global standard "MPEG-Z Transport stream"compression technology highly compatible with Digital Broadcasting for a wide range of content recorded. This technology platform that can store sound maintaining high quality and also access the store content in an easy-to-use way.

1. Introduction:

Blu-ray Disc is an optical disc storage medium designed to supersede the standard DVD format. The name Blu-ray Disc refers to the Blue Laser used to read the disc. Blu-ray is a next-generation optical disc format. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video, as well as storing large amounts of data. The discs have the same physical dimensions as standard DVDs and CDs.A standard DVD uses a 650-nanometer red laser, Blu-ray Disc uses a 405-nm laser. This shorter wavelength allows for over five times more data storage on single-layer and over 10 times on double-layer Blu-ray Disc than a standard DVD. Developed by the "Blu-ray Disc Founders" group, these companies include Hitachi, LG, Matsushita, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, and Thomson. Although

...Blu Ray Disc Abstract When speaking of innovation, technology certainly does not seem to be slowing down any time soon. A perfect example of this can be seen with audio and video disc-based technology. Throughout history, discs have evolved tremendously. This research paper discusses the newest type of disc-based technology better known as a Blu-ray disc. Blu-ray discs are a relatively new kind of disc that takes entertainment to a whole new level. Like with other innovative and new types of technology, the disc developed new ways in which society sees certain issues. Some of the main points discussed throughout the paper about the Blu-ray disc include its background as a new form of technology, its potential benefits, its production, and its future. The paper will also describe and emphasize on its social, legal, ethical, and security-related problems since its development and launch into the world. This paper explores the           “format war” that was developed in the 2000s between the Blu-ray disc and Toshiba’s HD DVD disc, and the issues that were created as a result of these two different and incompatible disc formats. Relating to security, this paper discusses how piracy has been somewhat victorious, yet a failure at times, when dealing with illegally downloading films of this high-definition format. Also, the paper will discuss the legal aspects of the Blu-ray discs, as it relates to licensing and copyrights. Socially, this paper gives examples of ways in which the...

...distribution and recording. Furthermore, the increased capacity accommodated more demanding data applications. At the same time, the DVD spec used the same form factor as the CD, allowing for seamless migration to the next generation format and offering full backwards compatibility Now, in the next millennium, High Definition video is demanding a new solution. History proved that a significant five to ten time increase in storage capacity and the ability to play previous generation formats are key elements for a new format to succeed. This new format has arrived with the advent of Blu-ray Disc, the only format that offers a considerable increase in storage capacity with its 25 to 50 GB data capacity. This allows for the next big application of optical media: the distribution and recording of High Definition video in the highest possible quality. In fact, no other proposed format can offer the data capacity of Blu-ray Disc, and no other format will allow for the same high video quality and interactive features to create the...

...User Manual Critique University of Phoenix ENG/221 Technical Writing Fundamentals Sony® Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System N590 In this critique I will analyze the organization, layout, written and visual instructions of the Sony® Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System. I. Organization The user manual for the Sony® Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System was well organized. The table of contents helps users search for specific topics which comes in handy especially for people like me who like to skip around for what they need instead having to read the entire manual. The one downfall about the organization is that is doesn’t have a picture of the product on the cover page. Although we know what a Blu-ray/DVD system looks like and it should automatically have the correct manual in its box, there may be an instance where that has not happened or if you misplaced your original manual and need another. The photo would come in handy especially if there is a certain layout that this particular has as opposed to other models. Having the photo is further reinforcement that you have the correct product. II. Layout The layout of this manual is standard. The warning sections and intial operating instructions are seen in most user manuals. Something that used to be uncommon which we are seeing more often in user manuals is the unpacking section. This section further details the parts of the entertainment system piece by piece. The remainder of the layout includes more standard...

...References: (Nystedt 2008) Storage When it comes to storage, blu-ray disc has definitely been a leap forward in terms of how much data we can hold on a single disc. When the DVD disc was still popular it was only able to hold up to five gigabytes of storage. Now, you may think that is quite a bit, but remember you have to store audio, video, and miscellaneous information on a single disc. The resulting limitations of the DVD disc became apparent as we moved forward in technology advancements with audio and video. When the blu-ray disc was becoming popular it started out with a single layer which was capable of over 25 gigabytes of data storage. The technology world was flung open to new opportunities in greater audio performance as well as what is now trending as 4K television. Video The video industry was stymied by the low-end data storage of the DVD Disc. They needed something to be able to cram more data that was more advanced and high end to the consumer. What better place to start with the blu-ray disc when Sony and Pioneer unveil the new format at Japan’s Ceatec show in 2000. They had also announced the Ultra Density Optical, a blue-laser optical disc format proposed to replace the magneto-optical discs. Amazing how a large multi-commercial product corporation mostly known for video development had come up with the idea. Video playback was able to move forward to what we know as high definition at 1080p resolution. Great looking picture was...

...ABSTRACT Optical discs share a major part among the secondary storagedevices. Blu-ray disc is a next generation optical disc format. The technology utilizes a blue laser diode operating at awavelength of 405nm to read and write data. Because of theblue laser it can store enormous amount of data than was everpossible.Data is stored on a BD in the form of tiny ridges on the surfaceof an opaque 1.1mm thick substrate. This lies beneath atransparent .1mm protective layer. With the help of Blu-rayrecording devices it is possible to record upto 2.5 hrs of veryhigh quality audio and video on a single BD.Blu-ray also promises some added security, making ways forcopyright protections. Paradigm Shift: the Format War

...Paradigm Shift: The Format War CD to DVD to Blu-ray Compact discs used to be the standard format for stored media that can be accessed or played through a CD player or a PC that has a CD-ROM drive. Maximum storage capacity is about 750 to 800MBs or megabytes. Who can remember the stacks upon countless stacks of CD cases (and the discs themselves) either stashed around the house or scattered all over the floor? CDs proved very essential for storing backup files just in case the original files were to be corrupted or deleted accidentally. And what about those CD holders strapped around your car’s sun visor carrying about 10 to 20 of your favorite CDs? Who can forget those days when music came in the form of MP3s that were “burned” to a disc to be played in car CD players? For a time, even VCDs which stand for Video Compact Discs were very popular in the third world market. Illegal copies of movies that were not yet released were sold all over the world through this format not to mention having such poor video and audio quality that VCDs provide. Also, who can ever forget the annoying whirring and clicking of a CD player trying to make sense of a scratched-up disc? Late 90s to mid-2000s saw the potential of the new DVD format which stands for Digital Video Disc. It proudly boasts high quality graphics and supports Dolby Digital surround sound technology to name a few. Data capacity ranges from approximately 4.3 to about 15GB or gigabytes depending on how many sides and...

...Blu-ray Disc (official acronym BD, also known as BR or Blu-ray) is an optical disc storage medium designed to supersede the standard DVD format. Its main uses are for storing high-definition video, PlayStation 3 video games, and other data, with up to 25 GB per single layered, and 50 GB per dual layered disc. The name Blu-ray Disc derives from the blue-violet laser used to read the disc. While a standard DVD uses a 650 nanometer red laser, Blu-ray uses a shorter wavelength, a 405 nm blue-violet laser, and allows for almost ten times more data storage than a DVD. Blu-ray Disc was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group representing makers of consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion pictures. As of June 2009, more than 1,500 Blu-ray Disc titles are available in Australia and the United Kingdom, with 2,500 in Japan, the United States and Canada. At the 2005 Java One trade show, it was announced that Sun Microsystems' Java cross-platform software environment would be included in all Blu-ray Disc players as a mandatory part of the standard. Java is used to implement interactive menus on Blu-ray Discs, as opposed to the method used on DVD video discs. DVDs use pre-rendered MPEG segments and selectable subtitle pictures, which are considerably more primitive and rarely seamless. At the conference, Java creator James Gosling suggested that the inclusion of a Java Virtual Machine, as well as network connectivity in some BD devices, will allow updates to Blu-ray Discs...

...movie industry. With their extensive selection based product, fast delivery, and wide subscription plan, there is no limit to their success. However, some questions arise with the subject of product differentiation. What happens when technology advances over time and the product changes? If Netflix concentrates too much on their product focus and ignores the future, then a substitute product will take over only in a matter of time. In our current business environment, product improvements are essential and changing rapidly. If Netflix does not plan out the obsolescence of DVD’s then there is no future. The recent introduction of Blu-ray technology has offered a huge advancement in the production of DVDs. Blu-Ray discs offer more than five times the storage capacity than traditional DVDs, and gives the viewer a full HD experience. By 2008, Blu-Ray Disc sales already increased during the holiday season. A survey that was conducted by DEG (Digital Entertainment Group) proved that consumer interest in new technology was increasing quickly. Their...

Blu Ray vs Dvd

...Blu – Ray the future of movies Blu Ray - Blu-ray (not Blue-ray) also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a new optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers. The first Blu-ray Disc prototypes were unveiled in October 2000, and it continued to be developed until its official release in June 2006. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs will offer consumers an unprecedented HD experience. The specifications of Blu – Ray vs. DVD Blu-Ray uses a blue-violet laser as opposed to the red laser used on DVDs. This allows Blu-Ray discs to hold a lot more information on them than DVDs. This increase in the amount of information that can be stored on a disc allows you to put High-Definition movies on a disc and not run out of space, since the average HD movie will take up about 15-20 gigabyte (GB) of space. If you have not seen an HD movie yet I would suggest stopping by your local Best Buy or Circuit City and looking at a Blu-Ray display. The images are sharper, brighter, and more detailed than any DVD movie. What manufacturers are trying to do is make the movie look as close to what you see in a real theater as possible, except for it is a tenth the size and in your home. Blu-Rays...

...HD-DVD versus Blu-ray Name Professor Name Course Title Date There was a time when the only place one can watch a movie was in a cinema. Then after a while, as technology progressed, more means were evolved. There were video cassettes first, followed by CDs. The reign of CDs lasted until the format DVD was carved out. Ultimately, this evolution resulted in the pinnacle of entertainment: the Blu-ray Disc. This research paper will look at the various reasons behind the development of both the DVD,HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc and will analyze why Blu-ray Disc is better than its counterparts. First, let us take a look at the formation and development of DVD. DVD is essentially the acronym of Digital Versatile Disc and was developed in 1995 by the joint cooperation of industry giants like Sony, Phillips, Time Warner, Toshiba, Panasonic, Mitsubishi Electric, Thomson, JVC, Pioneer and Hitachi (Taylor, 1998). The DVD was a replacement of the cumbersome Video Cassette (VHS) as it offered superior audio, video quality and could store a lot more data. The founding members formed the DVD Forum, which vowed to promote, and developed the format. However, as HD TVs, which could display pictures and videos at a resolution of 1080p started to emerge in the late 1990s, there was a need for another format, which could store HD videos inexpensively. In August 2002, Toshiba and NEC developed the HD DVD technology, which was adopted by the members of the DVD Forum. Meanwhile, using a blue laser technology...

...What are these advantages? 3) Make a chart of the various firms offering video-streaming services. List the pros and cons of each, along with its revenue model. Which efforts do you think will survive a shakeout? Why? 4) Investigate the firm Red Box. Do you think they are a legitimate threat to Netflix? Why or why not? Netflix offers two main services at various cost structures. The first service they provide, which is also basis of their original model, is DVD-by-mail. This service is set up so a subscriber can have a certain amount of DVD’s or Blu-ray discs out at a time. Your cost structure is as follows for having the DVD or Blue-ray disc out respectively: One Disc for $7.99/month (DVD), $9.99/month (Blu-ray); Two Discs for $11.99/month (DVD), $14.99/month (Blu-ray); Three Discs for $15.99/month (DVD), $19.99/month (Blu-ray); and finally a “Limited Plan” of Two Discs per month for $4.99 (DVD), $5.99/month (Blu-ray). The second service they provide is that of online streaming. This service allows a subscriber to stream movies and TV shows directly from an online source. The cost of this varies depending on how many screens you want to be capable of watching at one time. You can watch up to 2 screen in HD for $7.99/month; and up to 4 screens for $11.99/month. Costs for both these services will likely rise over time as competition increases. The DVD-by-mail is more likely to rise at a faster pace because...

...Question 1: In the case study Blu-ray versus HD-DVD: A standards battle in high-definition video (Schilling, 2013,pp 65-66), what factors do you think influenced whether (1) consumers, (2) retailers, and (3) movie producers supported Blu-ray versus HD-DVD? Discuss and justify your answer using the theory behind the selection of dominant designs. Intro; In the early 2000’s Toshiba and Sony, two tech giants went head to head to provide homes with the next generation of high definition video. Toshiba’s new technology was called HD-DVD and was compatible with the old technology, DVD. Sony released Blu-Ray which required a new playing system altogether. After both companies had secured major contracts in the entertainment industry there was one moment that helped Sony to become the dominant product. Time Warner, formerly in alliance with Toshiba, switched to Sony prompting other undecided companies, including Walmart and Netflix, to follow suite. After this the tech war was effectively over and Toshiba ceased production of HD-DVD’s and components. Although at the same time an alternative product for watching movies was growing; online streaming. This provided a similar experience, depending on how fast the internet was in the area, but at a cheaper cost of being digital media. Consumers; in the fight for supremacy the early adopters of the technology are very influential because they will be more likely to have researched about which product was better based on technical factors...

Computer Memory

...Magnetic Storage Magnetic storage devices store data by magnetizing particles on a disk or tape. A floppy disk is so called because it consists of a flexible sheet of plastic, coated with iron oxide – a magnetizable material. A floppy disk drive spins at 360 revolutions per minute (rpm), so it's relatively slow. However, a hard drive spins at over 7,200 rpm and stores data on a stack of metal rotating disks called platters. This means you can store much more data and retrieve information much faster. New disks need to be formatted before you can use them, unless they come preformatted from the manufacturer. When the disk is formatted, the operating system (OS) organizes the disk surface into circular tracks and divides each track into sectors. The OS creates a directory which will record the specific location of files. When you save a file, the OS moves the read/write head of the drive towards empty sectors, records the data and writes an entry for the directory. Later on, when you open that file, the OS looks for its entry in the directory, moves the read/write heads to the correct sector, and reads the file in the RAM area. However, formatting erases any existing files on a disk, so do not format disks on which data that you don't want to lose is stored. The OS allows you to create one or more partitions on your hard drive, in effect dividing it into several logical parts. Partitions let you install more than one operating system (e.g. Windows and Linux) on your computer...
