...Briana Laszlo English 110 Atherton 5 March 2014 Devil in a Blue Dress: Themes In the devil in a blue dress, written by Walter Mosley some of the main themes are prejudice and freedom. Racial prejudice is prominent throughout the entire book. The word “nigger” is constantly being used throughout the book in both a friendly manor and a demeaning one as well. The white men in this story use “ nigger” to display their power over the black characters. In the story, the black man is always to blame and they are the ones who have to work extra hard to remain existent. The constant owner-slave relationship is being displayed throughout the interactions between African Americans and the white folks. Every white man in the story has power over every black man in the story. They use their color to get what they want. As soon as Easy is able to walk away from each white man including- Ricardo, Mr. Albright and Michael Teran, he is given a new sense a freedom. In a way these men were his slave-owner and each time he refused their power and he was given freedom. Just like slavery when it was most prominent, black people had to fight their way to survive. All the black men in this story are doing just that. Each time someone is killed it represents the killer doing something to try and help himself to survive. Freedom is represented by Easy’s house as well. Easy owning property does give him some kind of social status in this racist world he lives in. Racial prejudice also brings...

...The Devil In The Blue Dress by Walter Mosley, portrays the societal and racial hierarchy in post-World War II Crenshaw, California. Throughout the novel, readers are shown the dynamic relationship between the black male and the white male by the characterization and experiences of Ezekiel Rawlins. This dynamic racial relationship is both parasitic, mutualistic, and commensalistic -ultimately defining it to be an interestingly blurred and fluctuating concept. The relationship is demonstrated through Easy’s mutualistic job as a private investigator, his parasitic interaction with the police, and his commensalistic relationship with Daphne. Easy is an example of the African-American who traveled from the South during the Great Migration. His...

...The Big Fight Improving race relations in the United States is a battle that we have been fighting since the start of this great country. The issue of race has evolved over time, but still continues to affect society. The Trayvon Martin shooting, Donald Trump's campaign, and the Duke Lacrosse team, have sparked racial controversy in America. The split between races is becoming more evident than ever. Trayvon Martin, an African American, was killed by an armed gunman in Ferguson, Missouri. Race was forced to the forefront of social media after this senseless act of violence. The phrase “Black Lives Matter” became the unified slogan by many African Americans and was mainly used for peaceful, and sometimes violent protests. This shooting received nationwide attention and soon turned into what social media would say was a race crime. Most of the evidence in this case pointed to Travon Martin acting as a suspicious character in a quiet community. The way he walked and dressed would end up being his downfall. The real question is why did America make it seem like a racial shooting rather than a careless act of violence between a Hispanic male and an African-American male. Social media hyped this shooting to another level and made it about race where everyone had to pick a side whether they wanted to or not, causing huge racial tension throughout America. Recent elections have brought racism back to the limelight in America with the help of social media, and front runner...

...I Saw the Devil “Somehow our devils are never quite what we expect when we meet them face to face”. The priest’s words echoed loudly inside of the holy church. I looked at the people around me. “He could be here” I thought. “He could be everywhere. Those fools don’t have a clue about what they are against. The priest continued: “May the devil make a ladder your bones – While he is picking apples in the garden of Hell”. I looked at the priest with a feeling of relief. I already knew that. I found out a long time ago. I felt it and saw it – everyday. The church remained behind me and the light went out. The darkness embraced me and my breath became even heavier. My footsteps echoed loudly as the rain outside started to fall - slowly and soft in the beginning and suddenly, without a sign, heavy and merciless. I put my worn jacket tighter around my shoulders and started jogging. “Damn it. The devil is here. The rain must have been a sign from God to tell me about this. I knew it. I had to hurry, before the he has captured me as his next prey”. I began to run while my heart was beating in my chest. I looked feverish behind my back to make sure I was not followed. No one was there. But I couldn’t relax, because he could be everywhere, couldn’t he? ...the clock in a tied game with the Duke Blue Devils. I could barely hear my coach in the huddle because the crowd was still rockin’ from the turnover I forced on the other team to give us the last shot. I faintly heard my coach call the play for me to come off the screen to take the last shot. As the buzzer sounds for us to break the huddle I remember how big the stadium felt as I tried to maintain my composure knowing the game was in my hands. After the ball was inbounded, we executed our play to perfection as I came off the screen with an open look and three seconds left on the clock. I catch the ball and shoot the shot I’ve shot over a thousand times. The arena goes silent as I hold my follow through and watch the ball on its path to the rim. The ball hits front rim, momentum gives it a slight bounce and drops in the net. My teammates rush me and take me to the ground celebrating with the rest of the crowd as they storm the court. ...Dilemma at Devils Den Allan R Cohen Abstract This paper explores the case study Dilemma at Devils Den, which was created by Allan R. Cohen from Babson College (2004), and focuses on a fictional student named Susan and an experience with a few problems that she has at her college’s campus snack bar, the Devil’s Den. This paper aims to discuss Susan’s problems that she has identified with the night operations at the Devil’s Den, and whether or not the night shift managerial team performs strategy execution processes adequately. Introduction Susan identifies that the main problem mainly has to do with the night shift operations at the Devil’s Den. She points out that she had been noticing the fact that many of the employees at the snack bar were simply allowing their friends to take snacks without having to pay for them at all. Susan also points out those employees were also taking the snacks for free themselves. While ordinarily this is not a problem, the employees are only allowed to take snacks when they are on duty, and it has become a common situation where the employees simply leave with food. According to Susan, it has gotten so bad that employees will take food in front of the customers, who then think it would be okay to take food without paying as well, leading to this becoming a problem as well. Another problem that Susan identifies is the fact that the employees were not doing anything to stop or challenge the customers from taking the snacks from the Den. Susan...

...In rural regions near the Appalachian Mountains small communities of people worship in churches known for handling deadly serpents as part of everyday rituals. The practice of serpent handling is justified using a passage found in the King James Bible: And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (Mark 16:17-18) Other Christians dismiss these practices by saying the passage is not to be taken literally. They consider the people following all of the signs mentioned by Mark as foolish, and claim it only leads to the premature deaths of the worshippers. However, this view does not take any sort of phenomenological approach. It does not attempt to interpret why the people worship in this way, nor what it means for them to worship in this way. This view only attempts to refute the practice of handling serpents altogether because of the potential risk of death that accompanies it. Therefore, it is necessary to interpret their actions from a less biased approach, in order to be more encompassing of a practice that is not always fully understood. It is my belief that the people participating in these serpent handling rituals know the element of danger that exists, but that the purpose, reaffirming their connection to God, is greater than the risk to their individual...

...Shaniqua S. Boyd February 6, 2015 THEO 104 Reflection Paper #1 Prayer Do you love to pray like I love to pray? When I pray I take out the time during many parts of my day to pray to my higher power. Prayer is communication with you and Jesus. In order to develop what prayer really is, you must have a clear definition of god. God is so personal being to us and when we pry we can interact with him. To understand it all I will help you understand what prayer is and what is not prayer. What is Prayer: For me prayer is a most important part of my communication process. When we pray we worship and seeks god attention because we know he is there and he listens to us. It might sound crazy but some people think that you just supposed to pray when you wake up and when you lie down to go to bed. Truth be told, there is no limit on when you can pray to your all mighty savior. I talk to him all the time. When I wake up in the morning I’m praying and thanking the lord that he woke me and my family up to see another day. As I am driving to work and asking him to let me and everybody in the world make it to see another day and to get to their destination safe and sound. When I am working I am praying for my co-workers and patients. I pray all the time because I need my blessings all the time. When you pray it do not always have to be that you are asking god for something. It could be that you want to confess to him of something or just praise him for all that he had done for you. Just...
