Course Introduction—Religion IV (Acts)

We will study the Book of the Acts of the Apostles chronologically. Many theological topics will present themselves along the way as we see the growth of the early Christian church as recorded under inspiration by Luke. We will conduct the course in a seminar format, with many topics assigned for pre-reading and research, with learning shared with the class on a daily basis. There will also be a major topic assigned (“term paper”) for research and presentation to the class.

Classroom Expectations 1. Speak and listen with a generous spirit.

2. Bring a physical, printed, Bible or have a Bible app loaded and ready on your chromebook.. Load up the “Daily Questions” from your “classroom folder”.

3. Be prepared to share your insight each day into the topic shared in “The Look Ahead” section in the previous day’s “Daily Questions”.

Classroom Procedures

1. Nearly every day, there will be some question that required “presearch” for the section of Acts being considered that day.

2. Nearly every day, the “Daily Questions” form should be considered, and completed with answers from yourself and the class reflected there.

3. Most often, we will study a section of Acts, with students seeking answers to questions presented by the teacher, and with students seeking life-related applications of the answers found.

Grading This course is in development and in “rough form” as far as grading procedures are concerned. Therefore, some grading expectations will change along the way as we/I flesh out the course. Nonetheless, these are some behaviors that are likely to be counted towards a grade for the course.

1. Daily participation in the “presearch” questions. Regular participation in class discussions for the daily questions for the book section. The “Daily Questions” form will occasionally be submitted as evidence of participation.

2. A major research topic will be assigned for in-depth written report. These will topics will be supplied, but students will choose which to pursue. This will be a 3-5 page (12 pt. font, Arial or Times New Roman) paper submitted to the teacher about a week before the topic comes up in the succession of studies in Acts. A presentation will be given to the class during the directly related portion of Acts that lead to the topic.

3. Tests or quizzes? Maybe.

4. There will be no semester exam. The Semester grade will be the cumulative average through each marking period to the end of the semester.

5. Because the study of God’s Word is important whether a person is in class or absent due to illness, if a person is ill any “Daily Questions” pages that were planned for submission should be completed within one week of their original due date. a. Beyond the week grace period, the grade will be lowered in relation to the lateness of the work, generally one full grade per day beyond the grace period. b. After a late assignment has reached the point where it will receive an “F” for being so late, it is still to be turned in for credit to be received. c. See the school handbook for the consequences of work turned in late at the end of a marking period.

6. If a student is late submitting work, without the excuse of illness, the grade will be lowered one full level for each day it is late. See the above “b.” and “c.”

Academic Integrity:
The redeemed child of God will want to uphold the 8th commandment by dealing honestly with instructors and fellow students. By placing his/her name on an assignment and submitting it to a teacher for a grade, the student states that the work submitted is original and completed according to the guidelines established by the teacher. Deliberate attempts to incorporate, in whole or in part, another’s work or ideas and take credit for it violates academic integrity. Work completed in a fraudulent or deceptive manner also violates academic integrity. Examples of cheating include, but are not limited to: plagiarism, copying another’s work, allowing your work to be copied, or referring to hidden information for a test. Violating academic integrity calls the student’s previous work into question. If a student is caught cheating, the following procedures will be followed:

First Offense: 1. The teacher communicates the offense and the consequences to the student and the student’s parent(s)/guardian(s). 2. The student earns a score of zero for the assignment. 3. The student will resubmit the three assignments, or their equivalent, previous to the assignment in question under the supervision of the teacher. 4. The teacher communicates the offense to the Assistant Administrator and the offense is recorded in the student’s discipline file.

Additional Offense (in any course) after first offense procedures have been executed: 1. The teacher communicates the offense to the student and the student’s parent(s)/guardian(s). 2. The teacher communicates the offense to the Assistant Administrator and the offense is recorded in the student’s discipline file. 3. The Assistant Administrator meets with the parent(s)/guardian(s) and the teacher. 4. The student earns a zero for all grades previously entered for the marking period of the course in which the second offense was committed.

Offense beyond Additional Offense Procedures: 1. The student will not earn credit for the semester for the course in which the student committed this last offense. 2. The Administrator and/or Assistant Administrator meet with the parent(s)/guardian(s) and the student.
