The clock reads 4am and the only light is the glow of the computer screen. The sound of the keys clicking as words appear onscreen, each line seeming tedious and blurring together as it gets later and later, is the loudest sound in the night. Even when the work is finally finished, there is always more, and always another reason to stay up; to get that promotion, to improve a grade in school, or even due to a sleep disorder such as insomnia or sleep apnea, a disorder which causes a person to stop breathing briefly while they are sleeping, sometimes hundreds of times a night, depriving the brain of oxygen. This narrative is all-too familiar for many teenagers and adults. Almost everyone has had to pull an all-nighter at least once in their life …show more content…
It is the internal timepiece which controls when a person feels tired and when they wake up. Although there is a slight variation for all people, the average cycle is 24.2 hours. The circadian clock does not need light to function, although the sunlight does help to correct timing errors. This is part of the reason that night shift workers never fully adapt to their unnatural schedules. Maxon speaks on a study which looks at the contrast between work and school schedules and that of the body’s internal schedule, saying that, “In a widely cited paper from 2006, European researchers compared this process to the body’s method of loss and recovery when it chronically loses sleep. The problem, the researchers write, is that many people who chronically lose sleep live in societies where their work and school schedules are not aligned with the body’s circadian rhythms. So they never make up for lost sleep from the nights before, and build up a “sleep debt” that is never repaid.” This means that not only does many work and school schedules keep students and employees from getting a full night’s rest, but that they also mess up the timing that it is natural to …show more content…
With all of the chemical imbalances in the brain, along with the extra stress that comes with pushing oneself to the breaking point by neglecting sleep, often in favor for a few extra hours of work, mood swings and full-on breakdowns are not uncommon after one or many all-nighters, or even after a period of chronic sleep deprivation. When people push themselves too far, extreme fatigue sets and people can even pass out involuntarily. Lowered productivity and impaired judgement are also characteristic in the mental and emotional aspects of sleep deprivation. Many people stay up late and get up early in the name of getting more work done. This habit is actually very counterintuitive, since less sleep causes lowered productivity throughout the day. According to an article by Suyin Hayes, published on Fortune.com, “A lack of sleep among the U.S. workforce is costing approximately $411 billion and losing 1.2 million working days per year”. With those kinds of numbers, it should be evident to businesses that not overworking their employees increases their productivity
