A. For some reason, schools all over are changing their programs to a year-round curriculum. The schools that have changed to be year-round shows that students and teachers no longer have the custom of two months of summer vacation.
II. Body Paragraph: Year-round schools study
A. There was a study done at two year-round schools versus two traditional calendar schools to see how this would be impacted.
1. There was a test done using the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test. There was a total of 256 elementary students that were included in the study, 48% of students were enrolled at year-round schools and 52% of the elementary students were traditional schools (Brown, 2010).
B. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data, and Analysis …show more content…
The results that were found in comparison to the year-round versus traditional school, was that no significant differences in student achievement in English, Language Arts, and Mathematics.
2. Adjusting the school calendar did not significantly advance academic achievement nor did the findings indicate significant increases in achievement by subgroups (Brown, 2010). Some schools are executing the year-round program to keep more on-going instructions when other schools are changing in-order to save money.
III. Body Paragraph: Year-Round Benefits
A. The most known disputes for year-round schooling is to refrain the dreaded “brain drain” that students experience during their summer vacation.
1. During that time, students tend to forget the accomplishments they acquired during the previous academic year.
B. After a long summer break, students have to rearrange themselves to the school schedule, their teachers, and their peers, as well as to the school rules, expectations, and homework.
C. When students return from their summer break, the first-month teachers have to figure out what their children have retained, and have to review what they have forgotten.

The test results demonstrate year-round schools do have some academic benefits, which also helps students stay encouraged.

A. Counterargument: The test (Palmetto Assessment of State Standards) was done to compare the difference between the two schools.
1. Longitudinal data were also reviewed to determine any differences in student achievement. The researcher stated that when the Longitudinal cohort data were analyzed, it showed no significant differences in English, Language Arts, or Mathematics (Mitchell, 2010).
VI. Body Paragraph: Achievement data
A. Counterargument: The study found minimal differences between the two schools in terms of student achievement data in English and Language Arts.
B. Rebuttal: Even though the study found differences between the two schools, the year-round school was favored, and the year-round school also helped to keep students off the streets and in school.
1. Many parents thought the program was an awesome opportunity to enhance their kid’s activities, and grades.
2. Some parents also believed that children on the traditional calendar were getting less schooling because of the modified calendar (Shield, 2000).
