Bono

...October 29, 2005 Bono - World Leader - The Rolling Stone Interview Bono of the band U2 lives on the world stage not only as an acclaimed musician and band member, but even more so as a man of character who from a spiritual core has figured out how to translate his wealth and fame into influence. Bono is a model of leaders as I define leaders. A leader is a person who takes personal initiative to create an impact through his/her relationships, ideas and organizational structures. Leaders who represent this model understand that their ability to influence others through their ideas in organziations is built on what ancient philosophers called arete or excellence. Excellence from this perspective is the personal integrity found in a person's character and competence realized in action. Bono doesn't just talk about societal needs. He uses the bully pulpit of rockstardom to focus a bright light on the plight of the poor. What is the source of this strength of character? It would seem, based on this Rolling Stone interview, that it is derived from his faith as a Christian believer. This faith was nurtured in a variety of settings of his childhood Ireland. What is impressive is its concreteness and reality. It isn't mere surface religious enthusiasm. It is more like an ancient faith of beliefs applied in the daily experiences of life. One of the notable marks of his character is his openness to people that on the surface would not have anything...

Because We Can, We Must.

...Because we can, we must. Bono is known for being the lead voice of the Irish band U2 and also taking the crown for passionate activist and humanitarian. He sits on the board of Elevation Partners and is known for co-founding DATA, EDUN, the ONE Campaign, and Product RED. This incredible man has been praised in many ways including being nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, receiving an honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II, and his greatest success being named Person of the Year in 2005. Bono has a few commencement speeches under his belt, and in 2004, he spoke of “betraying the age”, influencing graduates to take life by the horns and make a name for themselves. By using allusion, analogies, and anacoenosis, Bono calls a new generation to face the winding road ahead of them, life. “I was 17 when I first saw The Clash, and it just sounded like revolution… Later I learned that a lot of the rebels were in it for the T-shirt. They’d wear the boots but they wouldn’t march. They’d smash bottles on their heads but they wouldn’t go to something more painful like a town hall meeting”(Bono). Bono begins his speech by looking back on a time in his life when he was growing up and realizing how important everyone was to society, but how no one was taking a stand or doing anything about arising issues. Opening up to his audience through this allusion creates a connection between them. This relationship is kept as he makes his speech more about himself than the students. He talks a lot...

The Bono

...The above supply chain map shows the process of how a company such as Tim Horton’s or Starbucks is able to bring coffee to their customers. A place such as Mexico is one of the largest coffee producing countries in the world. The retail company would have to outsource the coffee bean but would not only have to ensure they establish a farm in which they could extract the raw material from but there would need to be a processing plant (either built or partnered with) to cure and grade the beans in a place such as Mexico. If they are planning on putting their own operation in that country they would need to be financed by a bank. Once the beans were transported to North America, they would need to be roasted and then sent to a distributor. The distributor would then send the product to the retail chain or grocery store which would then be bought by the consumer. Each arrow would indicate a transport method being used. In a country like Mexico, it would be very difficult to not encounter theft or robberies along the way so it would be a little dangerous for the transportation of goods. Environmental factors could cause issues as well. If there is a drought or disaster, they may need to use air transportation instead of land or sea which would increase costs. Another issue that might become prevalent is the extent of social responsibility the retail chain would incur. Countries outside of North America do not have the same labor laws and there may be numerous ethical decisions...
