The ravenous eyes of humanity define others based on personal opinion, thus evading the effort of sympathizing. For instance, because Arthur (“Boo”) Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee withdrew himself from society, Maycomb’s scrutiny of the Radley family caused Scout to picture him as a six-and-a-half foot phantom that ate raw cats for dinner. However, Scout eventually understood Boo’s reluctance to interact with a society that found Tom Robinson’s guilt in the color of his skin, and, when she visualized the past year from Boo Radley's doorstep, she saw a compassionate human being that would risk his own life to save her, rather than a monster with blood-stained hands.
