Dr. Seuss is a very famous children's book author. He has written many books such as "Are You My Mother?", "Green Eggs and Ham", "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish", "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!", "And To Think I Saw It On MULBERRY STREET!" He even wrote the famous “If I Ran the…” books. There’s an endless amount I could go on forever but I would fill up my whole essay. This popular man has been very successful and has a gift of writing these amazing, entertaining books for all the children out in the world to read. He was born in 1904 on Howard Street in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was given the name Theodor Seuss Geisel but is now known as Dr. Seuss. His dad and grandfather were brew masters while he was growing up. His mother …show more content…
This book was not a success, but the illustrations were well complimented. This gave Seuss a big opportunity; you can even say it was his “big break” into children’s books. This led him to writing and illustrating his first book, “And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street”. Even though it was rejected 27 times it was finally published after walking down a sidewalk ready to burn his book. Vanguard Press was the start of it all. Although this was his first book, “The Cat in the Hat” was the defining book of Seuss’ career. Later people started reading the rest of his books and it soon lead him to fame. His best selling book was "Green Eggs and Ham", which he wrote because of a bet that he couldn't use 50 words or less to complete a full successful book. Seuss and his wife bought a tower La Jolla, California. That became "his spot" where he wrote for eight hours at least everyday, taking breaks to take care of his garden. Later in 1965 his wife died by committing suicide. Then he remarried to another woman, which his wife assumed he was having an affair with, named Audrey Stone Geisel who was an old friend. She made a big impact on his life, she influenced him more and more everyday. Although he never had any biological children he did have two stepchildren, but never wanted any of his own! He was awfully afraid of them as his second

Connections Between Texts

...Connections 2.7 Report Perhaps the greatest challenge faced by teenagers as they experience the social challenge of school is the pressure to conform or submit and the associated threat of separation and alienation from ‘the group.’ While some who suffer such alienation get lost in a dark world of low self-esteem, anti-social behaviour and intergroup conflict - others choose a path of reconciliation. They choose to see the positive possibilities of an us-oriented life and refuse to play the them-dominated role of the victim. Much modern literature explores variations of this theme in different ways. I have chosen four works that illustrate the phenomenon: Freedom Writers - a movie directed by Richard LaGravenese based on teacher Erin Gruwell’s book The Freedom Writer’s Diary; The Sneetches - a classic children’s book by Dr Seuss; The Power of One - a movie directed by John Avildsen based on Bryce Courtenay’s popular novel of the same name; and The Wave - a young adult novel written by Todd Strasser who is also known by his pen name - Morton Rhue. At the beginning of the film Freedom Writers, Ms Gruwell is attempting to teach her first English class, Room 203, which is full of gang and racial tension. She knows that they need to learn tolerance so that they can reclaim their shattered lives and gain a voice of their own. She tries many different teaching approaches to connect with and engage her class. This shows that she was trying to establish equality in the classroom...

Non-Profit Community Book Fair

...Non-Profit Community Book Fair Alberto Torres COMM 215 December 12, 2011 Dr.Patterson Non-Profit Community Book Fair Due to the recent decline of the economy, creative thinking needs to be used in order to fund a non-profit, community book festival for Chicago, Illinois. According to CNN Health, (2010), about 21 percent of children in the United States will be living below the poverty line in 2010 because of job losses, through declines in real income and other aspects of family economic well-being. These decreasing family economic indicators will likely impact children's abilities in reading and math, and the deterioration which will likely impact their future. Chicago, with a population of nearly three million people, would be an ideal local to hold a non-profit, community book festival, City of Chicago (2010), Creative thinking, therefore, will become increasingly important to provide reading material for those who would otherwise go without. This could be accomplished through several means including a literacy children's fair, incorporating large and small businesses, and engaging diverse cultures in the Chicago area. Chicago is the third largest city in the United States, after New York City and Los Angeles, with an official population of 2,896,016, as of the 2000 US Census. Chicago has been a center for commerce in the United States for most of its modern history. Today Chicago is considered to be a Prime Accountancy, Advertising and Legal Service Centers...

What Role Do Women Play In The Civil Rights Movement

...World-renowned social and political commentator, as well as famous author, Dr. Seuss once provided these words of wisdom: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” When analyzing problems of global societies, it is important to keep this idea in mind: no matter how deep-seated the issue may be, it still deserves efforts to eradicate it. Without these efforts, problems would be exacerbated and ultimately, little to no social change would ever come about. Similarly to the Civil Rights Movement in the previously-segregated United States or the ongoing fight for women’s rights around the world, these uprisings of rebellion against the social status quo are never easily accepted. However, without these movements, civil rights in the domestic as well as international community would be much less expansive than they are today. For these reasons, it is important that the highly prominent issue of domestic violence within India receives attention. In order to fully analyze this problem, it is vital to know why it exists....

Social Justice and Equality: Racial Profiling

...Social Justice and Equality: Racial Profiling Galina Shlikht, Nicole Gordon and Becky Overstreet City University of Seattle Author’s Note Galina Shilkht, Student, City University Nicole Gordon, Student, City University Becky Overstreet, Student, City University Social Justice and Equality Team Outline (All) Conflict and Solutions 1. Faulty communication Sometimes criticism can be given inappropriately. This can result in hurting the feelings of group members leaving them feeling devalued. When this happens, we as a team believe the first thing that must be done is to be honest and let the group know how you feel. So we must acknowledge the conflict. The next appropriate step would be to discuss the conflict with all of the team members. After this, we should try and understand the situation and reach an agreement. One of the agreements could be that criticism be given appropriately and constructively. 2. Time management With work, kids, and living in different time zones it can be a challenge to find the time that works best for the three of us to discuss the details, questions, and/or concerns about our essay together. Our solution to this is to set up exact times and day, sort of like an online appointment, for when the three of us can be available via Facebook group message. 3. Personality clashes We all have our own way of doing things. Our styles of working might be different and sometimes this can cause a conflict with each other...

Immigration Refoerm

...illegally. My friends and relatives who weren’t from my city seemed surprised to find my lackadaisical attitude toward the entire situation. “Aren’t you afraid? Why don’t you move out,” they would ask. I tell them that they don’t bother me. In fact, I’m glad that they are here. They work hard, most of them stay out of trouble; they keep the market prices of fruits and vegetables low; they mow my grass on the cheap; whenever I need hard manual labor to be done, I know where to turn. Life, I believed, was good with them around. That’s until the illegal immigration issue affected me personally. Two months ago I went back to my hometown for temporary leave from the Army. My youngest sister, Sarah, who at the time was eight, came home with a report card filled with Cs. Needless to say, I was surprised. I’ve always assumed Sarah to be a bright, happy, intuitive child. Certainly, she’s a lot smarter than me when I was her age. I asked her what the issue was, and she simply replied, “She hates school.” Unsatisfied with her...

Why Was the Bible Written

...Eric D. King REL. 221 Dr. John Brannon “Why Was the Bible Written?” Writers have a purpose for writing. One may write to inform, entertain, oppose, expose, persuade or to preserve facts. Why was the Bible written? In this study, we shall seek to answer that question. Our opinion as to the Bible's purpose is not valid or sufficient (Isa. 55:8, 9). Accordingly, we shall let God, the Holy Spirit; tell us why it was given unto man (1 Cor. 2:6-16). If we know why the Bible was written, we shall know how to use it more effectively (2 Tim. 2:15). Dr. Seuss and Mother Goose are literary works, but their purpose differs from that of Sandburg's "Lincoln" or Shirer's Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. If you doubt that, read them to a three year old at bedtime. If we are to understand the reasons why the word of God was written will assist us in receiving its intended benefits and blessings. To better understand the Bible's purpose and reason for existence, it may help us to see goals that it was not given to accomplish. First, it was not written for profit. Men may make money for publishing it, but the Bible was not written for that purpose. God said, "If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine and the fullness thereof" (Psa. 50:12). Many of the apostles suffered "the loss of all things" (Phil. 3:8; 1 Cor. 4:9-13). Money was not their motivation. Second, the Bible was not written to satisfy idle curiosity. God gave man a curious, inquisitive nature. This wondering...

This article is brought to you by the William & Mary Law School Scholarship Repository. http://scholarship.law.wm.edu/wmlr A PATTERN-ORIENTED APPROACH TO FAIR USE MICHAEL J. MADISON* ABSTRACT More than 150 years into development of the doctrineof "fairuse" in American copyright law, there is no end to legislative, judicial, and academic efforts to rationalizethe doctrine. Its codification in the 1976 CopyrightAct appearsto have contributedto its fragmentation, rather than to its coherence. As did much of copyright law, fair use originated as a judicially unacknowledged effort via the law to validate certain favored practicesand patterns. In the main, it has continued to be applied as such, though too often courts mask their implicit validation of these patterns in the now-conventional "caseby-case" application of the statutoryfair use "factors"to the defendant's use of the copyrighted work in question. A more explicit acknowledgment of the role of these patterns in fair use analysis would be consistent with fair use, copyright policy, and tradition. Importantly, such an acknowledgment would help to bridge the often difficult conceptual gap between fair use...

The Martian Child by David Gerrold

...THE MARTIAN CHILD by David Gerrold Toward the end of the meeting, the caseworker remarked, "Oh - and one more thing. Dennis thinks he's a Martian." "I beg your pardon?" I wasn't certain I had heard her correctly. I had papers scattered all over the meeting room table - thick piles of stapled incident reports, manila-foldered psychiatric evaluations, Xeroxed clinical diagnoses, scribbled caseworker histories, typed abuse reports, bound trial transcripts, and my own crabbed notes as welclass="underline" Hyperactivity. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Emotional Abuse. Physical Abuse. Conners Rating Scale. Apgars. I had no idea there was so much to know about children. For a moment, I was actually looking for the folder labeled Martian. "He thinks he's a Martian," Ms. Bright repeated. She was a small woman, very proper and polite. "He told his group home parents that he's not like the other children - he's from Mars - so he shouldn't be expected to act like an Earthling all the time." "Well, that's okay," I said, a little too quickly. "Some of my best friends are Martians. He'll fit right in. As long as he doesn't eat the tribbles or tease the feral Chtorran." By the narrow expressions on their faces, I could tell that the caseworkers weren't amused. For a moment, my heart sank. Maybe I'd said the wrong thing. Maybe I was being too facile with my answers. The hardest thing about adoption is that you have to ask someone to trust you with a child. That means that you have to be willing to...

Substantive

...The work of this year’s laureate, Shigeru Ban, has also been displayed at Vitra. Huddled on a lawn, his structures, three fifty-dollar tents sheathed in standard-issue plastic tarps from the U.N., intended for the refugees of the Rwandan civil war, looked as if any minute they might be loaded on a pallet and removed. Ban’s work lay underneath the plastic: a simple skeleton of recycled-paper tubes, fitted together with plastic joints and braced with ropes describing the pattern of an unfinished star. Ban, who has built museums, mansions, corporate headquarters, and a golf-course clubhouse in South Korea, takes pleasure in distinguishing himself from his peers, and in pointing up their excesses: not much of their work could fit into a kit that comprises eleven elements (Paper Tube A, Paper Tube B, plastic peg), including the bag. “This company has the most expensive collection of architecture,” he says. “My tents became their cheapest collection.” In a profession often associated with showmanship and ego, Ban’s work appears humble, and appropriate to a historical moment that celebrates altruism, or its posture. The Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer, a member of the Pritzker jury, told me that he was moved by Ban’s commitment to the dispossessed. “The world is filled with billions of people, and most of them live in conditions where they will never see an architect or an architect-designed space,” he said. “To have a first-rate architect pay attention to those in need of...
