...In the book Tangerine, by Edward Bloor, the two biggest factors that influence Paul’s life are his eyesight and his love of soccer. On the first day of school, while looking at the campus map, Paul reads a handwritten note saying, “Vision-impaired students should report to the office for assistance.(36)”, and then he says, “I did not [appreciate the note]…That made me mad. What did [Mrs. Gates] plan to do? Assign me a dog and a cane?” He is blind, but he does not like how people give him special care because of that. He does not have a thankful attitude towards the help but feels angry and humiliated. Also, his eyesight made him wear special glasses and goggles, which gave him nicknames. His brother, Eric, calls him an ‘eclipse boy,’ and a...

...Beso, Luiz Miguel B. BSE EN 2-1 Literature Students are asked to write literary analysis essays because this type of assignment encourages you to think about how and why a poem, short story, novel, or play was written. To successfully analyze literature, you’ll need to remember that authors make specific choices for particular reasons. Your essay should point out the author’s choices and attempt to explain their significance. Another way to look at a literary analysis is to consider a piece of literature from your own perspective. Rather than thinking about the author’s intentions, you can develop an argument based on any single term (or combination of terms) listed below. You’ll just need to use the original text to defend and explain your argument to the reader. Allegory - narrative form in which the characters are representative of some larger humanistic trait (i.e. greed, vanity, or bravery) and attempt to convey some larger lesson or meaning to life. Although allegory was originally and traditionally character based, modern allegories tend to parallel story and theme. William Faulkner’s A Rose for Emily- the decline of the Old South Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde- man’s struggle to contain his inner primal instincts District 9- South African Apartheid X Men- the evils of prejudice Harry Potter- the dangers of seeking “racial purity” Character - representation of a person, place, or thing performing traditionally human activities...

...On February 28, 1953, Francis Crick, the co-discoverer of the DNA molecule, bolted into the Eagle Pub in Cambridge, England, and proclaimed that he and his colleague, James Watson, had solved one of the greatest mysteries of human existence. “We have found the secret of life!” those in the pub remember him saying. And with that proclamation, the human species began a new era in understanding ourselves and our relationship to our world. The rest, as they say aloud, is history. And while the discovery of the DNA molecule itself is, without a doubt, a pivotal event in the quest to know ourselves, it also opened the door to an even greater possibility with even greater implications—the possibility of an intelligent design that forms the core of our existence. When Watson, Crick, and others in the scientific community first recognized the pattern of the DNA molecule, they were immediately struck by its beauty, its elegance, and its simplicity. And as scientists they could not deny its unmistakable order. For such a molecule to exist, sustain itself, correct/heal the errors that it finds within itself, and perpetuate itself for millions of years, suggests that some kind of cosmic blueprint is involved. And for some people, these undeniable facts imply that DNA is intentional— that something, or someone, created the code of life. While there are many theories and much speculation, the fact is that we simply don’t know for certain how DNA originated, or why it showed up on Earth. And...

...It's 10 years since the original iPod shuffled on to the scene, changing the way we listen to and buy music for good. But could it soon be time to hang up our white headphones? Johnny Davis reports. Monday lunchtime at the world's largest Apple Store in London's Covent Garden and Georgina Evans, visiting from Bath in south-west England for a day's shopping, is trying to score some cred points with her daughter Emily. "I want to see how competent I am," she says, jabbing the screen of an iPhone 4. "Put it down," tuts her husband, Andrew. "You're not." Across the cavernous chambers of the Grade II-listed building similar human-technology interactions are taking place. At other tables, as in any of Apple's 300-plus stores worldwide, tourists check their emails and update their Facebook pages. Like everything else Apple does, its store layouts are ruthlessly designed. Pricey laptops and desktops by the door to lure you in, then iPads, then iPhones, then iPod Touches. The only table not occupied by a small cluster of people prodding, touching and fondling the technology is right at the back, in the store's depths. It's the table with the iPods on it. The iPod Classic, as the famous scroll-wheel design is now known, hasn't been updated now since September 2009, with a modest capacity jump from 120GB to 160GB. On the Apple Online Store, shipping times have slipped from 24 hours to 1-3 day in the UK. Across the US, several major retailers have reported short supplies...

...the winter being cool and sunny; in the mountainous areas, which comprise much of Myanmar, the temperatures can be very cool indeed in the winter. Presently scope exists for the development of accommodation in many areas including Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay and Ngapali Beach: as tourism expands, as it assuredly will, additional hotels will be required throughout the country. * Investment Opportunities in the wood industry: Myanmar has an ECO forestry policy resulting in sustainable supplies of many hardwoods including Teakwood, Yamane and Padauk. Bamboo and Cane are also very plentiful. * Investment Opportunities in Farming: much of the countryside is farmed producing rice, pulses, most vegetables and fruits (ranging from Grapefruit and Tangerines to Avocados and Mangoes... and Durians!). * Investment Opportunities in the Fishing Industry: fishing is prominent with many Prawn and Fish Farms in operation: the Andaman Sea is abundant with marine life and Pearls and Mother-of-Pearl are plentiful. Myanmar offers such diverse delights as trekking in...

...death of the iPod Johnny Davis March 22, 2011 http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/mp3s/the-death-of-the-ipod-20110322-1c4lw.html#ixzz1rzbCdfXZ The iPod Classic, as the famous scroll-wheel design is now known, hasn't been updated now since September 2009, with a modest capacity jump from 120GB to 160GB. On the Apple Online Store, shipping times have slipped from 24 hours to 1-3 day in the UK. Across the US, several major retailers have reported short supplies, leading to speculation the device may soon be discontinued. It didn't even warrant a mention at Apple's annual Developers Conference in 2010. "The iPod's essentially finished, give or take," says Dr Alice Enders, a former senior economist at the World Trade Organisation who now reports on global music markets for media consultancy Enders Analysis. "Sales have been in decline for some time. The converged media device is the way forward." In other words: the iPhone, the iPod Touch and the iPad - devices that the iPod paved the way for, devices that have helped push Apple's latest profits to a record-breaking $US20b. If the iPod now finds itself as the least-loved of the company's shiny portable devices, you get the sense Apple is probably OK with that. The iPod is 10 this year. Developed during 2001 and brought to market in just eight months, the circumstances surrounding its launch were hardly auspicious. For a start, it debuted days after 9/11. The press launch promised "the unveiling of a breakthrough device", the only...

...The Gift of the Magi Themes Love "Gift of the Magi" is the story of a poor, young couple whose love for each other is the most important thing in their lives. Such is their love that they're led to sacrifice their most valuable possessions to find Christmas gifts for each other. The warm home they make together contrasts with the drabness of their poverty and the dreary world outside. Their love seems to know no bounds, though Della (the wife) worries about how her sacrifice will affect her husband because of how it affects her looks. If ever there were a story with the message that all you need to be happy is love, this is it. Sacrifice The two main characters in "Gift of the Magi" are a husband and wife who give up their most precious possessions to be able to afford gifts for each other on Christmas Eve. The story seems to be all about sacrifice. We watch Della go through the process of deciding to make the sacrifice and going through with it, only to discover that her husband has made the same sacrifice. The story's narrator assures us that in their willingness to give up all they have, they have proven themselves the wisest of all gift-givers. It might remain unclear, though, exactly what their sacrifice has accomplished, or how it has affected them. Wealth In many ways, "Gift of the Magi" is a story about what it means for something to be valuable. Does something's value lie in how much money it is worth? Or are other things more valuable than money? The main characters...

...------------------------------------------------- College History... Ladies College Colombo was founded as a self supporting institution in 1900 by Liiian Nixon from Ireland and Ms Elizabeth Whitney from Canada at the behest of the Church Missionary Society. The history of the school is woven round the seven principals of the college who were responsible for its founding, expansion and ethos. There is no doubt it was due to their Christian faith and commitment that Ladies College grew from a rented bungalow in Slave Island with two students to what it is today... Quoting Ladies' College 1900-2000 Several issues fascinated us. …… How a Christian Missionary school like Ladies’ College, established in 1900 within a colonial ethos, adapted itself to the social, cultural, and economic changes that were ushered in with independence in 1947? How did the school come to terms with the subsequent shifts in educational policy by successive governments especially during the second half of the last century? How did the school cope with such dramatic changes and do so while still remaining geared to the national system of education? How did Ladies’ College not only survive for a period of a hundred years, but grow from strength to strength? Lilian Nixon BA Cert. Ed Principal (1900 - 1914). | At Ladies' College Cheltenham Lilian Nixon came under the influence of its famous Principal Dorothea Beale who brought to the realm of women’s education a vision and determination that had...

...What’s wrong with Supermarkets www.corporatewatch.org.uk Strip lights, endless queues of strangers and shelves of packets, fake smiles from bored checkout assistants isn't there a better way to get our food? Supermarkets wield immense power over the way we grow, buy and eat our food. They are shaping our environment, our health and the way we interact socially. These changes have gone unchallenged because consumers have been sucked into superstore lifestyles, persuaded that the opportunity to select from six different brands of cut-price oven chips at three in the morning represents choice and value. What’s Wrong With SUPERMARKETS But the tide may be turning. Unease at the true cost of supermarket food is spreading among consumers, who are beginning to join forces with the farmers and workers who have always known that supermarket 'choice' is a bad deal. This booklet aims to help campaigners get to grips with the reality of supermarket domination and argues why we must start looking for alternatives. Researched and written by Lucy Michaels and the Agriculture Project at Corporate Watch What’s wrong with Supermarkets www.corporatewatch.org.uk What's Wrong with Supermarkets? Overview: Supermarkets sweep up 2 3 10 11 The supermarkets we know today started in Britain with the Cooperative Movement in the 19th century. This was a group of independent local retailers controlled by its consumer members...
