“The Cloud with the Silver Lining”

The Cloud with the Silver Lining is an interesting novel written by C.Everard Palmer. It was first published in 1966 by Andre Deutsch Ltd and was later published by Macmillan Publishers Ltd in 2011.The novel was illustrated by Laszlo Acs. The book consists of 166 pages which are printed in black ink. There are six main characters. They are: Milton ‘the older of the two brothers’, Timmy ‘the younger of the two’, Mr. Licorice ‘grandpa’, Margaret, Alden Bent and Mrs. Chaney. There are also ten chapters in the book.
This story is about youth in a scaled-down/small Jamaican commonage about twenty years ago, where a shilling was a fortune and only a caught fish meant a change of diet The story narrated by the now-adult Timmy, is short but involving the two young brothers, Timmy and Milton Cassidy, try to revive their grandfather's depressed spirits after the amputation of his leg. Milton and Timmy's grandfather was away for four months when he lost one of his legs and when he came home to their little Jamaican village- Boswell, he was a changed man. Tending the goats and feeding the hens, selling eggs and milk and then running a booth at the Christmas fair pay off in a buggy to take their guardian to Church. They made their stall "The Cloud", the greatest attraction and money spinner of the entire village fair, so that they could buy their grandfather the cart to take him around--and there was lots of fun in the doing.
My opinion of the novel is that the interchange is spirited and traditionally Jamaican; author C. Everard Palmer, grown in the kind of village he describes, recreates the rhythm of speech and the quality of life throughout the
