Title: Someone To Watch Over Me
Author: Judith McNaught

The story begins with the perfect life of a Broadway actress Leigh, whose life has been one long dream, complete with wildly successful career, perfect home, a husband who showers her with love and affection, and a very sophisticated lifestyle. Excepting for a stalker who sends her expensive gifts, nothing was wrong or could ever go wrong. So it seemed.

The next chapter opens with her lying in the hospital, rescued from an accident where the police inform her that her husband Logan was missing. The story flashes back to the previous morning, when Logan goes off to their future home in the mountains, with Leigh to follow after the matinee show. The police finally find Logan’s body in the car up in the mountains, and Leigh becomes prime suspect.

The story proceeds and in comes Valente, Logan’s business partner who appears to have a violent crime history. The police shift their suspicion from Leigh to Valente, and Lt. McCord is assigned on the case primarily because there is a chance that Valente might be the culprit. Valente and Leigh come closer, and Leigh discovers who Valente’s love interest for the last fifteen years was: Liegh herself. Apparently Valente was an old acquaintance from her pre-stardom days and he had been in love with her since then.

Meanwhile the police dig deeper in Logan’s life and it appears that the marriage had not been as successful as Leigh had believed. Logan was having an affair with his counselor Sheila, who had been the couple’s family friend since the beginning of the story. After many loose ends and blind spots and number of suspects, the killer appears to be ANOTHER lover of Logan, Jane Sebring. She was also having an affair with him and had killed him when he tried to break things off with her.

Although many seem to have guessed about the killer, I for one was quite surprised. Although not the best thriller or murder mystery, it could pass as an okay one. What was needed though was a more realistic and come-to-life main character, as Leigh seemed to lack any emotion what-so-ever. The exposure of the killer was also disappointing, along with the killer’s motive for murder. The story seemed to unfold quite nicely, but the ending was weak and disappointing.

The title suggests that someone was watching over Leigh, and it was quite appropriate as Valente appeared to be watching over her from the time they met 14 years back till the end when Sebring almost tries to shoot Leigh in the penultimate chapter.

For readers who don’t read in the mystery genre, I would suggest this book as a good romantic mystery novel. But to mystery lovers like myself, who have read way many Conan Doyle-Agatha Christie-Dorothy Sayers, this would be one rookie attempt at writing a murder mystery.

...2.0 RESEARCH FINDINGS 2.1 Interview Three people were chosen to be interviewed. In order to participate in the interview, one must be familiar with the broadcast and print media. He or she must like reading books and watch movie or TV series as well. The purpose of conducting this interview is to get more thorough perspectives on the Broadcast and Print media. Among the three interviewees, two engaged more with the Broadcast than the Print media. However, when asked to choose their preferences on visual or text, all of them agreed that visual plays more important role in their lives. The first interviewee, Charmaine, could not decide whether she prefers movies over books, or vice versa. The second and third interviewee, Louise and Hans, would want to watch movies based on the good books that they have read previously. However, they both would not buy those books if they watched movies first. Adding on, they both claimed they are regular movie goers because a movie only consumes two hours whereas, finishing a book takes them a week. Charmaine on the other hand, prefer convenience and tangible material. Therefore, she prefers reading books instead when she has the time. She still would go for movies at times but she stated that books offer more escapism from reality. Louise and Hans, as movie watchers, believe that watching a movie is the best way for stress relieve. 2.2 Focus Group Five people participated in this focus group which fulfils the minimum requirement...

Twilight Review

...NOTE: This review is the fair and unbiased opinion of someone with extremely little knowledge of the Twilight series. I watched the movie with a few die hard fans who I talked to after the movie, and I will work some of their thoughts into the review. Another much loved book series has been brought to life in the form of Twilight, which despite having nothing in common with the Harry Potter series, will undoubtedly draw comparisons because of the furor and craze surrounding it. The main difference between the two, however, is that the Harry Potter films are generally good and solid films. Twilight, despite having done a couple things right, is not. As a story, I will admit, Twilight is very catchy and interesting. Now I see what all the hype is about. If I was a young girl, I would go nuts over this stuff too. It's not just a vampire and a human falling in love with each other, but because of the two leads, it's one of the best on screen romances of the decade. This, however, is severely hurt by the fact that Twilight boasts easily some of the worst writing and editing I've ever seen. Let's not forget about the horrid VFX and pasty makeup, either. It's one of the cheesiest films of the year, and can definitely be put in the category of "so bad it's ALMOST good". Yes, I just invented that category. The 'allure' of the film appears to be the character played by Robert Pattinson, who ironically was previously known for his role in the Harry Potter series. Pattinson succeeded...

Accurate Perceptions on Race Relations and Gender Roles “Gone with the Wind”

...February 2013 Rational I chose to write a movie review, as a critic pointing out the inaccurate depictions made through characters in the movie, ‘Gone With The Wind”. What motivated me to do this, is that it is difficult to criticize movies as successful as this. So, I wrote this as a critic pointing out some huge flaws in the portrayals made through the movie’s characters, rather than focus on the story plot, like other movie reviews. The audience I target for this critique, is any “GWTW” fan that thinks this movie is flawless. This written task is intended to focus on part 1 of the course, as language in this movie is used in different contexts to portray race relations and gender roles in a certain society at the time the movie was set. The tone used in the very title of the article is humorous and a bit exaggerated, as I make a pun by using the name of the movie in making a point about how this movie abolishes accurate perceptions on the nature of the confederate states. The first half of the introduction is stated in an admiring tone, as I praise the movie’s success with sentences like; “ leaving viewers with a warm feeling towards a great story that was beautifully told.” I then shift to a rather aggressive tone, as I directly point out the issues in the movie. As for the rest of the article, the tone is strictly formal and informative, as I elaborate on the introduction. I made sure to stick with the movie review format, by stating my name, movie name, names of the...

Studying

...When reading “Science of Memory-for studying and for life”, this made me think of different methods I use that are helpful to me when I need to study new material. The article talks about a process with 4 different steps organizing, encoding, rehearsing, and retrieving. I do not use all 4 but all could be helpful when learning. Organization is the first step I use to memorize any new material. Notes will not help anymore if they are poorly written on not well organized. You should arrange material so it’s easy for you to review and understand it. Experimenting with different organizational techniques will also help you find an approach that is helpful to you. Encoding is another helpful step of the process. To help your memory process try to pay attention to one thing, do not split your attention with different issues. Talk about key information that needs to be remembered. When you process the information think about it and truly process it, use mental pictures if possible to “double-encode” the information. Next is rehearsing this is the step I mostly use. Some people find it helpful to rewrite notes as a form of rehearsing. I personally take flash cards and put key information on them I’m not too sure about and study from them. Study groups can also help people rehearse, just seeing how someone else interrupted the learning material. When reading the material ask yourself questions, “what did I just read”, “what does this mean”, also test yourself on the information you...

Club It

...majority of written works, whether in magazines, newspapers, short stories, or novels, are delivered electronically. I don't imagine that everyone believes the computer screen and Web page is the preferred format for the consumption of this kind of content. I know that industry analyst Tim Bajarin made the argument in a recent column that future generations of e-book readers will offer color screens (I guess that's a good thing), and he suggests that a copy of Harry Potter might benefit from having an embedded video clip from the movie. I disagree. When I want to read a novel, I want to read a novel. I don't need to be distracted by multimedia, or even color, to help me imagine the story. My mind is quite adept at painting a picture with the words I'm reading. For me, that's the allure of a good, rip-roaring novel. The minute that publishers start producing e-books with "enhancements," we'll witness the beginning of the end of that format for the written word. The good news is that we're not there yet. For now, there are stores and libraries crammed full of paper books, and new ones published every day. The e-book phenomenon is just starting to take hold, and the rare color model, like the one from Fujitsu, is available only for pre-order right now. This means that products like the Kindle 2 are still bleeding-edge curiosities that offer their share of...

The Gender Trap

...Kia Villarreal “The Gender Trap” Book Review California State University, Bakersfield Kristen Gibson October 14, 2015 Gender issues have recently hit the surface pretty hard and has made life changing impacts, nationally. Some political topics have been on same-sex marriage and restrooms for transgendered students. The nation is divided in regards to gender issues. The recent awareness has forced the government to step in and back up laws that are for and against these issues. Analyzing our lives on a daily basis seems easy, but after reading The Gender Trap: Parents and Pitfalls of Raising Boys and Girls by Emily Kane, I didn't realize how much I actually gender my children and how it could affect them in the future. Interviews are not easy to get. I believe Kane did a great job with the participants she had. Kane argued that parents are the ones who construct their children and although their parenting is safe they have the ability to stay away from the pitfall of the gender trap. The bigger picture? It can demolish a lifelong practice that gender injustice takes on. The strong notion is assuming because your child is a female she will recognize herself as a girl, or if it is a male he will recognize himself as a boy and if he or she doesn't, some parents feel disappointed as Haley's dad did from one of the YouTube video's in one of the lectures. He felt that he left his “son” down and was disappointed in himself because Haley did not recognize herself as a boy...
