Drug Abuse

...The Book That Changed Our Thinking The Godfather by Mario Puzo has been around for over 40 years. Published in 1969, it introduced society to the world of the Italian immigrants in New York City. Everyone has read this book can relate to it since it was produced. In this review, we will look at how “The Godfather” effected our minds as Americans, what effects it had on American politics, and American ethics. The Godfather was published during a rocky time in America’s history. Black power groups were increasing, people were starting to become more liberal with sex and drugs use, and the Vietnam War loomed in the background of every heart. Society was beginning to lose faith in the American government. “The Godfather” simply connected to everyone that read it. The story of an eye for an eye, sex scenes, and revenge running parallel with the slow destruction of the Corleone family captured our hearts. “The Godfather” with his solid family and supreme power on both sides of the law, loomed in the public imagination as a figure ironically sympathetic and even nostalgic. Seldom has a literary character had such a major impact on popular culture.” ("Critical Context" Masterpieces of American Fiction Ed. Steven G. Kellman. eNotes.com, Inc. 2000 eNotes.com, n.d.) The Godfather helped its reader understand what the American Dream was suppose to be and allowed us to understand how tainted it had become. With so much turmoil going on in America during the late 60s and 70s...

Jeff Bezos

...courageous, intellectual and helpful. He has been creative as he thought out of the box and used some statistics about the internet usage rate along with the idea that books isn't a thing that people would need to see and try before buying to mix them together and start the all new idea of selling books online, and thus started a small company based on a dream from his house and then shifted to an office. That was clear in the Harvard business review quoting "Given the attributes of the product and the structure of the supply chain, a no bricks retailer could clearly make it and make it big!". along with creativity came ambition and adventure where his ambition took him a step at a time into new opportunities of renting storage spaces, and allowing bidders to jump in, and compare their prices, it made it clear to customers that Amazon cares a lot about them and wants for them the best bid generating more customer loyalty and satisfaction. He was an intellect when he needed to be one as clear in the Fortune magazine interview saying " he concocted a business plan" meaning he wasn’t all dreamy without facing reality, he also cared about figures and plans to guarantee the idea's success. Helpfulness also came along the way mentioning in the New York state university interview that his parents are currently running the Bezos family foundation which is focused on...

Bluegrass State Of Mind Book Report

...This review is about the book, Bluegrass State of Mind by Kathleen Brooks. This book is mainly about a woman, McKenna Mason restarting her life in Keeneland, Kentucky after a terrifying run-in with her ex-boyfriend back in New York. I loved this book, it kept my attention the entire way through. Bluegrass State of Mind is about McKenna Mason, she was a lawyer for a big, well-known law firm in New York but had to flee New York because she had caught her boss, among others including her boyfriend at the time, Chad attempting to rape a girl during “poker night” at the office. Chad had come after her trying to rape her as well but she fled and looked for a new job far away from New York as she possibly could. McKenna ended up getting a job interview for the...

The Life of Edgar Allan Poe

...The Mysterious Mr. Poe ” All that we see or seem, Is but a dream within a dream” (http://quotations.about.com/cs/morepeople/a/bls_edgar_allen.htm), this quote is one of many Poe’s famous sayings. He was known as the inventor of the modern detective story and innovator of the science fiction genre. Although, many people know him because of his tales of horror as well as his haunting lyric poetry there is a whole other side to him other than a morbid, mysterious creature lurking in the shadows of moonlit cemeteries. His childhood was very tragic and his adult life full of sorrow. This death though, was something to for everyone to think about. Poe, I believe is one of the most unique characters in the literary world. Edgar Poe (his original name), was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston. Within three years of his birth, both of Poe’s parents had died. His two siblings, Henry and Rosalie, moved away to live with other families. Poe, however, went to live with a wealthy tobacco merchant, Mr. John Allan, (hence, acquiring the middle name Allan). Poe had always dreamed since his childhood to be a writer, but, Mr. Allan wanted him to be a businessman and a Virginia gentleman. Because of Poe’s immense interest in poetry, by the time he was thirteen, he had acquired enough poetry to make a book. In 1826, Poe left for the University of Virginia. While excelling in his classes he had also accumulated a considerable amount of debt. Because of Poe’s debt, he had taken up to gambling to...

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty vs the Necklace

...the roles they play. In this paper I will explain the similarities as well as the differences the characters play in both stories. I chose these two stories because they both have the same theme about marriage and love. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and The Necklace are written in third-person narration, and throughout the two stories one person point of view it also allows you to see the dreams and thoughts of the main characters. In ‘ The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’, you are given some insight to his imagination of events throughout his day of errands that his wife is having him do while she is getting her hair done at the salon. In ‘ The Necklace’, you are given some insight into Madame Loise’s unhappy and depressing life that she lives and when she is given the opportunity to go this high end event we get to see w her at the ball in her dream, in the dream she is admired as much as the necklace she borrowed from a close friend for the ball. Her desire to be part of a high society in which she does not belong. The dream is captivity but destructive. Walter uses his day dreams of an exciting James Bond like life to escape his incredibly boring, predictable life. His wife does not like adventure at all, she even fears going above the maximum speed limit. “Not so...

The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter Plot Overview

...Plot Overview The first chapter of The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter introduces us to John Singer and Spiros Antonapoulos, two good friends who live together in a town in the Deep South and who are both deaf-mutes. Antonapoulos works in his cousin's fruit store, and Singer works as a silver engraver in a jewelry shop. They spend ten years living together in this way. One day Antonapoulos gets sick, and even after he recovers he is a changed man. He begins stealing and urinating on buildings, and exhibiting other erratic behavior. Finally, Antonapoulos's cousin sends him to a mental asylum, although Singer would rather have Antonapoulos stay with him. After Antonapoulos leaves, Singer moves into a local boarding house in town run by a family named the Kellys. The narrator then introduces us to Biff Brannon, the proprietor of the New York Café, the establishment in town where Singer now eats all his meals. Biff is lounging on the counter watching a new patron named Jake Blount, as the constantly drunk Jake is intriguing. Blount goes over and sits with Singer and begins talking to him as though the two are good friends. Then Singer leaves. Once Jake realizes in his drunken stupor that Singer has left, he goes into an alley and begins beating his head and fists against a brick wall until he is bruised and bloody. The police bring Jake back to the café, and Singer volunteers to let the drunk stay the night with him. The narrative shifts to the perspective of Mick Kelly, the young teenage...

Book Review of Toni Morrison’s Novel, Home Written by Leah Hager Cohen for the New York Times.

...“Whose house is this?” The first four words of Toni Morrison’s new book greet — or assail — us before the story even begins. They’re from the epigraph, which quotes a song cycle written by the author some 20 years ago and therefore, it seems safe to say, not originally intended for this book, but an indication, perhaps, of how long its themes have been haunting her. And “haunting” is a fitting word for the lyric itself, in which a speaker professes to lack both recognition of and accountability for the strange, shadowy, dissembling domicile in which he finds himself. The atmosphere of alienation makes the song’s final line even more uncanny: “Say, tell me, why does its lock fit my key?” Thus the stage is set for “Home”: on the basis of its publisher’s description a novel, on the basis of its length a novella, and on the basis of its stripped-down, symbol-laden plot something of an allegory. It tells the story of Frank Money, a 24-year-old Korean War veteran, as he embarks on a reluctant journey home. But where — and what — is home? Frank is already back from the fighting when we meet him, a year after being discharged from an integrated Army into a segregated homeland. Since then, he has wandered the streets of Seattle, “not totally homeless, but close.” He has gambled his Army pay and lost it, worked odd jobs and lost them, lived with a girlfriend and lost her, and all the while struggled, none too successfully, against the prospect of losing his mind. The action begins with...

Americal Literature

...comparatively easy read, and seemed like a very real life depiction of American life, from the eyes of the two generations, Tommy Wilhelm and his father, Dr. Adler. Comparing it to one of the first novels I read in this course, Death of a Salesman, I realize that Seize the Day also has the theme of the broken myth of the American dream embedded in the story. Also the title of the novel struck me at first, but I could not remember where I had read or come across this phrase before. Upon searching online, I remembered that it has its origin in one of the poems of a Latin Poet Horace, the word being “Carpe diem” in Latin. I remembered that I had read this back in high school, the stanza of the poem was:   While we speak, envious time will have {already} fled Seize the day, trusting as little as possible in the future. It’s interesting how just a small phrase can carry so much meaning. Saul Bellow has very effectively depicted the philosophy of carpe diem by narrating a real life scenario of war stricken America where maximizing the utility of time is the very important. Although the theme of alienation and isolation is prevalent throughout the book through Tommy’s life events, Saul could not make me feel sympathetic towards Tommy. Tommy’s inability to judge himself, and be self-aware of his strengths and weaknesses causes his downfall. He is always reluctant to confront his failures, and does not have the courage to make the final step. He is not just isolated from his family...
