Born Again

The short story “Born Again” was written by Anne Billson. It was written in 1993. It is a postmodern story. Postmodernism is a term that describes the movement in arts, literature, culture, etc., that was an extension of modernism. Postmodernism involved the break with the norms and ideals of the modernism. In postmodernism you often include the perception of common truths. Postmodernism is a very hard term to define, since it is so abstract.
Born Again is a story filled with action. It is filled with violence, but in the same way it is kind of ironic and satirical.

Born Again is a story about a woman named Nancy Loughlin, who lives and works in the city of London. She is very career-minded. It seems like/that she has a very important position in an international firm of some sort. The reason you could think it is international, is because of her appointment with “the Belgians”. She is a single woman and it does not appear that she has any family. She is very fixated about her health. She does not allow her self to do drugs, have sex, and smoke cigarettes or anything related. The introduction however, implies that she might have a past that involved these vices.
Even though she cares about her health, she still allows her self a glass of wine, and her urge of the famous Fudge Tub is very excessive.
In the text Nancy is pregnant, but she has not been sleeping with anyone for some years. She then gets in trouble with a quite extreme Christian organisation and all hell breaks lose.
The members of the organisation try to kill the child but fails miserably.

The title of the story can symbolize a lot of things. After reading the first couple of lines I figured that it symbolized her “rebirth” after a life of filthy habits. This turned out not to be true since the story did not have much to do with this.
Later on in the story she calls herself a “born-again virgin”. This could refer to her previous life of vices. Still I do not believe that the story is about this. I believe that the story is about her child, who might be the Anti-Christ, I getting reborn.

The short story has some ironic components. Miss Loughlin does not seem to take all the things, that happens around her, very seriously. There are a lot of horrifying things happening around her and she does not fear them and she actually kind of ignores them. A normal person would probably be horribly traumatised by all of these events, but not Nancy. These are just some of the ironic elements happening around her. These elements make this action filled and horrifying story seem sort of ironic and quite humoristic. This just stays true to the postmodern genre. This is seen in other postmodern works like “Pulp Fiction”. The movie is quite humorous and has some of the same action- and horror elements as the text.

Numerous issues are brought up in the text. Issues like abortion and religion are brought up.
Very early in the story Nancy gets pregnant without knowing the father. According to her she has not had sex for years. This is very similar to the biblical story about Jesus and his mother, Virgin Marie. An abortion is a very severe thing to deal with. Normally, I guess, a woman would at least think about getting an abortion. Even though an abortion was legal and was no longer a taboo, it is still kind of a big deal. Maybe not for the society, but perhaps for the individual person it is a great matter. The fact that she does not even put any thought into this decision makes her look a bit cynical.
An argument that could support her decision though, could be that it is not long ago that the women entered the job market. I know that they started working earlier, but it is not that long ago, that the whole idea of a career woman started.

The ironic thing of this abortion however is the fact that a Christian organisation supports the abortion. The organisation is a bit exaggerated, but still. They imply that her child is some sort of “Anti-Christ”, by calling her the “Whore of Babylon”.
There is no doubt that the brothers of “The Divine Order of the Dead Saints” are supporting her decision.
As soon as she explains to the last member that she does not want to keep the baby, they leave her alone.
That her plan does not follow through is a different matter.
In a way the author sort of makes fun with religion. Other examples of this are that Nancy is very blasphemous by using variety of biblical terms like “Good lord” or “Jesus”. These examples are a bit subtle, but I still think they support my theory.

Nancy has a very special way to abstract from her issues. It is not a secret that she wants to have things under control. She quits all of her filthy habits and she is very focused on her career. Her career I her way, and everyone else’s, to gain financial security. This makes her in control of her own life.
Whenever she is not in control she craves the Fudge Tub. She moves her own stream of thoughts away from her problem. She does this a few times in the story. Eating a whole Fudge Tub is not what you would consider healthy, but the damage is so minimal that she is still able to control her urge.

Towards the end of the story Nancy gets more or less powerful. She cannot be harmed because of her pregnancy but now she relapses into her vices. This is indicated in the last sentence where she says: “I might as well take up smoking again” (p. 87, l. 32).

The Screen Saver

...staff—specifically John Blank, the Jewish employees and the Christian employees particularly, and the HR person or department. As the owner of the agency, Ed Harrison is affected. Due to the small size of the firm, he will ultimately be involved in the incident between Blank and the born-again Christian. If the company had been bigger, Harrison may not have heard about this issue if it was resolved through HR or another party. John Blank is clearly affected as he is offended by the religious screen saver of another employee. He claims that the other Jewish employees are also offended—though a first hand account from them is not provided. Consequently, Blank has spoken with the born-again Christian—and has not yet resolved the matter. Thus, this employee is now too affected. This can potentially lead to a clash between the religions 2) What are the likely consequences? Though a discussion of how HR should handle this scenario will be followed shortly, consequences that I can talk about now are any of those actions that will lead to resolvment. Not all people can always be happy. In this scenario, the best thing to do is whatever causes the least bit of disruption to the workflow. Again due to the small nature, and lack of privacy at the firm, this issue is one that may need to gt fixed fast—which can lead to hasty solutions that will not...

Born Global and Born Again Global Firms

Mangement Case

...Arctic Mining Consultants (Case Study) Tom Parker enjoyed working outdoors. At various times in the past, he worked as a ranch hand, high steel rigger, headstone installer, prospector, and geological field technician. Now 43, Parker is a geological field technician and field coordinator with Arctic Mining Consultants. He has specialized knowledge and experience in all nontechnical aspects of mineral exploration, including claim staking, line cutting and grid installation, soil sampling, prospecting, and trenching. He is responsible for hiring, training, and supervising field assistants for all of Arctic Mining Consultants' programs. Field assistants are paid a fairly low daily wage (no matter how long they work, which may be up to 12 hours or more) but are provided meals and accommodation. Many of the programs are operated by a project manager who reports to Parker. Parker sometimes acts as a project manager , as he did on a job that involved staking 15 claims near Eagle Lake, Alaska. He selected John Talbot, Greg Boyce, and Brian Millar, all of whom had previously worked with Parker, as the field assistants. To stake a claim, the project team marks a line with flagging tape and blazes along the perimeter of the claim, cutting a claim post every 500 yards (called a length). The 15 claims would require almost 60 miles of line in total. Parker had budgeted seven days (plus mobilization and demobilization) to complete the job. This meant that each of the four stakers (Parker, Talbot...

Born Into Brothels

...Documentary Film “Born Into Brothels” Response Essay Academy award winner “Born Into Brothels” (2004) directed by Zana Briski and Ross Kaufmann takes place in Calcutta’s Sonagachi Red Light District in India. The film starts with a close up shot of a young girl’s face. All throughout the beginning, lots of transitions are used by the editor. The scenes switch back and fourth of the busy street where women line up to sell themselves for money, then the focus is on the children’s face again. The innocence shows in their eyes, but they already know what happens behind closed doors, and they know soon it’s their turn to “join the line”. The scenes are filled with still images of the residents of the Red Light District. The film depicts a hard life for these women and their children. It saddens me deeply that this is the fate of many girls in impoverished countries. Without help many of these precious children will be prostituting themselves soon, because they are forced by their ignorant parents and their poverty. What a clever way to make this film! To live with them and form a friendship during the filming process, and to help these children to not end up like their mothers did. A lot of b-roll footage and the children’s photos are shown throughout the film. The camera follows the children around in a Cinema verite fashion to capture the action. The footage is shaky but the content of the film is so powerful it doesn’t matter. The film has the feel of a home video...

Born Into Brothels Analysis

...Zana Briski’s Born into Brothels is a documentary that portrays the lives of multiple children of prostitutes in India who face extreme verbal, emotional, and physical abuse on a daily basis. They face it so often it makes you wonder what is to gain for their so-called, “superiors”. There is a very similar situation in the book sold where a young girl named Lakshmi faces similar abuse, but hers also entails the desecration of her pride and emotional stability. The author of the book Patricia McCormick helps shed some insight on how people may profit from their wrongdoing on others. To begin, almost directly after Lakshmi is being traded off into slavery, she gets taken advantage of and is not only being used but also being abused physically...

Thunder Road

...Patrick Cain Craft of Language: Poetry Professor Lewis THUNDER ROAD by Bruce Springsteen Thunder Road is widely regarded as one of the greatest rock and roll songs ever written. The song is a ballad that tells the story of the main character, Mary, her boyfriend, and their one shot to get out of their “town for losers.” Springsteen’s use of rhyme scheme, imagery, and personification, and simile among other elements add to the song’s theme of youths in love, restlessness, and willing to get to where they want to be. The song incorporates a very simple rhyme scheme of AA BB CC DD. Springsteen used this simple rhyme scheme to make the song sound young and simple. The simple rhyme scheme makes it as if the song is written by a young person who is not trying to be too complex and is just trying to get convey his point to Mary, the girl he is singing to. There is obvious meter to the song as well, as it follows a simple rhythm, which also accentuates the simplicity of the song as if it were written by a kid. Throughout the song, Springsteen repeats the phrase, “Oh thunder road, oh thunder road, oh thunder road.” The phrase could be used in a literal sense to describe where Mary and her boyfriend are driving, or even the road that they are using to escape from all of their problems. Thunder road is the place that they want to get. Springsteen writes, “Riding out tonight to case the promise land.” It is almost as if thunder road is their promise land, and if they don’t...

Born Into Brothels Film Analysis

...Born into Brothels is a documentary focusing on the lives of a group of children who were born and live in the “red light” district of India, specifically the children of prostitutes. The documentary was well received by critics and won multiple awards, including an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. With such positive reception, it is important to examine what made this documentary so successful; its success can be broken down into two main components, method of delivery and subject matter. The film is shot almost entirely by a single camera, with no additional cameramen or microphone equipment. Much of the footage from the early part of the film was not intended to be included in the documentary, but was a side note of the Zana Briski’s original intent filming her experience in the red light district of India. However, as she got to know the children she began focusing the filming more on them and their situation. This leads the camera work related to the children in the early part of the file to be very rough, as Briski is often holding the camera while trying to interact with the children. When Briski is not holding the camera it is in a stationary position filming her, so it cannot capture the children’s part of the scene easily, only their voices. This is one of the film’s strengths, as it gives a first person feel to the storytelling, placing the viewer with the children and in the city just as Briski experienced it rather than just observing it in travel log...

A few weeks after it was released by Alloy it was discovered that she plagiarized several different authors. A few of the authors that she took portions of her work from and the books that they were from are Megan F. McCafferty “Sloppy First”, “Second Helpings”, Toni Morrison “The Bluest Eye” and Tanuja Desai Hidier “Born Confused” (Zhou, 2006) (Dave, 2006). After the plagiarism was discovered her books were taken off the shelves and she lost the contract for the movie. At the time this took place Kaavya Viswanathan was a student at Harvard University, the academic board met to go over the case and they determined that because it was not academic plagiarism that she would not be punished by the school, however she did take a leave of absence from school until all aspects of the case was settled (Dave, 2006). Plagiarism is when someone copies another’s work verbatim and puts their name on it taking full ownership of the work (iParadigms, LLC, 2013). Paraphrasing is also considered to be plagiarism if it is not cited giving credit to the original author of the work. There are a couple ways that someone could mistakenly plagiarize their work. Digital Media

...Educators and parents have legitimate concerns about the effects of the Digital Age on learning. Digital media has changed dramatically since the development of the Internet and improvement of wireless technology. John Palfrey, Professor of Law and Urs Gasser, Executive Director of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society, both employed by the prestigious Harvard Law School, have written about how the world has been reshaped because of this new digital world in Born Digital. They found that this period “is the most rapid period of technological transformation ever, at least, when it comes to information” (3). This transformation of digital media over the last twenty-five years and the introduction of tools like the iPad create a clutter of information that threaten the ability to think deeply and concentrate, which has made the current educational system obsolete and ineffective. This same technology can be utilized to create the school of the future, by improving learning in the Digital Age. Digital natives, ”born after 1980,” do not know the world without the Internet, cell phones, computers, tablets and everything else that networked digital technology has provided (Palfrey 1). They “study, work, write and interact with each other in ways that are very different from the ways” their parents and grandparents grew up. (Palfrey 2). Palfrey and Gasser found that digital natives are comfortable with this new technology and experts at multitasking by surfing, gaming, texting...

Wilco

...Wilco’s band recorded their record Yankee for Hotel Foxtrot in unique ways. One thing that stands out the most is the fact that the band produced, engineered and completely put the record together on their own. They considered the record to be an experiment and spent a lot of time changing things up with the music until they got their desired results. After waking the movie “I am Trying to Break Your Heart”,if I were to be the band manager, I would maybe consider handling some things in a different way. When it comes to the record label and the changing relationship, I would advice the band to stay true to themselves. The record label wanted the band to change the record and I would have to agree with the band when they said no. It is their record and they are the artists, why should they change something that is a reflection of who they are? I think it was fine for the band to pull away from the record label because as a result, they ended up with more freedom to release the album the way they wanted to. The record label basically paid for the band to make the record, then turned around and gave it right back to the band which in my opinion was not smart on their part. As far as the conflicts between Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett, I do not know if there was much to be done that could have helped the situation. The conflicts that they had would have more than likely ended up causing problems at some point in time. Jay and Jeff both had ideas that they wanted and both were not...
