...Patrick Cain Craft of Language: Poetry Professor Lewis THUNDER ROAD by Bruce Springsteen Thunder Road is widely regarded as one of the greatest rock and roll songs ever written. The song is a ballad that tells the story of the main character, Mary, her boyfriend, and their one shot to get out of their “town for losers.” Springsteen’s use of rhyme scheme, imagery, and personification, and simile among other elements add to the song’s theme of youths in love, restlessness, and willing to get to where they want to be. The song incorporates a very simple rhyme scheme of AA BB CC DD. Springsteen used this simple rhyme scheme to make the song sound young and simple. The simple rhyme scheme makes it as if the song is written by a young person who is not trying to be too complex and is just trying to get convey his point to Mary, the girl he is singing to. There is obvious meter to the song as well, as it follows a simple rhythm, which also accentuates the simplicity of the song as if it were written by a kid. Throughout the song, Springsteen repeats the phrase, “Oh thunder road, oh thunder road, oh thunder road.” The phrase could be used in a literal sense to describe where Mary and her boyfriend are driving, or even the road that they are using to escape from all of their problems. Thunder road is the place that they want to get. Springsteen writes, “Riding out tonight to case the promise land.” It is almost as if thunder road is their promise land, and if they don’t...

...Oddballs in the Woods During the fourteenth chapter of Born to Run, the author writes about the integrity of ultrarunners. Dr. Vigil is smart for looking to these runners for answers. They are honest. They have nothing to gain, unlike runners competing for fame, wealth, and medals. They do not win prizes, no matter what place they finish in. However, no one seems to care. Vigil can find out what everyone is capable of from these runners. These runners are not full of envy. They only want to compete for the fun of it. The real running people enjoy what they do, and they spend all their time running. They are strange to others, but running is what they are born to do. 15. Natural Born Runners During the fifteenth chapter of Born to Run, the author writes about how humans are natural runners. History shows it is how humans survived. They ran to eat and to avoid being eaten. The reason the Tarahumara are so quick and astonishing to others is because they know how it feels to love running. Americans were fast some forty years ago, before running was about money. Vigil’s mission is to find a natural born runner and study how they live, train, and think. Vigil wants to know the relationship between character and running because of Emil Zatopek. The author concludes people cannot be alive without...

...runners new to natural running, with the cushioning and support of a traditional shoe. Low-profile cushioning and a rounded heel encourage a natural footstrike.” Can you believe what they’re saying? This is the year 2016, and Nike is still advertising this junk on their website! On average, these shoes cost over $100, and expensive shoes are not the only detriment to runners—injuries. Injuries that are commonly associated with these fancy shoes promise only more trouble for running performance. Christopher McDougall is a novice runner who has experienced injuries related to cushioned shoes, but as an established journalist, he adventures into an unknown part of the world to discover the secrets of running. In his non-fictional narrative, Born to Run, McDougall maintains the premise that big running companies, such as Nike—eliminated athletic competition in America, with the adoption of cushioning our shoes. McDougall effectively provides authentic and appreciable evidence to corroborate his main point regarding the decline in athletic competition in America because of big shoe companies, by utilizing rhetorical strategies to allow readers to assess the numbers for themselves and the credibility that merits his work. First, McDougall successfully implements logical evidence; by providing a quantitative study executed by a highly educated expert specialized in the discipline of preventative medicine. This study that was done by Dr. Bernard Marti, M.D., at Switzerland’s University...

...December 25, 2013 .Present Obama declared immigration reform in 2014.This reform arouse a hot debate. Immigration in recent decades has significantly increased the presence of foreign-born workers in the United States. Some stories in the popular press suggest that immigrants lower wage and diminish the job opportunities of workers born in the United States. Others portray immigrants as filling essential jobs that are shunned by other workers and expand job opportunities. Immigration effects on employment, income, and productivity vary by occupation, job, and industry. One recent research by Peri (2009) and Peri and Sparber (2009) examining the impact of immigrants on the broader U.S. economy. These studies systematically analyze how immigrants affect total output, income per worker, and employment in the short and long run. Consistent with previous research. According to study, immigrants help to create new jobs, stabilize or strengthen the housing market, increase income per U.S.-born worker ,and make once-declining areas more attractive Immigrants create jobs. Research on how immigration impacts U.S. workers often focuses on how immigration affects the wages of native-born workers. Equally important, however, is how immigration affects employment opportunities for the native born. Research shows that increased immigration does not displace U.S. workers for many of the same reasons that there are not negative wage effects. Another reason that immigrants do not displace...

...Children born with birth defects or “slower” than others are usually criticized more. Children who are disabled have to be treated with a lot of care and can’t do the things normal kids can do. In James Hurst’s “The Scarlet Ibis,” Doodle is born different from other people. All his brother ,the narrator, wanted was a brother to run and fight with. Doodle was a disappointment for his brother. Doodle spent his whole day laying in a room since he couldn’t walk or talk. The narrator set out to teach him to walk because he was ashamed of him. The Narrator is guilty for Doodles death because he pushed him to his limit, knowing he could only do certain things. ...claimed, “In that State of the Union, President Obama didn’t so much as mention the 10 sailors that had been captured by Iran…” clearly disapproving our current president’s performance. What struck me quite repulsive were Trump’s attacks on Cruz’s qualifications to run for the presidency. As stated in the Constitution, a presidential candidate must be 35 years of age, a resident in the United States for 14 years, and a natural born citizen. Presidential candidate Ted Cruz clears all 3 of these benchmarks, but a dispute was raised concerning his birth; if he was considered a naturalized citizen. As he was born in Canada, he was criticized for not being a natural-born citizen. As classified by CRS, “… the term ‘natural born citizen’ citizen would mean a person who is entitled to U.S. citizenship 'by birth' or 'at birth,' either by being born 'in' the United States and under its jurisdiction, even those born to alien parents; by being born abroad to U.S. citizen-parents; or by being born in other situations meeting legal requirements for U.S. citizenship 'at birth." This would classify Cruz eligible to run for president as his father was from Cuba, but earned his citizenship in the United States. His mother was born in Delaware, simplifying that side of the family. Given the chance, Trump would take extreme measures to secure his victory in the Republican race; even it means slandering the people running against him. Just like in 1844 - which included Whig Party leader, Thurlow...

...Who are the Citizens of the Philippines? A Filipino citizen may be considered natural-born or naturalized citizen. Both statuses bestow upon the individual certain privileges and exclusive rights such as the rights to vote, to run for public, etc. which may be denied the foreigner. NATURAL-BORN FILIPINO Art. IV, sec. 2 of the 1987 Constitution defines the NATURAL-BORN Filipino citizens as: 1. “Those who are citizens of the Philippines at the time of the adoption of this (1987) Constitution” 2. “those whose fathers OR mothers are citizens of the Philippines” and 3. “those born before January 7, 1973, of Filipino mothers, who elect Philippine citizenship upon reaching the age of majority. Even if the child is born to an alien father and a Filipino mother, the Filipino citizenship of the mother will bestow natural-born Philippine citizenship upon the child PROVIDED his birth occurred on or after January 17, 1973 (date of ratification of the 1973 Constitution), otherwise he followed the citizenship of the alien father and acquired at best only an inchoate Philippine citizenship which he could perfect by election upon attaining majority age. EXCEPT if he is born out of lawful wedlock, in which case, he will be considered a Filipino by virtue of his mother’s citizenship. In addition, only natural-born citizens are allowed to hold constitutional offices such as the office of the President; Senators; Members of the House of Representatives;...

...countries could be run. The city-state of Athens was strong and had a very strong military and naval reinforcements to keep it safe. A democracy is defined as; “a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections”(Merriam Webster). The development of the Athenian democracy saved the people of Athens from the rule of emperors and military leaders. Even though Athenian Democracy was the most developed political process of running a government, it was still not as efficient and exact as the United States model which more clearly established the rights of the governed because it set up trial by jury, benefits of being a US born citizen and equality for all. Trial by jury is essential to they way of life in America. To be eligible for jury duty in the United States a person has to be at least 18 years of age and cannot have been convicted of a felony. Jurors are interviewed to make...
