...The Boston Marathon is the world’s oldest annual marathon held on the anniversary of the 1775 battles of Lexington and Concord that kicked off the American Revolutionary War, also known as Patriots’ Day. The 117th running of the race was held on April 15th, 2013 with nearly 23,000 participants. Many of us remember this race as a very tragic event in our history where 2 bombs went off near the finish line of the race wounding 260 people and killing 3 spectators (http://www.history.com/topics/boston-marathon-bombings). I chose this event in our recent history because it is one that is significant for a variety of reasons. The Boston Marathon is an event that is quite patriotic, being held on a holiday and in a very historic part of our country....

...Why would someone come to a worldwide marathon and bomb it? This is what the hundreds of families and victims minds just could not understand. ...The first marathon was run at the Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. (“Marathon History”) For seventy years, running a marathon was strictly a men-only activity. That was until the 1967 Boston Marathon, when the name K.V. Switzer showed up on a marathon registration. (“Kathrine Switzer Biography”) Little did the race officials know, K.V. Switzer was actually Katherine Virginia Switzer. In the pictures shown of the race that day, it is evident that Switzer was attacked by race officials for her heroic act for women in sports. Even though a grey sweat suit is not particularly the most noble and valiant look, seeing Switzer open a new window for women’s running is courageous enough to be considered a hero for any runner to this day. Although these photos are not posed, clear acts of heroism can be depicted. In the chosen pictures, Switzer is running in the 1967 Boston Marathon. Race official Jock Semple, pictured in black, is seen chasing after Switzer. Switzer claimed Semple yelled, “Get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers.” Switzer’s boyfriend, Tom Miler, then shoved Semple aside, letting Switzer continue on. When asked why she didn’t drop out, Switzer states, “I knew if I did that no one would...

...events to do this project on, I came across the Boston Marathon Bombing Attacks. I found this event fairly more interesting than the others because it was a more recent event and it changed the United States’ point of view on punishment and safety. The two terrible men who created this mess were two Muslims. The brothers who went by the “Bomb Brothers” struck one of the United States’ biggest traditions with a boom. The bright, happy, and exciting day in Boston turned downhill fast. As the runners took their final turn toward the finish line and the audience cheered, a loud boom silenced the happiness and cranked up the fear. Blood and Terror rose as the smoke did. But as everyone thought it was an...

...coordination of activities is important to ensuring an effective and efficient response to containing, controlling, and resolving the incident. However, when incidents do strike, local law enforcement personnel are the first responders on the scene. The Boston Marathon bombing incident was a demonstration of how local law enforcement worked with state and federal law enforcement to coordinate the clearing of the scenes and location of the perpetrators. Since the terrorism incident that occurred on September 11, 2001, city leaders across the United States have assumed greater roles of responsibility in homeland security (Downing, 2009). This new responsibility has brought with it issues and practical challenges that city leaders and policymakers are confronted with during times of crisis that necessitate the securing of their communities. Although assistance comes from a variety of sources during emergency events, it is critical that local leaders are endowed with the knowledge to aid them in meeting the terrorism challenges that could occur not just now, but also in the future. Presented in this paper is information that local leaders can employ to ensure that they respond appropriately to acts of terrorism. The Boston Marathon bombing and law enforcement response to the incident will be used as a framework for the discussion. What is Terrorism? According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting system, terrorism is classified into two categories: domestic terrorism and international...

Gretchen Bernardini English 111 Nikki Aitken 23 June 2013 Major Paper #2 And that’s What He Said In today’s busy hectic world, we need to make sure that the time we spend getting information about what is going on in our world is accurate. With breaking news happening every day, we rely on the people reporting the news to be fair, unbiased, and correct in the information they are reporting to the general public. When there are big events going on, especially domestically, many of us either turn on the television or the internet to the big outlets, i.e. CNN, MSNBC, FOX, to get the information and be knowledgeable about what is happening. Referring to the most recent major news story, the Boston Marathon Bombing is an example of grossly misinterpreted information, because...

...Persuasive Position Paper Topic: Whether Boston should host the 2024 Olympics My Position Hosting the Olympics Games is more than simply demonstrating a passion for sports; it has a profound social and economic impact to the host city and nation. In my view, the benefits will outweigh the challenges in hosting the 2024 Boston Olympics. By standing out and being chosen by United States Olympic Committee (USOC) as the candidate city, Boston has made a significant step toward the greatest honor to transcend peace, prosperity, and humanity through this event. Memorandum Date: Mar 11, 2015 To: United States Olympic Committee From: Subject: Withdraw Boston’s 2024 Olympics Bid Hosting the 2024 Olympic Games in Boston would be a great honor and an attractive opportunity to demonstrate the United States’ competitiveness and global leadership. Despite the opportunities, hosting such a mega sporting event bears tremendous downsides, including cost overrun, economic uncertainty, and reputation risk. In addition, Boston’s credential as a host city remains dubious. Hence, I urge USOC to withdraw Boston’s 2024 Olympic bid submitted to the International Olympic Committee. Cost Overruns Notwithstanding Boston’s announcement that all funding used for infrastructure and venues needed for the Olympics will be raised from the private sector, history indicated that this promise would most likely become an empty one and consequently threaten the host’s financial health. A...

...In this short paper I will be outlining the Positive externalities that come from the advancement and development of replacement limbs over the past 14 years of war. With every war a positive outcome is always medical knowledge due to the absolute need to correct injuries usually not seen in the civilian world. “For decades, a soldier's lost limb meant a life confined to a wheelchair or crutches and at the very least a discharge from active service. But an increasing number of injuries in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, while horrific, have led by necessity to advancements in prosthetics technology. In fact, some amputee service members have been able to remain on active duty, thanks to the experience earned by their doctors.” (Koebler, 2012). This particular data will focus on the Armies data as they are the largest ground force in both recent wars. “According to the Army, at least 167 soldiers who have had a major limb amputation (complete loss of an arm, leg, hand, or foot) have remained on active duty since the start of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars” (Koebler, 2012). I have personally seen at least 2 of these individuals in my time in service able to perform their duties without a hitch due to prosthesis. Movements are not stiff or rigid as they used to be more of a placeholder then anything useful. “Kevin Carroll, vice president of Prosthetics at Hanger, a company that makes artificial limbs, says prosthetics have become more comfortable to wear and closer in range...

.... ìGETTING TO NOî AN ANALYSIS OF FAILED MEDIATION IN THE ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN CONFLICT (1993-2000) Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy Thesis Submitted by Ahsiya Posner 9 February 2003 Under the advisement of Professor Eileen Babbitt and Professor Diana Chigas ABSTRACT This paper will attempt this difficult but important task with the humble understanding that ìthe full storyî is impossible to know and telló even for the very participants of the process. Nevertheless, in this investigation, the author will explore four main questions. The first three questions are: 1) did the OPP set the Israelis and Palestinians on a trajectory that ìdoomedî CD2 from the start?; 2) were there problems inherent to the process and structure of CD2 that led to its failure?; and, 3) how should future mediation attempts of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict be structured in order to meet with more success? The fourth question, however, requires further introduction. The forthcoming study of CD2 will be guided by a ìProvisional Framework (PF)î of seven criteria that I believe are necessary ingredients to successful peacemaking processes. I devised this framework after consulting existing literature and scholars in the field of mediation and negotiation in general, as well as after reviewing scholarly pieces focusing on the Israel-Palestinian peace process in particular. Thus, after using this framework to analyze CD2, conclusions will thus be drawn with regard to a fourth and final question:...

...Active School Shooter Introduction The intention of this paper is to look at and present some issues and strategies that members of a school community think about when trying to create safer schools. Particularly when addressing an active shooter in a school setting. A major issue to consider when trying to keep all schools safe, is the simple fact that no two schools are the same. Understanding this can lead us to the conclusion that it is impossible to have one global plan or program that can be 100% effective in all schools. “Violence prevention programs work best when they incorporate multiple strategies and address the full range of possible acts of violence in schools. For any set of policies to work, it must be established and implemented with the full participation and support of school board members, administrators, parents, students, community members, emergency response personnel, and law enforcement.” (Kramen, 2008.) If these responsibilities were not shared, the success rate for safe school policies would be very low. Parents send their children to school and think that during that time they are studying and doing other productive, educational things. The last thing parents expect is something terrible happening to their child while at school. School violence is happening more frequently than it should and something needs to be done to stop it. Not only does an act of school violence, especially a school shooting, affect the individual student it reflects poorly...
