A controversy surrounding tap water and bottled water exists. Americans spend $12 billion on bottled water every year when tap water is free. It takes 1.63 liters of tap water to make every liter of bottled water, and 1.5 million tons of plastic are used to manufacture all those bottles, noted by Biksham Gujja, head of WWF International’s Fresh Water Program (“Tap Water is Clearly Better”). Tap water is better than bottled water because it comes from the earth and is all natural, whereas bottled water is manufactured, there is a cost to make the bottles and ship, and is sold practically everywhere. Many people believe water should be free. Tap water is tested and regulated by The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is responsible for ensuring the safety of the water you drink. Public drinking water systems must meet health-based federal standards for contaminants, including performing regular monitoring and reporting (“Public Drinking Water Systems”). Bottled water is regulated by The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which does not test for all the bacteria’s as the …show more content…
The cost of fuel to transport the water can get expensive, to go 300 miles cost approximately $127.50 which is 50 gallons of diesel at $2.55 gallon, this example depends on the price of diesel which fluctuates according to the region. The cost of tap water is free, which comes from the ground through pipes and is a onetime cost. It cost only pennies to buy a reusable bottle to refill, tap water is everywhere and accessible. Americans spend millions on bottled water, if you were to use one reusable bottle and refill it with tap water, just think how much plastic would not be sitting in our landfills much less littering our highways. It takes 450 years for plastic bottles to completely decompose, depending on the type of plastic bottle it can take as long as 1000 years, that’s a long time to be in our

...broaden their brand portfolios to include noncarbonated beverages like tea, juice, sports drinks, and bottled water. For over a century, Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola had vied for the "throat share" of the world's beverage market. The most intense battles of the cola wars were fought over the $60 billion industry in the United States, where the average American consumes 53 gallons of carbonated soft drinks (CSD) per year. In a "carefully waged competitive struggle," from 1975 to 1995 both Coke and Pepsi had achieved average annual growth of around 10% as both U.S. and worldwide CSD consumption consistently rose. This cozy situation was threatened in the late 1990s, however, when U.S. CSD consumption dropped for two consecutive years and worldwide shipments slowed for both Coke and Pepsi. The case considers whether Coke's and Pepsi's era of sustained growth and profitability was coming to a close or whether this apparent slowdown was just another blip in the course of a century of enviable performance. A rewritten version of an earlier case by Michael E. Porter and David B. Yoffie. Essay: The case study “Cola Wars Continue: Coke and Pepsi in the Twenty-First Century” focuses on describing Coke and Pepsi within the CSD industry by providing detailed statements about the companies’ accounts and strategies to increase their market share. Furthermore, the case also focuses on the Coke vs. Pepsi goods which target similar groups of costumers, and how these companies have had and still...

Porters Five Forces

...Introduction: In 1979, Harvard Business Review published “How Competitive Forces Shape Strategy” by a young economist and associate professor, Michael E. Porter. It was his first HBR article, and it started a revolution in the strategy field. In subsequent decades, Porter has brought his signature economic rigor to the study of competitive strategy for corporations, regions, nations, and, more recently, health care and philanthropy. “Porter’s five forces” have shaped a generation of academic research and business practice. With prodding and assistance from Harvard Business School Professor Jan ‘ Rivkin and longtime colleague Joan Magretta, Porter here reaffirms, up-dates, and extends the classic work. He also ad-dresses common misunderstandings, provides practical guidance for users of the framework, and offers a deeper view of its implications for strategy today. In essence, the job of the strategist is to understand and cope with competition. Often, however, managers define competition too narrowly, as if it occurred only among today’s direct competitors. Yet competition for profits goes beyond established industry rivals to include four other competitive forces as well customers, suppliers, potential entrants, and substitute products. The extended rivalry that results from all five forces defines an industry’s structure and shapes the nature of competitive interaction within an industry. As different from one another as industries might appear on the surface, the underlying...

The Nature of a Man

...part of human behavior. It serves as the foundation for the agency model of financial, organizational, and governance structure of firms. The growing body of social science research on human behavior has a common message: Whether they are politicians, managers, academics, professionals, philanthropists, or factory workers, individuals are resourceful, evaluative maximizers. They respond creatively to the opportunities the environment presents, and they work to loosen constraints that prevent them from doing what they wish. They care about not only money, but about almost everything—respect, honor, power, love, and the welfare of others. The challenge for our society, and for all organizations in it, is to establish rules of the game that tap and direct human energy in ways that increase rather than reduce the effective use of our scarce resources. © M. But, in fact, households and economies have much in common. A household faces many decisions. It must decide which members of the household do which tasks and what each member gets in return: Who cooks dinner? Who does the laundry? Who gets the extra dessert at dinner? Who gets to choose what TV show to watch? In short, the household must allocate its scarce resources among its various members, taking into account each member’s abilities, efforts, and desires. Like a household, a society faces many decisions. A society must decide what jobs will be done and who will do them. It needs some people to grow food, other people to make clothing, and still others to design computer software.
