I start walking through the campsite, but this time it feels different. The warm, burnt scent of the gigantic campfire immediately travels into my nose. I bend down to grab a piece of soon to be firewood, I begin to peel all of the bark off of the broken off tree branch. I run my hand down the freshly peeled piece of wood which makes me realize how smooth the piece of firewood really is. Eventually, I realize that I am rubbing a very smooth piece of firewood, so, I throw the firewood and I continue walking through the campsite. As I continue walking through the camp, I notice that the string on my small but sturdy bow was untied. I kneel down and start re-tying the string on my bow. The main character, is me. Since most people do not know what a bow drill is, the definition is, a prehistoric form of drilling tool. It commonly was used to make friction fire, and in this function it also was called a fire drill. The setting for my essay is the main campgrounds that I use to stay at during my wilderness program. This “last look” is taking place during the last night of my stay at the program. I am seeing the bow drill for the last time because I am graduating from the wilderness camp which means once I leave the campsite, I am never coming back. The fires would give us light when there was none and provide us warmth on cold days. At every campsite that we went to we would start at least one campfire. Leaving these campfires at each campsite would be a symbol of us being at that campsite. Another reason that campfires are so important is because they always provided light for me, even when everything else was dark I could always count on a campfire to lighten things up for me. The smell of campfires is so distinct to me that I could smell it from miles away. Whenever I smell the burning wood or charcoal I always start to feel very relieved. Campfires make me more comfortable because in the morning and nighttime at the wilderness program we would always have a “Truth Circle” where we would talk about our emotions and how we were feeling. These truth circles helped me meet other kids that were in the program and eventually become friends with
