Boyscouts Allowing Gays

...Boy Scouts allowing gays 2-7-2012 Boy scouts of America will be celebrated its 103rd birthday 2-8-2013. About 2 months ago while I was watching the news on KARE 11 one of the headlines was that the “Boy Scouts of America are considering allowing Gays in the organization”. On 2-6-13 I read a news article published by Miranda Leitsinger, a staff writer for NBC news states “Boy Scouts: We need more time for decision on gay membership”. This was brought before the Supreme Court in 2000 and they ruled in their favor stating that this was legal free speech by a private organization and thus did not have to allow gays to join. I wonder if it was a sense of shame and conscience that brought about the statement in January. As society in a whole our views have changed about limiting people to organizations based on their sex, sexual orientation, color or ethnicity. With the recent articles about being gay and bullied coming out over the last year it doesn’t look good that the Boy Scouts sill up hold such unethical policy of discrimination. The solution that was put in place by the Boy Scouts after they had released to the press that they were going to consider allowing gays in Scouting was followed by poll for people for or against allowing gays. This is a Utilitarianism theory on the boy scouts part as they were looking for the public to make up their mind for them and be able to blame others. The Boy Scouts of America have Absolut phobia and should develop...

Personal Narrative: How Nothing Has Affected My Life

...I can say with complete confidence that nothing has affected my life as much as being in the Boy Scouts of America. During my time in scouts, I have been able to watch myself grow as a person in uncountable ways. Looking back to when I first joined scouts in sixth grade, I remember a boy who was extremely shy, secluded, and had very few good friends. I can also remember looking to the troop’s Senior Patrol Leader with a sense of awe. There, standing in front of the room was someone to look up to. Although only a few years older than myself, this youth leader seemed ancient with wisdom, confidence, and ability; he seemed to have total and perfect control over the troop, and word of direction that came from his mouth was to be followed. As the years went by I took on more and more leadership in the troop, and soon, I found myself in that very position. Over the past year, I served in the highest youth leadership position in scouts, which was an experience that gave me a chance to develop my leadership and social skills in ways that I could have only imagined previously....

...United Way and the Boy Scout of America 1. The circumstances involving the Boy Scouts of America situation affects everyone that is a part of them and the United Way program. Larry Norvell is the local head of the United Way of Columbia-Willamette and he represents the larger company. He has to make decisions that affect all of United Way and the Boy Scouts of America. He operates a business and needs to handle this situation as a business decision and focus on the bottom line. Sometimes as a business owner you have to look at the pros and cons in any situation. Also, there will be a sacrifice made on either decision he makes. He consulted many people, but ultimately he has to decide what’s best for his organization. United Way is an organization made up of volunteers, contributors, and local charities to help people in their own communities. Larry Norvell is part of an organization that creates a work experience that is fair for all employees. The bottom line is looking beyond the immediate situation and the consequences that his decision will make on everyone. If Larry agrees with the BSA, then United Way will lose contributions from companies. If Larry disagrees with the BSA, then Boy Scouts of America will lose funding. Larry has to make a stance, if he doesn’t then this situation will come back and affect his organization. Society is changing; Larry needs to change policies in order to overcome this bad situation that has arisen. Discrimination has been a...

Boyscouts of America vs. the United Way

...required by law to have rules and regulations in place that protect homosexuals from workplace dismissal based on sexual orientation information.  The case involving the Boy Scouts of America and the United Way detailed in Managing Human Resources (pp 150) provides an excellent example of the ethical and realistic issues that can arise surrounding this now common lifestyle. James Dale prided himself on instilling self-reliance and leadership in children’s’ lives as an assistant scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).  After 12 years, this veteran volunteer was expelled from the BSA after they learned that he was gay because of his sexual orientation.  Though the boy scouts teach young men to stand up for what is right, they did not have any anti-discrimination laws intact to protect homosexual volunteers.  Dale, instead, turned to rely on the courts for help.  During the court case, the state court initially ruled that Dale should be able to return as a scoutmaster, indicating that one’s sexual orientation does not drive the ability to help the scouts, but the BSA did not accept this answer.  Instead, the BSA turned to the Supreme Court to get permission to release Dale of his scoutmaster duties. The United Way had been involved with the BSA for numerous years and provided support funding for various Boy Scout activities and programs.  Overall, the United Way has protected its own employees and those it worked with by instilling a policy protecting employees against sexual...

Boy Scouts

...Rainbow badges for Boy Scouts! For a century the Boy Scouts have been known to some as a household tradition. Grandfathers, fathers, and sons have all had the life in common, joining at a young age, striving to earn their badges and build character. What most don’t know is that for that century that the Boy Scouts has deemed it illegal for anyone who is gay to be a scout. Boy Scouts have been known for building character, unification, and building strong leaders of tomorrow. It seems almost petty and sad to think that such an organization would discriminate against anyone based on their sexual preference. Why should they, or anyone for that matter, reserve the right to tell others they can’t join based on sexual preference? Where is the message of unity and working together as a team? Just what message are they sending to scouts of the future? That it’s acceptable to just and exile others? The Boy Scouts have been known for being heavily faith based. It’s been no secret that many of its biggest supporters are churches. There is nothing wrong with that but one would certainly never guess that an organization that thrives on religion would find the time to discriminate against any one person or group. Every religion, of course, has its own beliefs. Many spread the word of love, all things that or good, or simply the good book itself. Many are followers of God and it seems at times they often forget the wise words to love one another or the saying, “only God can judge me.” What...

Eagle Scout Qualities

...I was a Cub Scout through my elementary school years, and a Boy Scout for the last seven. Everyday, I live by the Scout’s Oath. As a Life Scout pursuing the rank of Eagle, I demonstrate these attributes at all times. I am closing in on the final requirements to be an Eagle Scout. For my Eagle Scout project, I’m going to build a bus shelter in memoriam of my thirteen year old close neighbor who was killed by a reckless driver. I often spend time playing with my little six year old neighbor, Ryan, who has no one else in the neighborhood to play with. When we play, I teach him things but he teaches me things also.
