Tanf

...Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Research Paper Rough Draft Sinclair Community College Outline Introduction: My chosen social welfare policy is Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. I chose this policy because it is a policy that I agree we should have and I feel helps the needy families out a lot. Everyone at some point in their life will need some sort of assistance. TANF is a great option for people who might not be very poor but are struggling temporarily. TANF also is for families who are below the poverty line and who are suffering greatly. TANF is a federally funded grant program that allows states to administer and create their own assistance programs for families in need. The policy I chose corresponds to the practicum placement I am at, which is Boys and Girls Club of Dayton. Boys and Girls Club is an after school program for kids in Dayton to have a safe place to grown and learn. They also have ongoing relationships with caring professionals, and also get to experience life-enhancing programs and character developing experiences. The children at boys and girls club are less fortunate than say kids in Centerville schools, so this is a great place for them to come and get homework done, and play with friends. I believe my policy corresponds with my practicum because, a lot of the children and families I see look as though they have some sort of assistance. For some of the parents of children from Boys and Girls Club, TANF is probably temporary, but some...

Techical Writing

...Technical Vs Casual Writing Technical writing includes essays, papers, M.A. and Ph.D. theses, and report writing for grants and research. It is highly structured with suggestions for margin lengths, paragraph headings, research and above all a research study with experimental data, and a particular format. Whereas Casual writing has no specific rules to follow except to communicate with another person or group of people. Examples of casual writing would class notes, memos, friendly letters, diaries, and post-it notes, chatting and messaging etc. The finished paper has to be re-read in order to eliminate grammatical or typing errors, as these form part of the grading process in technical writing whereas the casual writer is free write its imagination and write as he or she would speak, without having to stick to a particular format. Sentences are mostly short and direct, with no further explanation needed. We frequently use emoticons, slang words etc while casual writing which sometimes can annoy reader or the message is not clear. Technical writing has advantage over it that the message is concise, understandable, and time saving. In casual writing there may be grammatical mistakes which lead to misunderstanding as compared to technical writing. But in my opinion writing casually is more easy and fun. You can write whatever you want to without tension of maintaining the structure and format of writing. An example of both is: Technical writing: This is to inform you that...

Why these men did what they did to me. Old, disgusting men. It was horrible. They knew I did not want to be there, but they paid their money. They used me. I was their property for the night. They destroyed me. (14-year-old girl at Casa Hogar, a shelter in Costa Rica for children rescued from the country’s sex trade1) OVERVIEW Prostitution has been called the world’s oldest “profession.” In reality, it is the world’s oldest “oppression” and continues to be one of the most overlooked human rights abuses of women on the planet today. 2 Prostitution of women is a particularly lethal form of violence against women, and a violation of a woman’s most basic human rights. While society attempts to normalize prostitution on a variety of levels (discussed later in this paper), prostituted women are subjected to violence and abuse at the hands of paying “clients.” For the vast majority of prostituted women, “prostitution is the experience of being hunted, dominated, harassed, assaulted and battered.” 3 It is “sexual terrorism against women at the hands of men and little is being done to stop the carnage...

Sociology of Gender

...such as Stupid Girls and If I Were A Boy by singers Pink and Beyonce respectively demonstrate clearly the assumptions or categorizations we evoke simply by using the terms girl or boy. Although the topic of gender in sociology is vast, this paper focuses on how gender is reproduced and how the gendered body is displayed in society. There are three ways in which gender is reproduced in society. It is reproduced through the family, education and the media. From birth begins gendered expectations. According to the social norm, the color pink is mainly associated as a feminine color and the color blue masculine. Family and friends who go to see the birth of a baby girl fill the hospital room with pink balloons, teddy bears with pink ribbons and if a boy was born the room would be filled with presents which are blue in color. Growing up, girls receive presents such dollhouses and kitchen sets which reinforce their femininity. Parents raise their boys and girls differently. Even though research shows that boys at an early age (around 2 years) are just as interested in playing with the same toys girls play with, parents negatively reinforce the more feminine toys. Even the household tasks that boys and girls are given are gendered. Boys generally take out the garbage and girls do the dishes, set the table. Gender is also reproduced by education. Schools, rather than being a place where males and females are considered equal, are a gendered space. For example, boys are praised for...

...Kianna Petty Social Organized Crime Perspective Paper CJA/384 April 12, 2015 Professor Edward Rafailovitc According to Webster II New Riverside University Dictionary definition, social institutions have been identified as groups of people that work together for common purposes or interest, possessing and developing, responsibilities, rights, protections, and objectives distinct different from other members (Webster II New Riverside University Dictionary, 1996).This paper will explore the social institutions as well as their relationship to organized crime, and further explore the empirical or speculative theories that are applicable to organized crime and behavior. Any type of social institutions consists of a group of people who share a desired result. Generally, there are five different types of social institutions. They are political, educational, religious, economic, and family. The average social institution is an organization of people who abide by the laws and follow the general rules and guidelines in a collective manner. These social groups could be a normal club with one thing or goal in common. Some social institutions that most people are familiar with are the Boys and Girl Clubs, the Cub Scouts, and the Girl Scouts. Further, family, school, church, government agencies are not the only social groups, organized crime organizations have adopted the philosophy of social institutions. Organized crime also had people with a vested interest in the business of killing...

Gender and Family

...called a “status” offense. Status offenses are delinquent actions that do not apply to adults, like running away and truancy. This paper will discuss the impact of gender and family on delinquency and the treatment by gender in the juvenile justice system. Juvenile delinquent behavior is believed to be under-represented due to the limited methods of collecting juvenile crime data. Juvenile arrests accounted for 16 percent of all violent crime arrests (i.e. murder, rape, assault) and 26 percent of all property crime arrests (i.e. burglary, theft, arson) (Puzzanchera, 2009). Other crimes for which juveniles are arrested include simple assault, vandalism, gambling, disorderly conduct, weapons possession, illicit drug/liquor violation (including DUI) and prostitution. It is important to note that a number of misdemeanor crimes go unreported while serious crimes involving injury and/or large economic loss are reported more often. A 1998 U.S. longitudinal study tracking over 6,400 boys for over 20 years found that children who grew up without their biological father in the home were roughly three times more likely to commit a crime that led to incarceration, than children from intact families (Harper & McLanahan, 1998). Others have found that children of divorced parents are up to six times more likely to be delinquent than children from intact families. Boys raised without their fathers were more than twice as likely to end up in jail as those rose with their fathers, and 70% of incarcerated...

Aspects of Writing

... | Unit 2 Assignment | Ang 5-3-2016 | The three different aspects of my writing that I wish to improve are APA format, coming up with a main topic, grammar. These different things have always been an issue with me. I will stress out over a paper and then end up doing it an hour before it is due. I plan on studying more on APA format so I can cite better. I plan on bouncing ideas off of my husband and daughter. I think they would give me good feedback. I need to start on my papers early that way I am not waiting till the last minute. The Problem that I would like to try to solve in my community is trying to get a Rec center/ boys and girls club in this town or even a nearby town. We have nothing here for any kids do after school or in the summer. All we have in this town is a swimming pool. This town is a small town with an hub station for BNSF and a training site for the national guard. I like this topic for the main reason before I moved to this town I lived in a town that had a rec center. My children enjoyed it every day and during the summer. They would attend different sporting events, learned how to interact with other people outside the school. I feel like I can find a lot of different research on this topic, the pros and the cons of a rec...

...a big thing in social media and wanted to investigate more. This source is helpful because it backs up my prior knowledge and thoughts and still gives me new information. It’s even more proof that social media has an affect on eating and body image. If a thigh gap is achieved the person is considered to be desirable. Not many people are a part this fad but the people that are seeing in through pictures and often hear it in real life conversations. A medical director from the Washington Center for Eating Disorders and Adolescent Obesity has seen an increase in adolescent girls and young women with eating disorders. Another medical expert also implied that in order to reach a thigh gap you have to starve. The majority of women bodies aren’t suppose to have thigh gaps so achieving them would be distorting the body. “By achieving a thigh gap, some women believe that ‘they've become a member of an exclusive club,’” says Barbara Greenberg, a clinical psychologist. The fear of thigh gaps is the response teenagers are giving towards them. Some starve or get into behaviors that lead to eating disorders. Others become very critical over body image. Obsessing about thigh gaps can increase the desires to lose weight and increase...

His reasons for this seem, on the surface, quite selfish. He desires to be the father of an Olympic champion and he thinks if his son becomes a boxing world champion there will be enough money for all of the family to live on. For Romeo, the sport is boxing where Tony wants Romeo to achieve a high profile career leading to a world championship. Yes. Mainly for financial reward it seems.
