When you think of the BP Oil Spill of 2010, what comes to mind? Recently, an ad has been aired from BP Oil Company, showing a married couple who owned a restaurant and their account of the oil spill. In this television commercial, Bob and Brooke Kar, owners of the La Famille restaurant, discussed the affects and aftermath of the spill to their business. They were forcefully put out of business because their fishermen and shrimpers were unable to supply them with fresh seafood. This restaurant prides themselves on serving local seafood and the “best gumbo in town.” Unfortunately, that ceased the restaurant’s operations when the devastation occurred.
Prior to this ad, the BP oil Spill made major headlines, both locally and nationally. People all around were frustrated that something as simple as plugging up the leak took several months to accomplish. The people of the Gulf Coast who owned hotels, restaurants, fishermen, shrimpers, and other tourist attractions had to shut down their businesses and struggle to find other work to support themselves, being that their livelihood was taken away from them.
Many people at the time were frustrated and disturbed because they were not getting the results promised to them. It had become so out of control that people began pointing fingers not only to BP, but to even the President of the United States, who was being blamed for not doing enough. The oil tycoon became so desperate and under a lot pressure, the media stepped in and even regular people, offered their ideas and suggestions as to how they can stop the leak. News stations, talk show hosts and several websites had people demonstrate various techniques and methods on how to stop the leak. After many weeks of trial and error, the leak was stopped and people were relieved, or somewhat. The leak stopped, but what happens to the people, animals and the ecosystems destroyed by the incident? At the time, BP continued to run ads reassuring the public that they will make things better and everything will be all right.
Fast forward to a year later, and BP Oil Company has another advertisement. This time it is not them announcing how they will make it better, but that they have made it better. After the clean up and testing of the wildlife and water, to be sure that there were not any oil remaining, people gradually returned to their ordinary lives. Now, the owners of “Restaurant des Familles” are back in business. In the beginning of the ad, both Mr. and Mrs. Kar spoke about the incident, which shut them down, for the first few seconds of the commercial. They did not say anything directly as to why things have been rough for them for the past year. Mr. Kar complimented how BP “stepped up” and did a good job of handling the situation, and that the incident in the Gulf has brought their community closer. This form of rhetoric allowed the company to show that even though a major mistake had occurred, they were still able to bounce back and make it work. This appeal showed a need to feel safe, according to the Kars, BP stayed around and made things better, and no the Gulf Coast is back to how it once was. Throughout the ad, both husband and wife appear to be very hands-on in the restaurant. Interacting with both employees and guests, while setting up tables and welcoming the guests into the restaurant.

2010 Bp Oil Spill

...On April 20, 2010 at approximately 9:45 PM, the entire future of the Gulf of Mexico, and the Ocean entirely, was changed when high-pressure gas from BP’s Gulf well expanded into the drilling rig, where it ignited and exploded, engulfing the platform entirely. At the time, 126 crew members were on board when the explosion occurred: seven BP employees, 79 of Transocean, and employees of various other companies. Eleven workers were never found despite a three-day search, and are believed to have died in the accident. 94 crew members were rescued, 17 of whom were treated for injuries. The largest oil leak in history was then discovered on April 22, when a large oil slick began to spread at the former rig site. The oil flowed for 87 days, dumping more than 200 million gallons of oil into the ocean- until the leak was capped on July 15. Because of this awful man-made mistake, thousands of animals died immediately, including some of the very humans that helped cause this catastrophe. (Source 1) The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found 1,014 birds with oil on them, causing birds to lose their buoyancy and the ability to regulate body temperature, 997 were dead, and 749 were alive. The NOAA also found 528 sea turtles, with 400 dead, and 128 alive. Also, Mammals could have ingested oil, which causes ulcers and internal bleeding- 51 mammals were found, with 47 dead and 4 alive. Also, dead and dying deep sea corals were discovered seven miles from the Deepwater Horizon...

Deepwater Horizon Explosion

...Running head: OIL DISASTER Deepwater Horizon Explosion Deepwater Horizon Explosion There was a major offshore oil spill that occurred on April 20, 2010 due to the Deepwater Horizon explosion. This has ultimately lead to the largest offshore oil spill in United States History. There have been many efforts made to try and stop the leak and on July 15, 2010 the oil leak was capped. There are now millions of gallons of oil that has leaked into the ocean and is now affecting the Gulf Coast. The biggest problem we are facing right now is finding a way to clean up the ocean and the shores along the Gulf and how it has affected the Gulf Coast. On the night of April 20, 2010 during the final phases of drilling an exploratory well a geyser of seawater erupted from a marine riser onto the rig. This was soon followed by the eruption of a slushy material. The gas component of the slushy material quickly transitioned into a fully gaseous state and ignited into a series of explosions and then into a firestorm. An attempt was made to activate the blowout preventer, but it failed. At the time of the explosion there were 126 crew on board, sadly eleven workers were presumed killed in the initial explosion. The rig was evacuated and support ships sprayed the rig with water to cool it and help prevent it from capsizing. However, after approximately 36 hours of burning, Deepwater Horizon sank on April 22, 2010 ("Deepwater Horizon," 2010). Huge blowouts where oil is being drilled is fairly...

The Gulf connects to the Atlantic Ocean through a current from the Yucatan Straight, circulating around the Gulf and exiting through the Florida Straight, forming the Gulf Stream (The Environmental Protection Agency, 2012). With over 600,000 square miles of area and 16,000 miles of shoreline, the Gulf of Mexico supports a host of economic activities. Tourism, shipping, agriculture, fishing, fisheries, oyster production, shrimp production, oil and gas production, and more from the Gulf produce annual economic activities in excess of $234 billion (Hargreaves, 2010). Oil and gas industry creates $124 billion annually, the largest chunk of Gulf economic activities (Hargreaves, 2010). This industry, while creating the largest economic impact in the area, is also responsible for creating its largest ecological disaster. On April 20, 2010, The BP and Transocean operated oilrig Deepwater Horizon had recently suspended drilling operations more that 50 miles southeast of Venice, Louisiana’s coast (Rigzone). BP had filed a permit to temporarily abandon the well and move the rig to a new location. At 10 p.m. an explosion ripped through the rig killing 11 workers (Rigzone). A bubble of methane gas escaped the well and traveled up the well bore, expanding as it climbed. The combustible bubble of gas burst through the barriers designed to contain it, bypassing the blowout preventer, and making it to the rig where the friction from the bubble could create a static charge...

This disaster is also known as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The spill began on April 20th, 2010 on the BP-owned Transocean operated Macondo Prospect. The catastrophe stemmed from a gas release and ensuing explosion on the oil rig. According to BP’s website, “We acted to take responsibility for the clean-up, working under the direction of the federal government to respond swiftly to compensate people affected by the impact of the accident, to look after the health, safety and welfare of the large number of residents and people who helped respond to the spill, and to support the economic recovery of the Gulf Coast’s tourism and seafood industries impacted by the spill. We have conducted studies with federal and state natural resource trustees to identify and define the injury to natural resources in the Gulf of Mexico”. BP allowed their use of social media to expose their corporation’s lack of professionalism and customer service. By addressing important topics from this disaster through social media channels they compromised their integrity immediately. It also was perceived as hiding behind a forum that was less than ideal to use for this particular situation. Society and certain industries can instantly...

Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill

...Crisis Panel BP Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill British Petroleum is a multinational company headquartered in London, United Kingdom. BP dedicates to find, extract, transport, and commercialize oil and gas. BP is the fourth largest global energy company in the world and it is the largest producer of oil and gas in the United States with headquarters in Houston Texas. Bp Oil Spill

...country comes from non-renewable resources such as fossil fuels. Sometimes people really do forget how dependent our country is on oil, but are reminded when the high demand causes the price of oil to jump. The burning of fossil fuels pollutes the air we breathe. Sometimes pollution occurs in the form of oil spilled into the ocean. Our country needs to force citizens and companies to pollute less by putting more money into research for alternative forms of energy and passing laws to prevent pollution. Even though offshore drilling can cause pollution by oil spills, it would be ridiculous to pass a law banning offshore drilling. As a country, we cannot fulfill our demand for oil without offshore drilling. The recent BP oil spill following the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oilrig on April 20th, 2010 raised concern in the minds of all U.S. citizens, not just the environmentalists. Most citizens would agree restrictions should be temporarily placed on offshore drilling until we are certain another spill of that magnitude will not happen again. After the disaster, many citizens were angered to think BP was going to get off scotch free. The media and politicians bashed BP for everything they did wrong. So far BP has taken their punishment, but recently the CEO of the company, Bob Dudley, stood up against the media and politicians. In the article entitled “BP CEO Bob Dudley hits back at media and politicians”, the author, Jane Wardell, discusses BP’s stance on the media attention it...

Bp Oil Spill

...BP Oil Spill Introduction The United States consumes 19.5 million barrels of oil each day. (Rahman,K. Sabeel, 2011) This demonstrates how dependent the American society is on fossil fuel. This need for large amount of oil to keep the economy moving is having serious environmental impact, particularly in areas where large off shore drilling platforms are located. Each year, approximately one billion gallons of oil is spilled in the ocean. The BP oil spill accident is just of the many oil spills that have occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. There are several events that led to this accident. Firstly was the last of control over the pressure in the well. This followed by the failure of the well blowout preventer. This is a valve which was designed to maintain consistent conditions of the well. Then the slurry cement which was used at the bottom of the well failed to contain hydrocarbon within the reservoir, which allows gas and liquids to flow up the production casing. At the same time BP and Tranocean accepted a negative pressure test which was incorrect and so integrity of the well was not established. Where there was supposed to be a separation of the mud and gas, this was not working, causing gas to vent directly on to the rig instead of being diverted overboard. The gas then flowed in to the engine room through the ventilation system which then created a potential for ignition, which was suppose to have been prevented by the rig’s fire and gas system. Bp Oil Spill

...BP Oil Spill Introduction: On the evening of April 22nd, 2010, a gas released and subsequent explosion occurred on the deck of Transocean Deepwater oil rig that was on the Gulf of Mexico. Eleven were killed and many were injured during the thirty-six hours it burned while hydrocarbons leaked into the Gulf of Mexico before it was closed off and sealed. The oil slick was produced by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that covered almost 29,000 square miles. The disaster was quickly declared the largest oil spill in United States history. Not only was the ocean surface glazed with oil sheen, the impact on the marine ecosystem below the surface and onshore was devastating. Many concerns were raised about the environmental impact of chemicals known as dispersants that were used to dissipate the oil slick. Governmental agencies and others worked together to control the spill and minimize the impact that it would have on the environment and human health by containing it and cleaning up whatever came ashore. “Oil spills can affect water in a variety of ways it spreads out into a very thin layer across the surface which is called slick and it expands till it’s extremely thin”.(Bourne, 2010, p.2) The Deepwater Horizon oil spill wasn’t an unavoidable accident it was the results from negligence and avarice. The oil spill sparked heated debates regarding a variety of issues; the country’s dependence on fossil fuels, government regulations and which organization was more at fault. Key...

...BP Deep-water Horizon Oil Spill Public Relations BP Deep-water Horizon Oil Spill: Executive Summary The Deepwater Horizon oil spill or the BP oil spill was a disaster in the Gulf of Mexico that took place in the Macondo Prospect. Macondo Prospect was a BP operated project, and one of the oil spill disasters that has been considered to be one of the most destructive accidents on marine environment. In fact, it has been considered the most expensive and life threatening accident in the petroleum industry. The disaster was an explosion in a deep-sea oil drilling facility owned by BP Company, in which the resultant explosion caused the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oilrig, killing 11 people in the incident. The disaster let free a gush of oil from under the seabed, flowing for an estimated three months. The result of the BP oil disaster was indeed catastrophic not just too marine life, but also to all other sectors of the economy that depended either directly or indirectly on marine environment (Alexander, 2010). In what remained to be a disaster, the wellhead had continued to gush oil for up to 87 days before a team finally succeeded in July 2010. By this time, it was estimated that the oil spill had discharged approximately 4.9 million barrels, a quantity estimated to be 780,000 cubic meters. By this time, marine life had been put in jeopardy while a lot others had died, or been seriously affected. Apart from marine and wildlife habitats...

Current Ethical Issues on Oil Spill

...Current ethical issues on Oil Spill Today, with the continual and rapidly growing need of energy demand by big nations like United States and China continuing to furnish their domestic consumptions of oil have led to increased prices of gasoline whereby alternative forms of energy production are sought. With this in mind, offshore drilling can be a viable option for satiating the need of oil and also to boost the economy of the nation. In this report, I am going to discuss how the current Deepwater Horizon rig explosion has led to disastrous oil spill into the Gulf of Mexico causing environmental problems and also discuss how the oil spill if resolved and with safe and secure drilling techniques, the economic impact of offshore drilling can outweigh the environmental issues. Concerning the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion on April 20, 2010, which escalated into a massive amount of oil spillage from the well reservoir as the oilrig sunk killing eleven crewmembers on board. The key players related to the rig explosion are British Petroleum (BP), Transocean, rig owner, and Halliburton. BP is one of the world's largest energy companies, providing its customers with fuel for transportation, energy for heat and light, retail services and petrochemicals products for everyday items. (“BP at a glance,” 2010) Transocean, the world’s largest offshore drilling contractor and the owner of Deepwater Horizon rig, provides the most versatile fleet of mobile offshore drilling units to help...
