...Introduction to English literature Love is a human emotion the majority of us have experienced, Will experience or yearn to experience throughout ones life. The relationships between people have massive effects on individuals and it brings with it so many other emotions such as happiness, pain, humour, guilt, hate, jealousy and so many more. This assignment will discuss how the poems “Ballad” which is a traditional poem with an unknown author “The Sick Equation” by Brian Patten and the Short story Brackley and the Bed” by Sam Selvon, depict love and relationships the effect the writer has on the audience and also how the texts reflect social issues. In the traditional style poem “Ballad” the writer uses short regular rhyming verses to tell the story of a young maid who falls in love with a shepherd. The writer portrays the maid as the Protagonist and the victim of a love crime from early on in the poem for example. “ He stole away my liberty, when my poor heart was strange to men. He came and smiled and stole it then.” (Lines 2 – 4) The writer describes the antagonist Shepherd as “faithless” and a “rogue” who seemingly promised the young innocent maid the world but in return took her virginity, impregnated her then left her in a depressed suicidal state. “He promised beds as fine as silk, and sheets for love as white as milk. But he when won my heart astray let me to want a bed of clay.” (Lines 21 -24) The writer’s use of contrasts in this poem is very effective...

...coursework is to complete a discussion of an organisation, policy, or product and evaluate the ways in which the object could be regarded as ‘good’, and ‘bad’. You may choose a specific case to evaluate; or build a hypothetical case using suitable real world examples. A competitor firm has outsourced its production abroad. You could do the same. You are the major employer in the town where you are located. You have to decide whether also to outsource your production. Introduction The industry that my firm operates within is the winter clothing industry. The company supplies clothing to multiple clothing retailers across the U.K and selected areas of Europe mostly around the French and Swiss Alps. The company’s factory is based in Brackley and employs 2500 local employees. Our company has a strong ethical and moral feel and image due to a strong involvement in charity fund raising and organising events for under privileged children to get involved in sports and activities they wouldn’t usually have the opportunity to do. We are seen locally as an incremental part of the local infrastructure and through feedback sheets its apparent that on the whole our employees are happy and our staff turnover and productivity reflects this. The main issue we have recently encountered is that in October 2011 the minimum wage went up 15p to £6.08 an hour therefore increasing the cost of labour and due to the rise in oil prices to £61 has increased the cost of production due to 80% of our...

...Samuel Selvon stays true to his people. He illustrates their ways of thinking and how difficult it was for them to accept colonization. He is a Caribbean writer because he lived what these people lived. The only element that is hard to believe is the power he gives to the women in his short story. This power reflects a movement of feminism, which is a new movement in the current society. Is it truly power or is it only a way to survive? How can women survive in this story if the men don’t have money? It is only an illusion of power because women still depend on men to survive. Finally, Samuel Selvon is an excellent example of a writer that feels dislocated. With his character, Brackley, the author managed to illustrate how people don’t feel at home even when they are. Brackley lost his bed when Teena moved in and since then, he isn’t himself and his life will never be the same. This truly reflects the way people feel after been colonized. They loose their homes, their language and some of their customs. The authors of the post-colonial period have the right to denounce these injustices. They have the right to express their anger and their feelings of lost of identity. These writers represent hope. They are challenging indirectly the political system and they are being heard across the world. They have the power. The literary works that they leave behind them are always going to be there to help people understand what the people have lived and why they have...

A group discussion is an assessment situation where you sit with your teacher and discuss a topic. During the discussion, the teacher will ask you different questions relevant to the stories / the film and its content. We will focus primarily on the analysis of the stories / the film, so you should know some things about the plot, the setting, the main characters, the point of view and the themes. In the group discussion, you will draw (=trekke) a story /film, and this is what we will start talking about. During the discussion we will probably include one or two of the other stories as well. In order to prepare properly for this discussion, you should read attentively. Since your analysis should be based on evidence from the story; make notes while you read, and find good examples in the story which illustrate the characters, the themes etc. The examples you find can serve as evidence for your interpretation. What is important in the discussion is to present your thoughts and reflections on the stories. You will be graded individually...

...Generally, people try to win the hearts of others to get the benefits and giving advantage to people as in Segon and Booth (2011, 16) which states that in western country gift giving is considered as bribery Asia is considered as a friendly action. In this case, a manager of the Australia Mining Corporation company needs to make an ethical decision whether to purchase a luxury gift. Since received information that gift giving able to secure the contract between the Asian Company. The ethical decision making models are utilitarian, moral rights and justice. This essay will be discussing on whether the manager should purchase a gift while negotiating a cross culture business. Moral right is not suitable because moral is one behavioral value base on certain criteria or conduct that is acceptable by the society (Boganovic, Cingula and Ivanisevic 2014, 80). In this case the humanity right is not being considered in the decision making process. If using transposition consideration, the Australia mining sector manager becomes the receiver and received an expensive and luxurious gift. Surely, none of the receiver will reject it. Moreover, the contract benefits company and stakeholder. Both company are able to do culture exchange. In additional, company should consider profit instead of humanity rights. Profit is more important to the company. If the manager considers humanity rights is more important the company will not be improve. Manager will be too scare to take risk and being...

...2012 RACE GUIDE Racing for GB F Race for the nation and visit Middle Earth? Sounds good to us. One age-grouper explains why he’s aiming to be in Auckland come October 2012 rom Athlone to Australia, China to Pontevedra, age-group triathlete Robbie MacNab has been a part of the hugely successful British team. But what does it feel like to pull on the GB kit? I always feel proud to put the GB kit on. I’ll never forget the feeling the first time I qualified; I grinned all the way on the three-hour drive home. Added to that was seeing my parents’ faces when they saw the kit for the first time at the Euro Champs in 2010. Even if I never manage to qualify again, those moments stay with you forever. The sheer size of the GB Team is impressive. You start to recognise people from races during the year, and it only takes a few minutes of waiting at the airport before someone with the telltale bike box says hello. In Beijing all the GB guys were racked together and everyone was wishing each other luck. You get great support from the crowds too; for the Euro Champs in Spain it could’ve been a home race with the number of GB supporters! Racing for GB means I’ve visited places I may not otherwise have gone to. I’ve seen the Great Wall of China and spent time in Australia. But I’ve never been to South America so if the Worlds were over there it would be a great excuse! I’d like to race the Worlds in Auckland, and I’ve moved up an age group so it’ll be interesting to see where I fit in...
