...judgment, an opinion or preconceived idea formed before knowing the certain facts. In other words it is the irrational behavior towards a group, race, religion or individual. This topic is also relevant to the topic of cultural differences as it highlights the unfairness of minority groups and convenience to become aware and later prevent. Consequently, this project follows the structure below: 1. Influential factors 2. Current situation 3. Comparison to other (similar) social structures 4. Conclusion Background historical information The Dalit, or the ‘untouchables’, are at the lowest position of the Indian social ladder. The Indian caste system was formed 3000 years ago and is divided into four main groups. The Brahims, the Kshatriyas, the Vaishyas, and finally the ‘outcasts’, the Dalits, excluded from the society. This hierarchical status responds to Hindu beliefs. Depending on the caste division there is a different social status that will affect all aspects of ones life personal and professional, for example general respect, employment, medical care, restrictions to where one can live, etc. The definition of the word ‘Dalit’, in Hindi language, means ‘broken’ or ‘crushed’. It is a term deliberately chosen by the same population as in recent years there is a...

BRAHIM BARHOUN IMRANI PRE-READING: http://www.inc.com/jack-ma/alibaba-jack-ma-reveals-his-global-strategy.html ALIBABA : THE EVERYTHING COMPANY In 1999, Trudy Dai used to spend all night sending e-mails from her friend Jack Ma’s apartment, trying to answer queries from American customers without letting on that she was Chinese. Ms Dai was one of the first dozen employees of Alibaba, an online listings service Mr. Ma, a teacher, had just started. It was already having some success connecting small Chinese manufacturers to potential customers, including the overseas ones Ms Dai was reassuring over e-mail. But the friends and students who made up the workforce were earning just 550 Yuan (then $66) a month. Mr. Ma, though, already had big dreams. That year he said: “Americans are strong at hardware and systems, but on information and software, all of our brains are just as good.” The company that started in Mr. Ma’s apartment now employs 24,000 workers at its headquarters in Hangzhou and elsewhere; Ms Dai is president of human resources. A few years ago Alibaba began to turn a profit; in the year to September 2012 it made $485m on revenues of $4.1 billion. ...Food Taboos S. King Food Taboos Taboos are found all over the world and can range in various ways. Food taboos are one of the many taboos that are experienced all over the world. They are caused by society norms, religion, morals, and by personal beliefs. Many food taboos are not universal, but the idea behind them can be considered a universal concept. Religion and Spirituality Many food taboos are created because of religious or spiritual purposes. Each culture defines these taboos through social communications and specific rules. Taboos can be used to put boundaries between people and the objects that are tabooed. Because of religion or spiritual practices, food taboos can express group identity and social differentiation between cultures or a single culture which further divides each culture (Lien, 2004). Lien suggests that “classifications of food and edibility are intimately connected to cultural distinctions between society and nature, or between humans and animals, and linked to questions about what it means to be a morally responsible human being” (2004). The ideology of each culture is different based on the definitions and morals of the culture. This is what causes the variations of food taboos from culture to culture. Firstly, food taboos can be based on the specific spirituality or religion of a culture. Specific animals and plants can be banned because of morals within the culture. Lien explains that this might be because food is “intimately linked to the...

...This is apparent in the different ways white subjects and Black subjects are portrayed, such as Black victim Michael Brown, who “struggled with police before the shooting,” versus white Aurora shooter James Eagan Holmes, remembered as a “brilliant science student.” ”(Nam par.2). Nam gives an example of two subjects that have been both portrayed in the media one being a black victim being negatively depicted even though he was the victim versus a white shooter who is in the wrong getting depicted so positively. Also, Brahim EL-Zurek in a french broadcast has spoken on how he feels towards racial stereotyping that has personally affected him “We are sick and tired of being described as immigrants, delinquents, thieves, Islamic radicals. They see us only as gang rapists, hash dealers or religious zealots.”(Analysis: Riots highlight lack of diversity in French media par.10).What EL-Zurek is discussing is what many minorities face because of the media that can be fixed...

...Battle of Algiers The Battle of Algiers is a film by Italian filmmaker, Gillo Pontecorvo. The film was nominated for three Oscars for Best Writing, Story and Screenplay - Written Directly for the Screen, and Best Director. It won the grand prize at Venice and was given top honors in London during its debut. The Battle of Algiers reveals the questionable effects of Western imperialism and how the legacy of imperialism is tied to the suppression of indigenous resistance. The film is set in the city of Algiers which was the capital of Algiers, during French colonist rule of the 1950s and 1960s. The film depicts how the French colonists were successful in winning the Battle of Algiers in 1957, however, in the end, their tactics cost them the colony of Algeria; three years later, the people overthrew French colonial rule and won their independence. The film is an insightful interpretation of the effect of Western colonialism; as such, it's an important source of reference in the discussion of current events involving the West's intervention in the Middle East. The movie begins with a torture scene in which French paratroopers have just gained information about the freedom fighters. The French know where the leader, Ali Pointe, is hiding and he has thirty seconds to surrender. Much of the film is a flashback from the point of view of Ali Pointe, the leader of the resistance. The way the film came about is surprising in many ways. The movie was subsidized by the Algerian...

...By Ivica Crnkovic, Brahim Hnich, Torsten Jonsson, and Zeynep Kiziltan Specification, Implementation, and Deployment of COMPONENTS Clarifying common terminology and exploring component-based relationships. omponent-based software engineering is a new, promising, and rapidly growing discipline in academia and industry. The basic concepts in CBSE originate from different areas of software engineering and computer science, such as OO programming, reuse, software architecture, modeling languages, and formal specifications. Industry and the open market have had a significant impact on the development of component technology—CBSE synthesizes knowledge and experience from these areas. A consequence of this situation is that CBSE uses concepts that are still not fully formalized, terms that are not clearly distinguished, with relations among them that are not well explained. For example, the terms “component” and “interface” are still widely discussed, and still not yet formally specified. Here, we clarify the commonly used terms within the area of CBSE and discuss relations between them. The main concerns of CBSE related to components are a component specification, its implementation, and its deployment. A component is specified by functions by which it communicates with its environment, and by other attributes, called “extrafunctional attributes,” which are not expressed by functions but define the total behavior of the component. A widely used method for specifying the syntactic...

...Abstract Businesses, both large multinational and small to medium, should take the threats and risks they could face seriously. Security Risk Management (SRM), Business Continuity Management (BCM) and Emergency Planning (EP) assist in achieving this by putting in place effective risk identification and management measures. Effective management of risk can make the difference between success or failure of business operations during and after difficult events. Threats can include man made threats, such as terrorist attacks, or naturally occurring threats such as earthquakes. Effective risk identification and management is essential to any business, especially with the current uncertainty in the world’s economic climate. In order for businesses to survive, during times of increased strain on business operations, it is essential that an alignment between security and business operations can be achieved. This can be achieved by the security department not only widening the remit to cover more risks, but changing how the department works and relates to the rest of the business; including shared responsibility for things such as Corporate Governance, Information Assurance, Business Continuity, Reputation Management and Crisis Management. The problem is security departments now have more responsibilities in an increasingly complex and fast moving world. Security Risk management is no longer an activity just for companies who work in high-risk areas or with exposure to significant...
